Islam in Canada > York U. Student President deeply antisemitic; Two ISIS brides in Edmonton to undergo deradicalization

Canada: York University student president urged to resign over ‘deeply concerning’ support for Hamas

Somar Abuaziza considers Yahya Sinwar — the slain October 7 mastermind — to be a hero. She has dozens of social media posts expressing open support for the jihad terror of Hamas. Hamas, meanwhile, does not disguise its intent to murder Jews and obliterate Israel. The consequences for Somar Abuaziza should be much greater than merely being asked to resign, particularly in a country in which hate and incitement are criminal offenses. She has also “applauded the Yemen-based Houthi rebel group, a designated terror entity in Canada, firing missiles at Israel.”

Canada’s largest Jewish lobby, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), took issue with the York Federation of students last year:

Abuaziza’s defense when asked to resign as president of the York Federation of Students was to scream “racism,” claim that there was a campaign of intimidation against her, and assert that it was her right to fight for “the liberation of her people against Zionism.” That “liberation” really means the obliteration of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

Abuaziza’s excuse about fighting “Zionism and violent colonialism” is outrageous. The biggest colonizers of the entire Middle East are the Islamic warriors who conquered the region by means of violent jihad. Zionism in simple terms is support for the right of the Jewish people to have their own homeland and state: Israel. Jews are the indigenous people of Israel, and archeological evidence proves it.

The Jewish campus group Hillel Ontario stated of Abuaziza’s actions:

When 86% of surveyed Jewish students say they are concerned about antisemitism on their campus, this is one of the more horrific reasons why.

We demand better for our community. Please join me in standing alongside Jewish and Israeli students at York by calling on Abuaziza to resign immediately. Because of her repeated disdain for the Jews and Israelis, she clearly is not fit to serve the York student body.

York University student president urged to resign over ‘deeply concerning’ support for Hamas

by  Ari David Blaff, National Post, February 26, 2025:

“Lived a hero and died a hero,” York University student Somar Abuaziza wrote on Instagram following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last October.

“Lived a hero and died a hero,” and is burning in Hell for all Eternity!

Last Tuesday, Abuaziza became president of the York Federation of Students (YFS), representing nearly 50,000 undergraduates and boasting an almost $2 million annual budget, raising concerns from students and others who question the leadership of a student leader with views they see as toxic.

Abuaziza has made dozens of social media posts appearing to support Hamas, its leadership and the October 7 attacks, which led to the deaths of over 1,000 Israelis and the abduction of hundreds of civilians. Her Instagram account was turned private following National Post requests for comment by email, direct message and phone.

Her profile bio remains unchanged, though, featuring an inverted red triangle — which the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says is a symbol used by Hamas to denote enemies — beside her name.…

Edmonton ISIS women ordered to attend deradicalization program

An Alberta judge has ordered two Edmonton women captured in Syria during the defeat of the Islamic State to take part in a deradicalization program.

At a court appearance on Friday, Helena Carson and Dina Kalouti were told they must undergo counselling with the Organization for the Prevention of Violence.

Justice Suzanne Polkosnik approved an RCMP request to impose a terrorism peace bond on the sisters-in-law, who acknowledged living in ISIS territory for four years.

“We’re happy with the court’s decision today and we believe that it shows that my clients are absolutely no concern to the Canadian public, as they’ve maintained all along,” their lawyer Zachary Al-Khatib said outside the Edmonton courthouse.

I don't think that is what it actually shows. It shows they seem to be of no immediate threat, but must still be deradicalized because radicalized Muslims can be triggered to violence in a heartbeat.

He declined to answer questions about why they went to Syria.

Asked what was next for the women, he said they would “follow the court’s conditions and assure reasonable members of the public that they are productive members of society.”

Carson, 35, and Kalouti, 43, were among thousands of foreign nationals who flocked to the so-called Islamic State a decade ago despite the terror group’s record of atrocities.

