Locals baffled as enormous 650ft deep sinkhole mysteriously appears

…and it’s getting BIGGER all the time

LOCALS have been left baffled after an enormous sinkhole mysteriously appeared in northern Chile - that is still growing.

The 650ft deep and 82ft wide pit bizarrely emerged on Saturday in the commune of Tierra Amarilla in the Atacama Region.

The terrifying sinkhole is thought to be more than 650ft deep and is still swelling - leaving authorities "very worried".

Staggering aerial images released by Chilean media show the vastness of the strange phenomenon which has left experts stumped.

The extraordinary sinkhole has formed on an area of land about 413 miles north of the capital Santiago, operated by Canadian mining firm, Lundin Mining.

Specialists have been sent to the site to survey the area after the National Service of Geology and Mining, Sernageomin, were alerted.

The agency's director David Montenegro explained: "There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 metres (656ft), to the bottom.

"We haven’t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water."

Chileans living nearby have been left horrified by the expanding sinkhole after officials confirmed it is still growing.

Local mayor Cristobal Zuniga said: "Yesterday [Saturday, 30th July] we received a citizen complaint regarding a sinkhole that occurred here in our community near the Alcaparrosa mine.

"We are concerned, since it is a fear that we have always had as a community, the fact we are surrounded by mining deposits and subterranean works under our community.

"It is still active, it is still growing and it is something that has not previously been seen in our community."

It is still active, it is still growing and it is something that has not previously been seen in our community.

However, there is no official confirmation yet that the sinkhole was caused by activities related to mining.

No injuries have been reported and officials are continuing to monitor the hole as mining work in the area was suspended.

In a statement on Monday, Lundin Mining insisted the sinkhole did not affect any workers or community members.

They said it had "remained stable" since it was first detected on Saturday.

The statement added: "The closest home is more than 600 meters away while any populated area or public service are almost a kilometer away from the affected zone."

The company are also reportedly conducting a technical analysis to determine the cause of the colossal hole.

Lundin Mining owns 80 percent of the property, while the rest is held by Japan's Sumitomo Corporation.

The deepest sinkhole ever recorded was in the Chongqing district of China, that measured a whopping 2,171 feet deep and 6735 metres wide.

MEANWHILE IN MONTANA:

A handful of cows found their way into a newly built home

and lived in it for a month before being noticed.

Ah! That fresh mountain air!

The family was moving from Washington. The Aunt was supposed to be checking on the place, but she didn’t.

A rancher had filed a report about missing some cattle and even checked their barn, but not the house.

They think a bad storm sent them looking for cover. They also think the storm blew a door in or somehow one of the cows nudged one open.

Glad I'm not on the clean-up crew!

Alex Jones ordered to pay $45.2M more over Sandy Hook lies

By JIM VERTUNO

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones attempts to answer questions about his emails asked by Mark Bankston, lawyer for Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, during trial at the Travis County Courthouse in Austin, Wednesday Aug. 3, 2022. Jones testified Wednesday that he now understands it was irresponsible of him to declare the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre a hoax and that he now believes it was “100% real." (Briana Sanchez/Austin American-Statesman via AP, Pool)

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas jury on Friday ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages to the parents of a child who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, adding to the $4.1 million he must pay for the suffering he put them through by claiming for years that the nation’s deadliest school shooting was a hoax.

The total — $49.3 million — is less than the $150 million sought by Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, whose 6-year-old son Jesse Lewis was among the 20 children and six educators killed in the 2012 attack in Newtown, Connecticut. But the trial marks the first time Jones has been held financially liable for peddling lies about the massacre, claiming it was faked by the government to tighten gun laws.

That was just for one child! What if the remaining 25 victim's families sue Jones? He must be more than a little anxious right now, as he should be.

It is good to see the jurors hold broadcasters responsible for telling flat-out lies. Perhaps it will put the fear-of-God into other journalists who have little regard for the truth or the feelings of the families of victims of horrible crimes.

Afterward, Lewis said that Jones — who wasn’t in the courtroom to hear the verdict — has been held accountable. She said when she took the stand and looked Jones in the eye, she thought of her son, who was credited with saving lives by yelling “run” when the killer paused in his rampage.

