Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Australian independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines has had both legs amputated after she was struck by an SUV outside her office earlier this week, her husband said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, Phil Haines said Helen Haines' left leg was amputated on Monday and that they had hoped to save her right leg, but surgeons were forced to amputate it Wednesday.

"But the good news in all of this is Helen is alive and she's stable," he said during the press conference. "That is the most important thing for our family. And I think when we reflect and talk about and think about Helen, the two most important parts of Helen for us as a family are her heart and her mind."

He said "her heart is huge" and she has "the sharpest intellect."

"We are grateful and thankful that at this stage both her heart and her mind are in good shape," he said.

He said her road to recovery will be difficult, while calling her "a fighter."

"She is a determined person who will do her best with our support and love to recover, and that is what we hope for."

Helen Haines, 65, was struck Monday at about 3:35 p.m. local time by a Toyota LandCruiser near her Wangaratta, Victoria, office. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition before being airlifted to Melbourne, where she underwent emergency surgery.

A 43-year-old Tarrawingee man was restrained by a member of the public at the scene and then taken into police custody. Victoria Police announced in
a statement Tuesday night that the suspect was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Australian news organizations, including public broadcaster ABC News, identified him as Brendan Nugent.

Authorities allege the incident, which remains under investigation, was targeted.

Nugent appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court earlier Wednesday.
He did not request bail and will remain in custody until a Feb. 4 committal mention hearing, The Guardian reported.

According to Grok:

Nugent has been described in reporting as a local environmental/anti-logging activist; his family stated he had known Haines for over 20 years and called the events devastating and incomprehensible.

Teen gunman kills four at US elementary school

A teenage gunman killed three students and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, police said. The shooter was himself shot dead by a bystander.

The suspect was identified as a 16-year-old Bend resident, the city’s police chief, Mike Krantz, said at a news conference. He did not reveal the suspect’s name or say whether he knew anyone at the school.

The three children killed were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition.

Krantz said the gunman was shot by a “community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him.”

The school has been placed on lockdown, and the Bend Police Department has urged the public to avoid the area.

According to The Source Weekly, parents received alerts that nearby schools, including Caldera High School and Jewell Elementary School, had also been placed on lockdown following a police alert at around 1:20 p.m. Thursday. The lockdowns were lifted about 40 minutes later.

Video from the scene shows multiple police cars and ambulances near the school.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau’s local office was working with investigators. “We will make every resource they need available,” he wrote on X.

“Today is an awful day for our community,” Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said. “A school should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure,” she added, expressing condolences to the victims’ families.

The shooting comes amid continuing concerns over gun violence at US schools. In August 2025, a gunman opened fire on children attending Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, killing two students, aged eight and ten, and injuring 17 other people before taking his own life.

Teen wounds headmaster and teacher after opening fire at French school

France

Two teaching staff were shot and wounded by a 14-year-old boy armed with a hunting rifle at a school in Aubagne near Marseille Monday morning, French Education Minister ‌Édouard Geffray said. Authorities said the teenager's father had been taken into custody and that there did not seem to be any link to the student protests that have swept across the country in recent weeks.

A 14-year-old boy opened fire with a hunting rifle at a middle school in France on Monday, injuring the headmaster and a teacher before being disarmed by a member of staff, local authorities said.

The shooting took place at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in the southern town of Aubagne, near Marseille, where a third person was grazed by gunfire, police said.

Authorities said there did not appear to be a link with high school protests that have rocked France in recent weeks.

"The middle school was not affected by the high school students' protest," police told AFP.

The suspect "came in carrying a bag which was a guitar case. He clearly removed a weapon from this guitar case – a long gun, a hunting rifle," said Marseille's deputy public prosecutor Audrey Jouaneton.

He fired at least four shots, including inside a classroom occupied by teachers and pupils, leaving a mark on a blackboard, she added.

The headmaster, 53, and teacher, 37, were not in critical condition, according to authorities.

"The suspect, for reasons as yet unknown, fired at the headteacher, who was hit by a shower of pellets in the thighs and lower back," said Jacques Witkowski, prefect of the wider Bouches-du-RhĂ´ne region.