When ISIS collapsed in 2019, they were captured by U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces fighters and held at a detention camp for women and children.

The Canadian government initially declined to help them but in July 2023, federal officials secured their release and flew them back to Alberta.

Although arrested by the RCMP upon their return, they were not charged with terrorism offences stemming from their alleged involvement with ISIS.

Instead, Crown prosecutors asked the Alberta court for terrorism peace bonds that impose restrictions on suspects who “may” commit a terrorism offence.

ISIS resurgence

ISIS resurgence fuelled by youth recruitment

The case comes amid what the Canadian Security Intelligence Service calls a “concerning increase” in extremist rhetoric and activities.

Terrorism arrests have spiked in Canada over the past two years, mainly due to a resurgence in the popularity of ISIS among youths.

Since last summer, the RCMP has stopped two ISIS-related attacks, as well as bomb plots in Calgary and Ottawa in 2023.

At the same time, women who were part of ISIS have been returning to Canada from Syria with the help of the federal government.

It is illegal to leave Canada to join a terrorist group, but most have not been charged but have rather been placed on peace bonds that restrict their activities.

Of the nine ISIS women who have returned, only three face charges so far: Montreal’s Oumaima Chouay, Ontario resident Ammara Amjad and Kimberly Polman of B.C.

Six other women were placed on peace bonds, while a seventh was not arrested upon her return. Canada also brought 22 children to the country from the ISIS camps.

A Muslim convert, Carson left Canada in March 2014, while Kalouti left that September, according to the Carson.

According to an RCMP report, Carson arrived in ISIS-held Syria in March 2015 with her husband Yazan Kalouti.

They were allegedly travelling with their Edmonton neighbours, Aimee Vasconez and Ali Zaid Abdel-Jabbar, another married couple.

Vasconez has also now returned to Alberta. A 12-month peace bond was imposed on her last May. Her husband was killed while fighting with ISIS in Syria.

Yazan Kalouti’s whereabouts remain unknown. Global News has been unable to confirm he is detained in Syria. He is the brother of Dina Kalouti.

Since their repatriation from Syria, the women have been living under bail conditions for public safety reasons.

Austrian govt vows to find allies to combat illegal migration

after slating EU Commission’s approach

Austria’s interior minister has blasted the European Commission’s stance on migration and declared that Vienna will form alliances with other EU states that want to combat the illegal movement of people in their own way.

Speaking on Tuesday, Karl Nehammer pledged that Austria would take the matter into its own hands and work with other countries to combat illegal immigration, saying, “the European Commission isn’t reacting, hence we are reacting ourselves.”

The Austrian minister accused the Commission of sending “the wrong signals” to asylum seekers traveling to Europe for refuge, alleging that the bloc gives “smugglers thousands of euros.”

Nehammer’s condemnation of the EU’s executive body comes after Austria ramped up surveillance at the eastern state of Burgenland’s border with Hungary, with the Austrian Federal Army and police launching operations in the area on Monday. The Austrian Ministry of Defense also announced on Saturday that it will deploy up to 400 additional soldiers to its border with Slovenia and Hungary.

Austria opened discussions on border security with neighbors Hungary and the Czech Republic last month. The three states share a mutual stance on the repatriation of migrants and are in favor of stricter border control, which Nehammer said should be “on the top of the EU agenda.” Czech Interior Minister Jan Hamacek shared Austria’s concerns, stating: “We are countries that look at migration with the same eyes.”

Migration is a sensitive subject in Austria, which was heightened following the murder of a 13-year-old girl (3rd story on link) in late June. The Austrian authorities arrested three Afghan asylum seekers on suspicion of the murder, and the case fueled a national debate over the issue of deportating asylum seekers who commit crimes. The Austrian People’s Party argued that those “who seek refuge in our country, but trample on our values and express this in their actions have no place in our country.”