“He stood up to the bully Adam Lanza and saved nine of his classmates’ lives,” Lewis said. “I hope that I did that incredible courage justice when I was able to confront Alex Jones, who is also a bully. I hope that inspires other people to do the same.”

It could be a while before the plaintiffs collect anything. Jones’ lead attorney, Andino Reynal, told the judge he will appeal and ask the courts to drastically reduce the size of the verdict.

After the hearing, Reynal said he thinks the punitive amount will be reduced to as little as $1.5 million.

’We think the verdict was too high. ... Alex Jones will be on the air today, he’ll be on the air tomorrow, he’ll be on the air next week. He’s going to keep doing his job holding the power structure accountable.”

Jones’ companies and personal wealth could also get carved up by other lawsuits and bankruptcy. Another defamation lawsuit against Jones by a Sandy Hook family is set to start pretrial hearings in the same Austin court on Sept. 14. He faces yet another defamation lawsuit in Connecticut.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Mark Bankston said he believes he can challenge any attempt to reduce the damages. But he said even if the award is drastically cut, it’s just as important to take the big verdict into the bankruptcy court for the family to claim against Jones’ estate and company.

Jones testified this week that any award over $2 million would “sink us.” His company Free Speech Systems, which is Infowars’ Austin-based parent company, filed for bankruptcy protection during the first week of the trial.

Punitive damages are meant to punish defendants for particularly egregious conduct, beyond monetary compensation awarded to the individuals they hurt. A high punitive award is also seen as a chance for jurors to send a wider societal message and a way to deter others from the same abhorrent conduct in the future.

Barry Covert, a Buffalo, New York, First Amendment lawyer with no connection to the Jones case, said the total damages awarded amount to “a stunning loss for Jones.”

“With $50 million in all, the jury has sent a huge, loud message that this behavior will not be tolerated,” Covert said. “Everyone with a show like this who knowingly tells lies — juries will not tolerate it.”

Big Pharma > Depression Not Caused by Low Serotonin Levels, as Big Pharma makes a Killing

..

Did we all believe a myth about depression?

By Rachel Schraer
Health and disinformation reporter
BBC

A study showing depression isn't caused by low levels of the "happy hormone" serotonin has become one of the most widely shared medical articles.

It has provoked a wave of misleading claims about antidepressant drugs, many of which increase the amount of serotonin in the brain.

This research doesn't show the drugs aren't effective.

It's disappointing, but not unexpected, that BBC would take a defensive position on this story as opposed to lambasting Big Pharma, which it well deserves.

But the response to it has also sparked some genuine questions about how people treat, and think about, mental illness.

Once again, Big Pharma rakes in billions of dollars based on lies. New study finds big pharma falsely claimed depression was caused by a chemical imbalance - so they got people hooked on antidepressants that did nothing but increase the risk of suicide. Shameless & criminal.

After Sarah had her first major psychiatric episode, in her early 20s, doctors told her the medication she was prescribed was like "insulin for a diabetic". It was essential, would correct something chemically wrong in her brain, and would need to be taken for life.

Her mother had type 1 diabetes, so she took this very seriously.

Sarah stayed on the drugs even though they seemed to make her feel worse, eventually hearing menacing voices telling her to kill herself and being given electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Yet the claim she needed the drug like a diabetic needs insulin wasn't based on any medical evidence.

"You feel betrayed by the people that you trusted," she says.

Her reaction to the drugs was extreme but the "chemical imbalance" message she was given was not unusual.

Sarah and her mother, who took insulin for type 1 diabetes

Many psychiatrists say they have long known low levels of serotonin are not the main cause of depression and this paper doesn't say anything new.

Yet the unusually large public response to it suggests this was news to many.

But some made a leap from saying antidepressants don't work by fixing a chemical imbalance, to saying they don't work at all.

And doctors fear, in the confusion, people might stop taking their medication abruptly and risk serious withdrawal effects.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says these drugs shouldn't be stopped abruptly except in medical emergencies and reducing the dose slowly can minimise withdrawal symptoms.

Sarah has speech and movement difficulties after receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

What did the research show?

This latest research looked at 17 studies and found people with depression didn't appear to have different levels of serotonin in their brains to those without.

