Islam in Canada > York U. Student President deeply antisemitic; Two ISIS brides in Edmonton to undergo deradicalization

Canada: York University student president urged to resign over ‘deeply concerning’ support for Hamas

Somar Abuaziza considers Yahya Sinwar — the slain October 7 mastermind — to be a hero. She has dozens of social media posts expressing open support for the jihad terror of Hamas. Hamas, meanwhile, does not disguise its intent to murder Jews and obliterate Israel. The consequences for Somar Abuaziza should be much greater than merely being asked to resign, particularly in a country in which hate and incitement are criminal offenses. She has also “applauded the Yemen-based Houthi rebel group, a designated terror entity in Canada, firing missiles at Israel.”

Canada’s largest Jewish lobby, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), took issue with the York Federation of students last year:

Abuaziza’s defense when asked to resign as president of the York Federation of Students was to scream “racism,” claim that there was a campaign of intimidation against her, and assert that it was her right to fight for “the liberation of her people against Zionism.” That “liberation” really means the obliteration of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

Abuaziza’s excuse about fighting “Zionism and violent colonialism” is outrageous. The biggest colonizers of the entire Middle East are the Islamic warriors who conquered the region by means of violent jihad. Zionism in simple terms is support for the right of the Jewish people to have their own homeland and state: Israel. Jews are the indigenous people of Israel, and archeological evidence proves it.

The Jewish campus group Hillel Ontario stated of Abuaziza’s actions:

When 86% of surveyed Jewish students say they are concerned about antisemitism on their campus, this is one of the more horrific reasons why.

We demand better for our community. Please join me in standing alongside Jewish and Israeli students at York by calling on Abuaziza to resign immediately. Because of her repeated disdain for the Jews and Israelis, she clearly is not fit to serve the York student body.

York University student president urged to resign over ‘deeply concerning’ support for Hamas

by  Ari David Blaff, National Post, February 26, 2025:

“Lived a hero and died a hero,” York University student Somar Abuaziza wrote on Instagram following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last October.

“Lived a hero and died a hero,” and is burning in Hell for all Eternity!

Last Tuesday, Abuaziza became president of the York Federation of Students (YFS), representing nearly 50,000 undergraduates and boasting an almost $2 million annual budget, raising concerns from students and others who question the leadership of a student leader with views they see as toxic.

Abuaziza has made dozens of social media posts appearing to support Hamas, its leadership and the October 7 attacks, which led to the deaths of over 1,000 Israelis and the abduction of hundreds of civilians. Her Instagram account was turned private following National Post requests for comment by email, direct message and phone.

Her profile bio remains unchanged, though, featuring an inverted red triangle — which the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says is a symbol used by Hamas to denote enemies — beside her name.…

Edmonton ISIS women ordered to attend deradicalization program

An Alberta judge has ordered two Edmonton women captured in Syria during the defeat of the Islamic State to take part in a deradicalization program.

At a court appearance on Friday, Helena Carson and Dina Kalouti were told they must undergo counselling with the Organization for the Prevention of Violence.

Justice Suzanne Polkosnik approved an RCMP request to impose a terrorism peace bond on the sisters-in-law, who acknowledged living in ISIS territory for four years.

“We’re happy with the court’s decision today and we believe that it shows that my clients are absolutely no concern to the Canadian public, as they’ve maintained all along,” their lawyer Zachary Al-Khatib said outside the Edmonton courthouse.

I don't think that is what it actually shows. It shows they seem to be of no immediate threat, but must still be deradicalized because radicalized Muslims can be triggered to violence in a heartbeat.

He declined to answer questions about why they went to Syria.

Asked what was next for the women, he said they would “follow the court’s conditions and assure reasonable members of the public that they are productive members of society.”

Carson, 35, and Kalouti, 43, were among thousands of foreign nationals who flocked to the so-called Islamic State a decade ago despite the terror group’s record of atrocities.

When ISIS collapsed in 2019, they were captured by U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces fighters and held at a detention camp for women and children.

The Canadian government initially declined to help them but in July 2023, federal officials secured their release and flew them back to Alberta.

Although arrested by the RCMP upon their return, they were not charged with terrorism offences stemming from their alleged involvement with ISIS.

Instead, Crown prosecutors asked the Alberta court for terrorism peace bonds that impose restrictions on suspects who “may” commit a terrorism offence.

ISIS resurgence

The case comes amid what the Canadian Security Intelligence Service calls a “concerning increase” in extremist rhetoric and activities.

Terrorism arrests have spiked in Canada over the past two years, mainly due to a resurgence in the popularity of ISIS among youths.

Since last summer, the RCMP has stopped two ISIS-related attacks, as well as bomb plots in Calgary and Ottawa in 2023.

At the same time, women who were part of ISIS have been returning to Canada from Syria with the help of the federal government.

It is illegal to leave Canada to join a terrorist group, but most have not been charged but have rather been placed on peace bonds that restrict their activities.

Of the nine ISIS women who have returned, only three face charges so far: Montreal’s Oumaima Chouay, Ontario resident Ammara Amjad and Kimberly Polman of B.C.

Six other women were placed on peace bonds, while a seventh was not arrested upon her return. Canada also brought 22 children to the country from the ISIS camps.

A Muslim convert, Carson left Canada in March 2014, while Kalouti left that September, according to the Carson.

According to an RCMP report, Carson arrived in ISIS-held Syria in March 2015 with her husband Yazan Kalouti.

They were allegedly travelling with their Edmonton neighbours, Aimee Vasconez and Ali Zaid Abdel-Jabbar, another married couple.

Vasconez has also now returned to Alberta. A 12-month peace bond was imposed on her last May. Her husband was killed while fighting with ISIS in Syria.

Yazan Kalouti’s whereabouts remain unknown. Global News has been unable to confirm he is detained in Syria. He is the brother of Dina Kalouti.

Since their repatriation from Syria, the women have been living under bail conditions for public safety reasons.

Like I said!