The capital, Vienna, was also rocked by a series of shootings on November 2, 2020, with a gunman murdering four people and injuring over 20 before being shot dead by the police. The authorities dubbed the Austrian-born perpetrator as an “Islamist terrorist.”

‘HANG HIM,’ GB News presenter demands as Manchester Arena

bomb plotter reportedly refuses deradicalisation programmes

A GB News presenter’s controversial call to hang the imprisoned Manchester Arena bomb plotter has sparked debate on social media, with many telling the TV host to reconsider his “medieval opinion.”

On Wednesday, ITV News reported that Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi was refusing to cooperate with deradicalisation programmes at HMP Frankland, where he has been imprisoned for his part in the atrocity which killed 23 and injured over a thousand at an Ariana Grande concert.

The news about Abedi clearly touched a nerve with some, including GB News political correspondent and presenter Tom Hardwood, who was hammering away at his keyboard just moments after the story hit Twitter.

Citing part of the report which stated the bomb plotter was not cooperating with deradicalisation programmes, the GB News presenter wrote “hang him,” in a tweet which has garnered much attention.

Many people were quick to condemn the young presenter for his “bizarre and medieval opinion” with others claiming that “we’re better than that” in the UK.

“I think we've moved on from the death penalty,” another person wrote while writer and journalist Benjamin Cook asked Harwood, “Is that your answer to everything?”

Cook’s question prompted a response from Harwood, who said he was normally against the death penalty but noted: “In the case of people who we *know* committed mass murder - & are unrepentant about it - it's hard to argue against.”

The debate between Cook and Harwood continued, with the latter noting that British security forces regularly shoot terrorists when they’re posing a threat in the real world and suggesting such a fate for Abedi wouldn’t be morally different.

Others backed up the GB News anchor completely, suggesting that they would not normally support capital punishment, but in this case, it was okay.

Some even supposed Harwood wasn’t going far enough.

Even Tory peer Baroness Jacqueline Foster shared her two cents; stopping short of condoning Harwood’s call for hanging, Foster said “He should never be released!” adding that “We have become far too soft on ‘terrorism’ threats / actions in this country .. time to wake up !!”

The death penalty was suspended in the UK in 1965 and abolished in 1969.

In August 2020, Abedi was given 24 life sentences with a minimum of 55 years before he can be considered for parole. His brother Salman died committing the terrorist attack on May 22, 2017. Hashem was arrested in Libya the day after the bombing that devastated Manchester.

Deradicalisation should be a requirement before any violent Muslim terrorist can be released from jail.

Turkish coastguard detains over 200 Afghan migrants

heading for Europe amid rising violence in Afghanistan

Turkey’s coastguard service has said it detained a boat in the Aegean Sea heading for Europe which was carrying more than 200 Afghan migrants. The vessel was believed to be en route to Italy.

A boat carrying 231 migrants, most of whom are from Afghanistan, was detained by the coastguard, Reuters and Turkish media reported on Wednesday.

Two Turkish nationals, who were allegedly in charge of the vessel, were also detained. The migrants have been taken to a deportation center in the west of Turkey, according to state-affiliated news channel TRT World.

Footage from the broadcaster reportedly filmed in the small coastal town of Babakale showed the migrants being transported to port and sitting on the ground by the harbor.

An official from Turkey’s coastguard told Reuters that the group were believed to be heading to Italy. More than 200 of the 231 were from Afghanistan, the coastguard said, adding that others hailed from Syria, Iran, Eritrea and Pakistan. Turkish channel Halk TV claimed the migrants paid as much as $7,000 to traffickers for passage to Italy.

The number of people making a bid to reach Europe has reportedly risen significantly in recent weeks, amid increasing violence and conflict in Afghanistan. Turkish authorities detained around 1,500 migrants last week.

Last Friday, 37 people were rescued from a migrant boat which sank off the south coast of Turkey. Eight people were unaccounted for.