The findings help to rule out one possible way the drugs might work - by correcting a deficiency.

"Many of us know that taking paracetamol can be helpful for headaches and I don't think anyone believes that headaches are caused by not enough paracetamol in the brain," Dr Michael Bloomfield points out.

So do antidepressants work?

Research suggests antidepressants work only a bit better than placebos (dummy drugs people are told could be the real thing). There are debates among researchers about how significant this difference is.

Within that average is a group of people who experience much better results on antidepressants - doctors just don't have a good way of knowing who those people are when prescribing.

Some people who take anti-depressants say the drugs have helped them during a mental health crisis, or allow them to manage depression symptoms day to day.

Prof Linda Gask, at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, says antidepressants are "something that help a lot of people feel better quickly", especially in a crisis.

But one of the authors of the serotonin paper, Prof Joanna Moncrieff, points out most research by drug companies is short-term, so little is known about how well people do after the first few months.

"You have to say we will continue to review them and we won't keep you on them any longer than you need to be on them," something which often doesn't happen, Prof Gask agrees.

While there are risks to leaving depression untreated, some people will experience serious side-effects from antidepressants - which the serotonin study's authors say need to be more clearly communicated.

These can include suicidal thoughts and attempts, sexual dysfunction, emotional numbing and insomnia, according to NICE.

Since last autumn, UK doctors have been told they should offer therapy, exercise, mindfulness or meditation to people with less severe cases of depression first, before trying medication.

Local health teams might offer group therapy, recommend exercise or community activities

How was the research talked about?

One typical misleading response claimed the study showed the prescribing of antidepressants was "built on a myth".

But the study didn't look at antidepressant use at all.

So, it's only their second greatest scam of all time?

Serotonin plays a role in mood, so tweaking it can make people feel happier at least in the short term, even if they didn't have abnormally low levels to start with. It may also help the brain make new connections.

Others have claimed this study shows depression was never an illness in people's brains but a reaction to their environments.

"Of course it's both," Dr Mark Horowitz, one of the paper's author, says.

"Your genetics affects your sensitivity to stress," for example.

Not just genetics, but traumatic experiences, especially as a child, greatly affect one's ability to handle stress. As someone who survived many such experiences in my first 4 years, I grew up being afraid of my shadow. I was in my 50s before I overcame most of that fear.

But people having an understandable response to difficult circumstances might be better helped with "relationship counselling, financial advice, or a change of jobs" than medication.

However, Zoe, who lives in south-east Australia and experiences both severe depression and psychosis, says rebranding depression as "distress" that would go away if we "just fix all the social problems" is also too simplistic and overlooks people with more severe mental illnesses.

Psychosis runs in her family, but episodes are often triggered by stressful events such as exam deadlines.

Zoe says she has found medication, including antidepressants, life-changing and has been able to make a "calculation" side-effects are "worth it" to avoid severe episodes.

Of course, she has more than just depression going on.

And that's one things all of the experts who spoke to BBC News agree on - patients need to have more information, better explained so they can make these difficult calculations for themselves.

Truthful information would be helpful but not expected from Big Pharma. They have allowed this myth that increasing serotonin levels would cure depression to exist and to be accepted by most doctors in the world for half a century or more. Moving the inventory is far more important than treating patients carefully to Big Pharma.

Have there been any studies to determine whether antidepressants result in the brain producing lower levels of serotonin? That might explain the increased likelihood of attempted suicide when one comes off antidepressants. I certainly wouldn't expect Big Pharma to be interested in doing such a study.

Muslim screaming ‘there is no god but Allah’ stabs two Christians

Sharia apologists in the West routinely insist that Sharia only applies to Muslims, and that non-Muslims therefore need not be concerned about it. They are, of course, lying.

The Next Generation of Jihad Suicide Bombers is Being Trained

at an Islamic School in Houston

JUL 30, 2022 3:00 PM
BY DANIEL GREENFIELD
Jihad Watch

Americans have gotten very comfortable thinking that 9/11 is in the rearview mirror and that after Afghanistan and Iraq, we’ve done enough and we don’t have to think about it anymore. Islamic terrorist plots keep happening and migration is changing the country’s demographics. Mehmet Oz’s GOP/MAGA Senate nomination in PA has been a political game changer that has mostly flown under the radar. Gitmo is being emptied. We think we’ve won when actually we’re losing. Badly.

