Bits and Bites from Around the World > Two bodies found in Jet Blue wheel well; Mayor of Italian town bans sickness; Parachutist lands in bonobos enclosure in zoo

Badly decomposed bodies found in plane’s wheel well

after Jet Blue flight from JFK

Two men were found dead inside a wheel well of a JetBlue plane in Florida after it spent the day

flying to and from New York City in brutal freezing temperatures, the airline said Tuesday.

The decomposed bodies were discovered inside the landing gear compartment during a routine post-flight inspection at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, a JetBlue spokesperson told The Post.

The plane landed there around 11 p.m. Monday from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport — but started the day in Jamaica, where the stowaways are thought to be from, according to the Jamaica Observer.

“A gate technician in the landing gear area noticed two males who appear to be Signal 7, advised they are not moving in the landing gear area,” an unidentified person said on police radio at 11:26 p.m., with Signal 7 police code for a dead personCNN reported.

JetBlue said it was still investigating “the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft.”

“This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred,” the airline added.

So far investigators only know that the two dead were men. “Beyond that, their identities at this time are unknown,” said Carey Codd, a spokesperson for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

“Detectives will investigate and research all aspects of this particular incident, trying to figure out where the flight originated from, where else it had been, the circumstances under which the individuals got onto the plane.”

The Airbus A320 had started the day in Kingston, Jamaica, where it took off just after 1 a.m. for an initial flight to JFK, landing just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, when it was still below 30 degrees.

It left JFK for Salt Lake City, Utah just before 7:30 a.m., before returning to the Big Apple just before 7 p.m., FlightAware tracking shows. It then left JFK again just before 7:30 p.m. before arriving in Fort Lauderdale, where the bodies were found.

Both were badly decomposed, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The Transportation Security Administration is investigating the deaths with help from the airline, FAA and local law enforcement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said  it is not part of that investigation because “it appears that the incident had no involvement of the flight crew or operation of the airplane.”

Italian mayor bans locals from getting sick

Political mismanagement and the mafia have reportedly decimated the healthcare system in Calabria
Italian mayor bans locals from getting sick

The mayor of a small town in Italy has issued a symbolic decree banning residents from getting sick, local media has reported. Antonio Torchia, the mayor of Belcastro, said the aim of the decree is to draw attention to the severe lack of healthcare services in the town.

Torchia announced the unusual order on local television, calling it an “an ironic provocation,” according to the newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano.

Torchia explained that the decree was not meant to be taken literally but was intended rather to underscore the dire situation faced by Belcastro’s 1,300 residents.

The initiative arises from the fact the emergency medical service in the town is intermittent and based on the availability of health personnel, noted the news agency ANSA.

The nearest emergency medical facility is located about 45 km away in Catanzaro, the capital of the Calabria region.

The situation has “deleterious effects” on residents, especially considering that elderly people comprise half of the town’s population, added ANSA.

For this reason, the mayor has “ordered” residents “to avoid contracting any disease that requires medical intervention, especially emergency, and to rest as much as possible.”

“It would be impossible to guarantee adequate healthcare,” Torchia said during the announcement.

The mayor claimed that he raised the issue with provincial health authorities last year but has not received a reply. “If there is no news soon,” he said he would go to the Public Prosecutor's Office to file a complaint.

The symbolic decree comes against the backdrop of a broader healthcare crisis in Calabria, where 18 hospitals have closed since 2009.

The region of Calabria, located at the tip of Italy's boot, is one of the least populated and poorest areas in the country. Media reports have claimed that its healthcare system has been undermined by political mismanagement and mafia involvement. The region was placed under special administration by the central government nearly 15 years ago.

Parachutist lands in bonobo enclosure at Ouwehands Zoo

A parachutist accidentally landed in the bonobo enclosure at Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen on Saturday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Bonobos are a type of chimpanzees.

The parachutist was supposed to land on the center circle of a nearby football field, where a new artificial turf was being inaugurated. However, due to unknown circumstances, the man veered off course and landed inside the bonobo habitat.

Zoo director Robin de Lange said the parachutist was fortunate that the bonobos were indoors at the time of the incident. "He’s extremely lucky—100 meters further, and he could have landed in the elephant or lion enclosure," De Lange told NOS.

The zoo plans to meet with the football club to prevent similar incidents in the future. "It was a real scare," said De Lange. "This must never happen again."

The cause of the mishap is under investigation. Both the parachutist and zoo staff confirmed that no animals or people were harmed during the landing.