Israeli 14-year-old terror attack survivor tells European Union

to stop funding Palestinian terror

News, Spotlight, CUFI

“I am Ayala, almost 14 years old. I live in El Matan in Samaria. I like to read, write stories and draw. I want to describe the feeling of having a terrorist attack directed at you.”

These were the words of Ayala Shapira, who gave an emotional speech Tuesday at the European Parliament urging the EU to stop the Palestinian Authority from funding terrorism. Shapira was critically wounded in a terrorist attack in December 2014, when terrorists hurled a firebomb into a car she was riding with her father as they made their way home in Samaria.

The event at the European Parliament building was hosted by the Samaria Regional Council and a newly formed “pro-settler caucus” of 15 MEPs, called Friends of Judea and Samaria.

With her face fully bandaged as a result of the third-degree burns she suffered in the attack, Shapira told conference attendees,

“One of the terrorists that threw the Molotov cocktail at our car was a 16-year-old boy, only a few years older than me. He did it, among other reasons, to help his family financially. He knew that if he went to prison, the Palestinian Authority would take care of them. I want you to remember that sometimes when you think you are donating money to a peaceful, you are actually contributing to murder, pain and war,” she said.

Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan, who was also in attendance, remarked that “for a long time, they [Europe] have been talking about us, but they have not been talking with us. We came here to change this situation and to promote the human rights of the Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria.”

Speaking at the event, Petr Mach, an ardent supporter of Israel, said, “We decided to establish a new group in the European Parliament, since we want to inform the public and members of parliament of the use of European taxpayer money to support terror. We want to act together to put an end to the funding that supports terrorism.”

UK Strips 150 ‘Jihadists and Criminals’ of Citizenship in Major Clampdown on Extremism

© Simon Belcher / Global Look Press

The UK has stripped more than 150 suspected jihadists and criminals of their citizenship as part of counter terrorism efforts aimed at curbing extremism and preventing returning ISIS militants from embedding themselves in civil society.

“There’s an awful lot of people we have found who will never be coming home again. Our number one preference is to get them on trial. If we don’t think that’s possible, we use disruption techniques,” an unnamed senior security source told the Sunday Times.

The so-called "deprivation orders” bans any jihadists who fought alongside Islamic State from returning to the country.

More than 40 suspects have had their right to passports revoked so far in 2017, including the so-called "jihadi brides" who had travelled to Syria.

However, the punishment only applies to suspects with dual nationality, as the UK cannot leave people stateless.

The clampdown comes after intelligence chiefs warned the Home Office that more than 300 IS-affiliated militants could soon return to the UK amid the impending collapse of the so-called caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

“Prosecution and conviction is always our preference for dealing with terrorists,” security minister Ben Wallace told the Sunday Times.

“Tpims (terrorism prevention and investigation measures) are one of a range of powers at our disposal to disrupt terrorism-related activity where prosecution is not possible.”

Temporary exclusion orders, which impel suspected extremists to attend deradicalization programs, have been used in the past to deal with jihadists who cannot be stripped of their citizenship.

“We have planned and prepared for the risk posed by British returnees as Daesh [Isis] is defeated in Iraq and Syria and we are using a range of tools to disrupt and diminish that threat," Wallace added.

A major review of British anti-terrorism measures is scheduled for the autumn. Proposals include tighter controls for anyone suspected of terrorist sympathies, as well as a ban on accessing encrypted social media apps that have been used to plan terrorist attacks in the past.

UK security services are currently monitoring roughly 23,000 extremists, so the deprivation of citizenship is a means to limit any significant increases in that number.

In other words, it will not make Britain safer, just limit the degree to which it becomes even less safe.

“Citizenship of the UK is not an absolute right, nor should it be,” Richard Walton, the former head of counter terrorism at Scotland Yard, said.

“It is good to see these powers being used more frequently — for too long terrorists have been able to engage in terrorism abroad then return home without hindrance.”