Here’s a little preview of what’s coming.

The lines include, “I make an oath…one day when you need me, I will be your martyr.”
The intensity of these children is truly frightening. They actually believe what they are singing.

Here’s a little background.

The Islamic Education Center of Houston, Texas, is organizing a “group recitation” — sung by children as young as four — of a new Iranian anthem saluting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

“The song Salam Farmande is an expression of one’s love for the Imam of our age,” says the center.

And a little more.

Iran has marked the 33rd anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s death with a new revolutionary anthem sung by boys and girls segregated in town squares, mosques and stadiums across the country.

In order to convey to the young generations the zeal of the 1979 revolutionary days, the regime has resorted to making multiple music videos of children born in the last decade, singing the anthem, “Salute Commander.” They give a military salute, pledging their unswerving loyalty to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The original Persian lyrics of the anthem are heavily ideological: “In spite of my small size, when the time comes I will rise up for you … I am a child but the life of my family and I belong to you.”

The children also raise their right arm and sing: “I make an oath to become your Qassem Soleimani when you need me,” and pledge to become Khamenei’s “nameless soldiers,” a reference to Iran’s intelligence operatives.

When the children in the UK sing “We wait under the flag of our leaders,” there should be no doubt that they refer not to the Queen, but to the Supreme Leader of Iran.

MEMRI had documented a previous effort by the Islamic Education Center of Houston.

On February 20, 2019, the Islamic Education Center of Houston, Texas uploaded to its YouTube channel a video of a February 17 ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution. Morteza Kazemian, a tenth grader, spoke and said that the United States continues to sanction Iran because it is scared of it and that America’s two goals in the Middle East are to support Israel and Saudi Arabia. The audience chanted: “Away with the humiliation… Allah Akbar! Khamenei is our Leader!” In addition, young boys wearing scarves and green headbands sang a song that went: “We are your followers, you are our Leader… We are your soldiers, and together we can all be your power… May Allah always keep your hand upon us… A warrior just like the Battle of Khaybar… May you always be the light to our guidance.”

Khaybar notes the beginning of the Islamic ethnic cleansing of the Jews which originated the phrase, “Allahu Akbar”.

The real war at home is still coming.

Germany: Police warmly embrace knife-wielding Muslim migrant

right after he stabs German

“The foreigner is always the victim: Berlin’s do-gooder police

embraced knife-wielding African after the deed,”

Translated from “Der Ausländer ist immer das Opfer: Berlins Gutmenschen-Polizei umarmte Messer-Afrikaner nach Tat,”

Journalisten Watch,
August 2, 2022

In Berlin, the 41-year-old Moroccan Mounir M. is currently on trial for a violent crime in a public park, with which he involuntarily helped to reinforce the lesson that a concerned father wanted to teach his daughter: The father had wanted to show the 12-year-old how dangerous it was to be in Berlin’s parks late at night. In the end, Mounir M. made sure in a bloody way that the anticipatory educational measures were fully justified.

What exactly had happened? On August 11 last year, shortly before midnight, 40-year-old Thomas K. and his daughter were arguing loudly in the park in Charlottenburg. The father criticised her for having crossed the de facto no-go areas of a Berlin park at that time of night and wanted to make it clear to her how dangerous it was to be in that area at that time of night (and in view of the conditions in Berlin not only at that time) – due to the migrant troublemakers usually encountered there, including the prevalence of violence and drugs.

Drunk, aggressive, armed with knives

“She was way too late from soccer practice,” explained Thomas K. “I was worried, went to meet her. Saw her slowly strolling out of the park – in the middle of the night! She knows that she shouldn’t go that way!” And further: “I said to her: We’re going back so you can understand why you shouldn’t do that! We argued. I lost sight of her in the park.” Shortly thereafter, her father rediscovered her – and had to realize that the self-fulfilling prophecy was already in full swing: “When she came back, a man followed her.”