Bits and Bites from Around the World > South Korea finally bans Dog Meat

South Korea passes bill to ban consumption

of dog meat

South Korea's parliament passed a bill on Tuesday to ban the eating and selling of dog meat, a move that will end the controversial centuries-old practice amid growing support for animal welfare. Support for the ban has grown under President Yoon Suk Yeol, an animal lover who owns six dogs and eight cats with first lady Kim Keon Hee, also a vocal critic of dog meat consumption.

Bits and Bites > The Netherlands to Ban Pugs and other Designer Pets

..

Dutch to ban unhealthy designer pets

Charlotte VAN OUWERKERK
Fri, January 20, 2023 at 7:55 AM PST

The Netherlands wants to ban pets such as flat-faced dogs and cats with folded ears, which look sweet but suffer "miserable" health problems, the government said on Friday.

Dutch Agriculture Minister Piet Adema
said he would seek to outlaw the ownership of the designer breeds and to ban photos of them in advertising or on social media.

"We make life miserable for innocent animals, purely because we think they are 'beautiful' and 'cute'," Adema said in a statement.

"That is why today we are taking a big step towards a Netherlands where no pet has to suffer from his or her appearance."

Despite sought-after looks that have made them a favourite with celebrities and a fixture among social media influencers, such pets suffer from a range of health conditions.

The Dutch minister said that owners often "have the best of intentions but are often unaware of the dark side of their pets' appearance".

"This subject touches me as a minister but also as a human," added Adema.

The government would now work out a full list of affected breeds, he said, adding that it could take some time.

But the public broadcaster NOS said squish-faced pugs could be among those banned.

The Netherlands banned the breeding of pets that are affected by their appearance in 2014, but some animals were still being traded illegally or bought from abroad.

The proposed new rules are designed to close a loophole so that it will also be illegal to own them.

In 2019, the Dutch government updated the rules to specifically apply to dogs whose snout is less than half the length of their skull.

- 'Out of breath' -

"Dogs with snouts that are too short are constantly out of breath, making them gasp throughout their life," Adema said in a letter to parliament setting out the proposal.

"Dogs that have a deviant skull shape may suffer from a permanent headache.

"Cats with folding ears have deviated cartilage which can cause them a lot of pain."

The fold-eared felines would definitely qualify for a ban, as was already the case in the Flanders region of neighbouring Belgium, the agriculture ministry said.

‘I’m Not an Anti-Semite. I’m Anti-Termite’: Nation of Islam Leader Won’t Be Suspended by Twitter

Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan has sparked controversy
with anti-semitic remarks in the past.

Funny! On the Real Saviour's Day, Farrakhan will not be smiling.

Twitter says it will not will not be banning Louis Farrakhan after the Nation of Islam leader once again courted controversy by comparing Jews to insects on the social media platform.

Twitter previously removed Farrakhan's 'verified' status in July for a similar, anti-semitic infraction when he tweeted: “Thoroughly and completely unmasking the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan.”

On Tuesday, Louis Farrakhan tweeted a video of fresh controversial remarks in which he likens Jews to insects, seemingly doubling-down and taunting his critics, past and present.

MINISTER FARRAKHAN
@LouisFarrakhan
 I'm not an anti-Semite. I’m anti-Termite.

Twitter is set to introduce new rules in an effort to curb ‘dehumanizing’ language on the platform. Statements “that treat others as less than human" including “comparing groups to animals and viruses,” will be explicitly forbidden. However the new rules are not yet in force, so Farrakhan will not be punished, for the time being at least.

No official date has yet been given by Twitter as to when the rules against such language will be brought into effect.

Twitter users were furious at both the comments themselves and the social media giant’s apparent indifference to Farrakhan’s rampant anti-Semitism.

Joe Bernstein✔
@Bernstein
Just in from a @Twitter spokesperson: Louis Farrakhan's tweet comparing Jews to termites is not in violation of the company's policies. The policy on dehumanizing language has not yet been implemented.

So if you want to compare Jews to rats/insects - get it in while you can!

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, tweeted her disgust at the remarks.

“Comparing Jews to termites is anti-Semitic, wrong and dangerous. The responsive laughter makes my skin crawl,” Clinton tweeted, while also apparently calling out activists on her side of the aisle. “For everyone who rightly condemned President Trump’s rhetoric when he spoke about immigrants ‘infesting our country,’ this rhetoric should be equally unacceptable to you.”