He then fired at a second teacher, who was hit by buckshot in the thigh before a member of staff disarmed him, he said.

Obviously, it was a shotgun, not a hunting rifle, that he used.

The suspect "is not known for any history of delinquency or radicalisation," Witkowski added.

Sarah, a pupil at the school, told AFP she heard the fire alarm go off during her Spanish lesson and went into the corridor, where she and her classmates "bumped into" the gunman.

"He started shooting and said: 'I've only come for the teachers, not for the pupils,'" she said.

An investigation into attempted murder has been opened.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, who visited the scene, said the suspect's father had been taken into custody.

Investigators were "trying to understand how this young person ended up in a position with this gun", Nunez told reporters.

'Prevent the worst'

French President Emmanuel Macron on X praised the teaching staff for their quick reaction.

"I commend the composure and exemplary response of the teaching staff, which helped to prevent the worst from happening," he said.

Nunez and Education Minister Édouard Geffray, arrived at the scene Monday afternoon.

Geffray called for action against such violence.

"This unacceptable act is yet further evidence of the rise of unchecked violence in our society, against which we must all take a stand," Geffray said on X.

There has been a spate of violent incidents at French schools in recent months, prompting bag checks on entry in some establishments.

Terrorism Around the World > Links to Iran growing in RAF Fairford terrorism plot - 2 Iran-linked suspects arrested; 2 young Brits hacked to death by psychopath

Oct. 1 (UPI) -- British Counter Terrorism Policing announced Thursday that a sixth man was arrested in London on suspicion of planning an apparent terror attack at the Royal Air Force base in Fairford.

The 25-year-old man is a dual British-Iranian citizen, authorities said in an update.

Police have also carried out searches of two properties in the Gloucestershire, England, area where the RAF base is located.

"The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry," said Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing.

"As we've made clear, we're looking at all possible angles -- including possible foreign state involvement."

Police initially reported that the man was 27, but later corrected his age.

The other five men arrested in connection with the incident earlier this week have been released on bail.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the incident was a foiled plot whose perpetrators are believed to have ties to Iran.

"There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford," he told the BBC.

Police found no explosive devices in three vans that were stopped near the base, which is used by the U.S. military to launch airstrikes on Iran, but gasoline was found.

7th terror suspect arrested in UK after incident at U.S. military base

British police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old man in London on suspicion of a terror offence over a security incident at a U.S.-run military air base in England that authorities have linked to Iran.

The arrest is the seventh in connection with a suspected plot against RAF Fairford, located 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London, which has been used by American bombers to strike Iran during this year’s war.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the man, a British national, was detained in the Westminster area of central London on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts.

Six other men have been released on bail under investigation.

Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing said detectives “continue to pursue multiple lines of enquiry” and “remain committed to investigating all possible angles.”

Scores of residents were evacuated from their homes near the base early on Sept. 27 as armed police officers and army bomb-disposal experts swooped on the rural area. Police later said they had found a quantity of an accelerant — gasoline — in three vans linked to the five suspects, but no explosives.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the U.K. sees “strong indications” that Iran played a part in the incident, without saying why or what the nature of the suspected plot was.

Iran has denied involvement, but it has previously said it considers any base used to attack its territory a legitimate target.

The U.S. moved its B-52 and B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford on Sunday, though it’s unclear whether the move is connected to the arrests. U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that he didn’t want to tempt “the enemy” by having the bombers there.

“We had a threat, and if we’re going to be threatened, we would just move them, and that sort of alleviates that,” he said in Washington. He said that the people who made the threat “would be linked to Iran,” but he didn’t offer details.

Two young Brits hacked to death in Nottingham, police screw it up completely

More two-tier injustice from the filthy police. Evil psychopath Valdo Calocaine who butchered two British kids wasn't tested for drugs or alcohol during his arrest. Desperate to find an excuse for him, his two victims were tested. During their autopsy. Sick. The police are not here to help. The police are behaving like Nazis