This was the accused Moroccan Mounir M. When the father rushed to his daughter’s aid, he immediately attacked Tomas K. M. threw a full beer bottle, a second bottle splintered at the father’s feet. “My daughter screamed,” said K.. “The man forced me to my knees and said that it wasn’t my daughter at all. I shouted to her: Run away!” Shortly thereafter, the knife flashes in the North African’s hand, with which he stabbed his (her) father several times. He remembers: “I have no idea how I got out of there alive. Two days later I woke up in the hospital.”

Of course: the perpetrator had a “blackout”

The consequence of this renewed “negotiation of daily cultural coexistence” in this case for Thomas K.: serious injuries, several operations, almost complete blindness in one eye and severe damage to the other, permanent scars on his face. The Moroccan, however, claims that he suffered a “blackout,” presumably briefed by standard procedure from lawyers in the asylum lobby. “I can’t explain what happened,” he said. From his point of view, the following happened: “I lost my job and drank a lot of beer in the park. At night I heard a female voice in the park, there was apparently an argument with a man, I just wanted to help…” He only regained consciousness on a park bench after a policewoman took care of him. “I was covered in blood, but the blood wasn’t mine,” he continued.

Who doesn’t know that – you lose your job, get drunk in the park and put a knife in your pocket just in case, so that you can be on the spot quickly if you meet a German father who abuses his daughter again? Apparently, the Berlin police, who met the Moroccan after the incident in the park, believed blindly in this do-gooder tale, because there is no other way to explain what they did first according to the record: they “embraced and comforted” the bloody perpetrator – on the assumption that he was the victim, while Thomas K. was lying unconscious next to him in the park.

Consequences of brainwashing

Apparently, the officer did not even think that the migrant Mounir M. could be anything other than the victim. This is the result of political brainwashing in Germany, which – in a grotesque reversal of reality – sees native biological Germans principally as potential racists, xenophobia and “perpetrators” – and foreigners as victims by default.

In view of the permanent indoctrination by Berlin politicians and the German framing media, this is no wonder. There is hardly a crime scene or any other production of public broadcasting, including the “Nachrichten,” in which the foreigner is not the victim of racism and the lies of white native Germans.

The bad Germans, the defenseless migrants

This distorted image, which is widespread everywhere, has probably become so deeply ingrained in the subconscious of German “policemen” that they automatically assume that a crying migrant must be the victim – if in doubt of right-wing extremist violence, but in any case more traumatic and discriminatory…

“Children among Christians Slain in Attacks in Two States in Nigeria,”

“Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah and your enemies…” (Quran 8:60)

Morning Star News,
August 2, 2022:

ABUJA, Nigeria (Morning Star News) – Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Sunday (July 31) killed seven Christians, including four children, in an attack in Plateau state, Nigeria, following months of violence in neighboring Taraba state, sources said.

Following a July 21 attack in Fusa village, Plateau state that left five Christians dead, assailants on Sunday (July 31) invaded Danda Chigwi village in the state’s Jos South County shortly after 7 p.m., said area resident Dagah Dung.

A Christian youth leader in the village, Rwang Tengwong, said in a press statement that two other people were injured in the attack southwest of Jos, including a 4-month-old baby whose hand was cut off. Tengwong identified the slain as Ruth Gyang Bot, 16; Chundung Pam Gyang, 9; Mercy James Gyang, 12; Benjamin Pam Gyang, 5; Pam Gyang Dawho, 59; Nvou Pam Gyang, 43; and Jah Dung Pam, 50.

Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Movement (BYM), said the four females and three males slain were members of two families and were attacked in their homes.

Wounded in the attack, he said, was Lyop John Dung, 40, and, David Pam Gyang, “a 4-month- old baby whose hand was amputated by the attackers.” They were being treated at Vom Christian Hospital, operated by the Church of Christ In Nations (COCIN).

Dachung Bagos, who represents Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the attack as beastly in a press statement on Monday (Aug. 1).

“This incident has raised concerns over the readiness of security agencies to tackle once and for all the guerrilla style of killing which has been incessant in my constituency and Plateau state,” Bagos said. “Intelligence reports have it that the attackers had sent signals before now, and no action was taken on the part of the security agencies to curtail it; this is sad. I am angry and enraged by the daily killing within and around my constituency.”