Outspoken conservative pundit Ben Shapiro, himself a member of the Jewish community, ridiculed Twitter’s flagrant double standards in relation to online hate speech.

Many called out Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to address the issue personally, though no answer was immediately forthcoming.

How is this not hate speech? @jack

Twitter has drawn the ire of conservative media in recent months for a series of purges targeting online commentators such as Alex Jones.

It is also embroiled in a new controversy at present for deleting up to 1,500 accounts that used the recent 'NPC meme' to satirize left-wing activists, alleging that they were... you guessed it, Russian bots.

Trump to Reinstate US Military Ban on Transgender People

Trump made his announcement in a series of tweets Wednesday morning
By Jeremy Diamond, CNN

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he plans to reinstate a ban on transgender individuals from serving "in any capacity" in the US armed forces.

The decision reversed a policy initially approved by the Defense Department under President Barack Obama, which was still under final review, that would allow transgender individuals to openly serve in the military. Defense Secretary James Mattis announced last month that he was delaying enactment of the plan to begin allowing transgender individuals to join the US military.

"After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military," Trump said in a series of tweets Wednesday morning. "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail." "Thank you," he added.

Ash Carter, the Defense secretary under Obama, ended the ban on transgender people serving openly in the military in 2016, but allowed for a year-long review process to allow the Pentagon to determine how it would accept new transgender recruits into the military.

On the eve of that one-year deadline, Mattis announced that he was delaying the implementation of the new policy, saying he needed more time.

"Since becoming the Secretary of Defense, I have emphasized that the Department of Defense must measure each policy decision against one critical standard: will the decision affect the readiness and lethality of the force?" Mattis said in a memo late last month. "Put another way, how will the decision affect the ability of America's military to defend the nation? It is against this standard that I provide the following guidance on the way forward in accessing transgender individuals into the military Services."

A 2016 Rand Corp. study commissioned by the Defense Department concluded that letting transgender people serve openly would have a "minimal impact" on readiness and health care costs, largely because there are so few in the military's 1.3 million-member force.

The study put the number of transgender people in the military between 1,320 and 6,630. Gender-change surgery is rare in the general population, and the RAND study estimated the possibility of 30 to 140 new hormone treatments a year in the military, with 25 to 130 gender transition-related surgeries among active service members. The cost could range from $2.4 million and $8.4 million, an amount that would represent an "exceedingly small proportion" of total health care expenditures, the study found.

Trump's decision marks a setback for LGBT rights groups who have expressed concerns that the Trump administration could chip away at progress the community has seen in recent years on the backs of a series of landmark decisions in recent years that have included the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide and a repeal of the ban on gay people openly serving in the military.

Trump's decision is also another setback for the transgender community following his decision several months ago to reverse an Obama administration policy allowing transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.

The announcement was immediately criticized by LGBT leaders and civil rights groups.

The American Civil Liberties Union called the decision "outrageous and desperate" and said it was exploring ways to fight the policy shift.

"Let us be clear. This has been studied extensively, and the consensus is clear: There are no cost or military readiness drawbacks associated with allowing trans people to fight for their country. The President is trying to score cheap political points on the backs of military personnel who have put their lives on the line for their country," said Joshua Block, the senior staff attorney with the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project.

Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Michigan, the vice chair of the congressional LGBT caucus, called Trump's decision a "slap in the face to the thousands of transgender Americans already serving in the military" and said it "undermines our military's readiness."

"Anyone who is willing to put on the uniform of the United States and risk their life in service to our country should be celebrated as patriots, regardless of their gender identity. This short-sighted and discriminatory policy will make America less safe," said Kildee.

He seems to be unaware that transgenders have an attempted suicide rate well above 40%. How can this be anything but a threat to a combat group? Of course, this is a CNN report which is in full support of the LGBTQ community at the expense of the military, or anybody else.

The Obama administration faced heated criticism from conservatives last year when it announced the repeal of the ban, and several Republican members of Congress have urged the Trump administration to reverse the decision, saying that the decision does not serve the US' defense interests.

The President's decision flies in the face of his 2016 campaign rhetoric, when he said he would be a strong defender of the LGBT community -- and even claimed he would be a better president for LGBT Americans than his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Trump seized on the terrorist attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, as an opportunity to reach out to the LGBT community and promised he would be a better friend to the community than Clinton.

"I will tell you who the better friend is and some day I believe that will be proven out big league," Trump said.