On July 21 in Fobur town’s Fusa village, Jos East County, Fulani herdsmen killed five Christians, local residents said. Plateau State Command spokesman Alfred Alabo issued a statement confirming the attack.

“The Commissioner of Police condoles with the people of Fobur town, Fusa village, and the families of the five persons who were killed on the July 21,” Alabo said. “He assures the families of the deceased and the entire local government that efforts are on top gear to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act for them to face justice.”

Yeah, right!

Taraba State Chaos

In northeast Nigeria’s Taraba state, Rimamnde Shawulu Kwewum, a member of the National Assembly who represents Takum/Donga/Ussa/Yangtu SDA Federal Constituency, said in a press statement that terrorists killed more than 30 people in predominantly Christian communities across two counties from July 5 to July 12.

“Terrorists have continued the unabated destruction of settlements in Takum and Ussa Local Government Area of Taraba state,” he said. “The avoidable killings and destruction began on April 17, 2022.”…

John Bolton confesses to planning coups

Anneke de Laaf
Facebook

Apparently this is so accepted that Dutch media didn’t bother to report it. I doubt he was the only one or the first, in fact, I know he was not.

“Bolton spoke about participation in the preparation of coup d'état in an interview on CNN. When the journalist suggested that "you don't need to have a brilliant mind" for this, Bolton countered, saying that he "helped with the planning of coups" in other parts of the world and that this requires painstaking work.

Dutch media might not have found this story newsworthy, but several American and foreign newsrooms did, including The Washington Post:

So what coups might John Bolton have been involved in, exactly?

Tuesday’s hearing of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol led to a remarkable admission: A member of President Donald Trump’s senior team confessed to having plotted a coup.

But not the attempted coup that occurred on Jan. 6, and not a member of Trump’s team at that point.

The admission came from former national security adviser John Bolton, and it came with the caveat that the coups he had planned were targeted at foreign countries.

Bolton made the surprising claim during an interview Tuesday with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Bolton was fired by Trump in late 2019, just before the country learned of the president’s efforts to pressure Ukraine into announcing a probe of Joe Biden. Since leaving Trump’s team, Bolton has been a fervent critic of his former boss and vice versa.

In the interview, Bolton objected to the idea that the events of Jan. 6 were part of “a carefully planned coup d’etat aimed at the Constitution.” His reasoning was personal: Trump was simply too much of a mess to construct anything that organized.

Tapper disagreed, saying that “one doesn’t have to be brilliant to attempt a coup.”

Then, Bolton’s admission.

“I disagree with that. As somebody who has helped plan coups d’etat, not here, but other places, it takes a lot of work,” Bolton said. “And that’s not what he did.”

We can set aside the idea that Trump “didn’t do a lot of work” as he tried to retain power after losing the 2020 election. This is subjective, certainly, although one could make a robust case that Trump invested a tremendous amount of time and energy into doing precisely that. Let’s instead just consider what Bolton is blithely copping to here: helping to try to overthrow foreign leaders. He made the admission, it seems, largely so that he could contrast his own brilliance with Trump’s dopiness, but he made the admission, nonetheless.

Tapper, of course, had a follow-up question. It ran along the lines of: Uh, where?

“I wrote about Venezuela in the book, and it turned out not to be successful,” Bolton said. “Not that we had all that much to do with it, but I saw what it took for an opposition to try to overturn an illegally elected president.”

“I feel like there’s other stuff you’re not telling me,” Tapper replied.

“I’m sure there is,” Bolton said.

So let’s assume that there is “other stuff,” no matter how useful it is to Bolton’s public presentation that he be seen as a powerful behind-the-scenes actor. When and where might Bolton have had his fingers in foreign coup events?

The Cline Center at the University of Illinois tracks coup attempts (including the one in the United States on Jan. 6). Since Bolton joined government during the Reagan administration in 1982, there have been more than 350 coup attempts around the world, nearly 150 of them successful. That includes events (such as Jan. 6) that one might not think of as a coup attempt — like the U.S.-led toppling of the government in Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Of those 350-plus coup attempts, 191 occurred when Bolton held a position with the U.S. government. (We will assume that Bolton was not involved in attempted coups while outside government service, although, of course, who knows.) That figure, however, includes coup attempts that occurred when Bolton was in positions that one might assume were less coup-adjacent, like serving as an assistant administrator at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) or as an assistant attorney general in the Justice Department. There were 131 coup attempts internationally that occurred when Bolton served in the State Department, as U.N. ambassador or as Trump’s national security adviser — the tenure during which the Venezuela coup attempt unfolded.

Then Bolton joined State. In October 1989, there was an attempt to oust Panamanian dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega. He was removed from power following an American invasion that December. In 1992, a coup in Afghanistan similarly led to the ouster of the country’s leader, a longtime ally of the Soviet Union. There were also coup attempts in a number of other countries while Bolton served under President George H.W. Bush, including the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh and Romania, where General Secretary Nicolae Ceausescu was ousted.

Bolton returned to government under George W. Bush. Besides the invasion of Afghanistan, perhaps the most significant coup tracked by the Cline Center’s Coup D'état Project was the March 2004 removal of Jean-Bertrand Aristide as president of Haiti. Aristide blamed American actors for the coup. But other countries saw similar attempts, including the November 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia that ousted the country’s Soviet-allied leader, Eduard Shevardnadze.

In 2018, Bolton became Trump’s third national security adviser. It was during this period that rebels tried more than once to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power, unsuccessfully. Bolton’s attempt to distance himself from the planning of those efforts — “I saw what it took” to effect an overthrow — does little to diminish American involvement.

This, again, was the only coup attempt to which Bolton admitted involvement, despite his telling Tapper that he had helped plan similar insurrections. (In an interview with Newsmax, Bolton dismissed questions about his comments as being a function of “snowflakes out there who don’t understand what you need to do to protect the United States.”) Perhaps he was puffing himself up at Trump’s expense, casting himself as a brilliant strategist who had deigned to work for the fumbling Trump. Or perhaps one of those other 131 coup attempts that occurred while Bolton was in government bear, however faintly, his fingerprints.

In Albania, divers fish for WWII bombs

Under a cliff in Vlora bay, one of the most beautiful sites on the Albanian Riviera, a diver emerges from the water carrying an artillery shell which he carefully places on the pebbly beach.

Beneath the crystal-clear water of the Adriatic, shells and grenades dating back to World War II rust on the seabed, polluting the water and posing a deadly threat to life.

Aboard the "Pluton" diving support vessel, a group of some 10 French and Albanian de-mining divers are on a joint mission to find and remove the munitions -- but nobody knows how many still remain.

In less than two hours, the divers collected an impressive 85 pieces of ammunition, which were likely deliberately thrown into the sea by occupying Italian troops over seven decades ago.

"It's joint work with the Albanian navy, which knows the site better than we do," Captain Aymeric Barazer de Lannurien, commander of the French contingent, told AFP.

Specialists recovered a total of 310 devices during last year's joint Franco-Albanian effort.

Barazer de Lannurien said most of the shells found were artillery shells, lodged between rocks on the seabed.

- 'One or two grenades' -

"We found one or two grenades that were on the bottom between the rocks, easily accessible to the population (that) could be dangerous for swimmers," he recalled of last year's mission.

This time around, the team said they recovered mortars and shells with calibres ranging from 20 mm to 155 mm.

While there are no official estimates of the quantities of submerged munitions, experts estimate that at least 20 World War II wrecks are located near Albania's Adriatic coast.

The teams are well-versed in handling the potentially lethal cast-offs, but an ambulance is parked nearby just in case.

Divers pass the explosive devices between them before carefully lining them up on the beach, reminders of past conflicts.

Albanian troops then collect the shells and destroy them at a military base in the capital Tirana.

The teams face not only the ever-present risk of detonation, but also choppy seas and scorching heat.

U.S. to ship another $550M security package to Ukraine

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The United States on Monday announced it was shipping Ukraine an additional $550 million in weapons to aid the war-torn country in its fight against Russia.

The drawdown of weapons from the Department of Defense stockpile for Ukraine is the 17th since August and equals more than $8 billion in U.S. funded-arms for Kyiv since Russia invaded on Feb. 24.

Biden continues to transfer American dollars from taxpayers to weapons manufacturers. $8bn works out to about $25 per person, or $55 per taxpayer.

The security package was authorized by U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday, with top-ranking U.S. brass informing their Ukrainian counterparts of the decision, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said during a press briefing in Washington, D.C.

The Department of Defense published a list detailing the security package as containing 75,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition and additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems.

"To meet its evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities," it said.

Of course, the real 'key capability' is to keep the proxy war going which will bring great destruction upon Ukraine and death and destruction upon the population.

The package was announced as Ukraine has been asking allies for additional air defense support systems including last month when Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska told Congress in Washington, D.C, that it requires them to stop Russia's terror.

"I'm asking for air defense systems in order for rockets not to kill children in their strollers, in order for rockets not to destroy children's rooms and kill entire families," she told the lawmakers.

Am I the only one who sees the madness in that statement? She wants to stop rockets from killing children and families, so she asks for more rockets from the USA. As if only Russian rockets are capable of killing civilians.

The same day the package was unveiled four previously announced HIMARS from the United States arrived in Ukraine, Kyiv's minister of defense, Oleksii Reznikov, tweeted.

"We have proven to be smart operators of this weapon," he said. "The sound of the [HIMARS] volley has become a top hit ... of this summer at the front line!"

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who has been calling for additional weapons for Ukraine, called the package and the arrival of the HIMARS "good news" for Kyiv, stating the systems have degraded Russia's ability to make war.

"HIMARS have enabled Ukrainian forces to reach behind Russian lines to strike critical logistics nodes and command & control centers," he tweeted. "This has frustrated Russia's attempts to continue its brutal invasion.

"I urge the admin to continue sending more HIMARS and ammo to [Ukraine]."

For his leadership and "robust" support, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Biden in a statement.

"Together, we are defending values of freedom common to both [Ukraine] & [the United States]," Zelensky said. "New defense assistance package is bringing us closer to victory."

The announcement came as the first shipment of Ukrainian grain was permitted to leave the Russian-blockaded city of Odessa amid the war.

Guterres: Humanity is one mistake away from nuclear annihilation

Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The threat the world currently faces has not been seen since the height of the Cold War, the head of the United Nations said while warning "humanity is one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation."

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the warning Monday during a speech to open a conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the landmark 1970 pact that's been joined by 191 governments vowing to prevent the spread of atomic arms.

The 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons runs until Aug. 26 when the implementation of the agreement will be reviewed.

During his remarks, Guterres said the world needs this treaty now as much as ever before, citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, North Korea's development of its nuclear arsenal and tensions in the Middle East.

"The clouds that parted following the end of the Cold War are gathering once more. We have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy," he said. "Nor is it a shield from geopolitical tensions boiling over into nuclear conflict."

He said the conference is being held at a time when the risks of proliferation are growing, protections against escalation are weakening and crisis "with nuclear undertones" are festering.

"That is why this Review Conference is so important," he said. "It's an opportunity to hammer-out the measures that will help avoid certain disaster."

Fears of nuclear war have grown since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. Amid the conflict, Russia has repeatedly suggested that it would retaliate against intervening NATO nations in its invasion with nuclear arms as well as having turned Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia, into a military base knowing that an attack against it would risk catastrophe.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Moscow during his remarks at the conference of engaging in "reckless, dangerous nuclear saber-rattling" and of taking the notion of a human shield "to an entirely different and horrific level."

Blinken added that Russia's war in Ukraine is "directly relevant" to what brings them to this conference.

"Its actions are also contrary to the assurances that it provided to Ukraine in 1994" that included handing over its sovereignty and independence in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons it inherited when the Soviet Union dissolved, he said.

"What message does this send to any country around the world that may think that it needs to have nuclear weapons to protect, to defend, to deter aggression against its sovereignty and independence? The worst possible message," he said.

Russia, which is among the signatories of the treaty, rejected the accusations, with its foreign ministry tweeting that it took over the Zaporizhzhia plant in order to protect it from "nationalist formations & foreign mercenaries."

Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent a letter of greetings to the conference, stating Moscow "consistently follows the letter and spirit of the Treaty."

"We believe that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and we stand for equal and indivisible security for all members of the world community," Putin wrote.
