Anyone who is surprised by this is naive. The Qur’an teaches that non-Muslims are the “most vile of created beings” (98:6) and that Muslims are the “best of people” (3:110). Viennese mosques are promoting Islamic separatism and actively obstructing the integration of Muslims into Austrian society, according to a new report about mosques and Islamic associations in the Austrian capital. The in-depth investigative study also reveals that foreign governments continue to exert enormous influence on the practice of Islam in Austria, even though a so-called Islam Law prohibits such meddling.

The research, which provides evidence of active support for jihadi and Islamist organizations at several of the most prominent and influential mosques in Austria, sheds light on the depth of the challenge posed by the encroachment of political Islam at mosques in the country. The report serves as an important wake-up call for Austria and other Western countries struggling with the integration of Muslim minorities.

The 113-page report — “Mosques in Vienna” (Moscheen in Wien) — was published on February 23 by the Austrian Integration Fund (Österreichischer Integrationsfonds, ÖIF), an agency tasked with integrating immigrants into Austrian society. The study evaluated randomly selected Friday sermons (khutbah) at 14 of Vienna’s most representative mosques to determine if they were encouraging or discouraging Muslim integration.

The study reveals that Turkish mosques are, collectively, by far the greatest obstacles to integrating Muslims into Austrian society. Most Turkish mosques “take a negative view of the social integration of their members,” according to the report, which adds that this is highly relevant to the integration process “because ethnic Turks comprise the largest subgroup of Muslims in Austria.” Not coincidentally, the Turkish government continues to try to expand its influence over the practice of Islam in Austria.

Nearly all Sunni Muslim mosques in Austria belong to the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (Islamischen Glaubensgemeinschaft in Österreich, IGGÖ), the state-recognized Muslim umbrella group that represents more than 250 mosques in the country. IGGÖ is effectively controlled by the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. IGGÖ’s current president, Türkiye-born Ümit Vural, is closely linked to the Turkish nationalist Milli Görüş movement and IGGÖ’s mufti, Türkiye-born Mustafa Mullaoǧlu, is tied to the Muslim Brotherhood. IGGÖ plays a “central role” in spreading the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to Islamism expert Lorenzo Vidino. FWI reached out to IGGÖ for a comment on the report but did not receive a reply.

The report’s lead author, historian Heiko Heinisch, told FWI that “with the Milli Görüş movement, ATIB [the Turkish-Islamic Union for Cultural and Social Cooperation in Austria, which is part of the Turkish government’s Religious Affairs Directorate, known as Diyanet] and the Muslim Brotherhood, three major players of international Islamism are active in Austria.” He added that “our report shows that these major players are in part actively working against the integration of Muslims into society.”

Al-Hidaya Mosque, Vienna

Vienna’s single-most problematic mosque, the study shows, is the notorious Islamic Association of Austria (Islamische Vereinigung Österreich, IVÖ), commonly known as Al-Hidaya Mosque, which is controlled by IGGÖ and, by extension, the Muslim Brotherhood. All the evaluated sermons from this mosque were categorized as “extremist.” IVÖ “rejects, as a matter of principle, Austria and Austrian society, its values, its laws and its constitution,” the report says.

IVÖ, an Arabic-language mosque, has a long history of glorifying jihad and martyrdom and seeking to establish a parallel society in opposition to Austria’s liberal democratic order. IVÖ’s imam, 53-year-old Egypt-born Ibrahim al-Demerdash, is known for his support of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas. He has been accused of radicalizing a “new generation” of young Muslim males in the foundational doctrines, practices, and tactics of political Islam. FWI asked IVÖ for a comment but did not receive a reply.

Imam Ali Islamic Center, Vienna

Another subversive mosque is the Imam Ali Islamic Center (Islamischen Zentrum Imam Ali, IZIA), which cooperates closely with the Islamic Center of Hamburg (Islamischen Zentrum Hamburg, IZH), described by German intelligence officials as a leading “propaganda center” of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Europe. Both mosques are well known for spreading anti-Western, anti-Semitic, and anti-Israel extremist ideology.

On a more positive note, sermons delivered at the Arabic-language Islamic Center of Vienna (Islamisches Zentrum Wien) are described as “cosmopolitan” and “open to integration.” The mosque, the largest and oldest in Vienna, was built by Saudi Arabia in the late 1970s and is now jointly controlled by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Malaysia. “This mosque,” the report states, “scores in all categories as the most pro-democracy, the most open and the most tolerant.”

According to the report, none of the surveyed mosques — which cater to Muslims from Albania, Bosnia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye — openly identifies with Austrian society. With rare exceptions, sermons in Viennese mosques are not available in German, according to the study, and fully one-third of the evaluated mosques promote ethnic and religious segregation. Many of the mosques promote a dichotomous worldview that opposes ideological and religious pluralism and brands non-Muslims as enemies of Islam. They also appear to be directly or indirectly controlled by foreign governments….

Crossing the areas surrounding Milan Central Station has become really dangerous. This has never been a particularly safe area, nor are the areas adjacent to the large railway buildings in all cities, but in recent years, thanks to indiscriminate immigration policies, the situation has seriously worsened, as demonstrated by the countless episodes of violence that are recorded almost daily at the hands of foreigners who live by their wits. Robberies, violence, fights and thefts have become a serious security problem, which the Municipality does not seem to be interested in noticing. The latest incident dates back to Sunday, when a knife attack on a man who was drinking beer was recorded.

Two Tunisians aged 47 and 39 were attacked by three other men of African origin because, despite Ramadan, they were seen drinking a beer. The holy month for the Arab religion, in fact, stipulates that from dawn to dusk neither food nor water is consumed. Moreover, practicing Muslims are usually abstainers, so the three attackers saw that gesture as a serious offense against religion and decided to intervene violently. During the ensuing dispute, the 49-year-old was hit in the side by a blade. His life is not in danger and he was immediately accompanied in yellow code to the Milan polyclinic to carry out the necessary checks, but his conditions do not currently cause concern.

The two attacked were identified by the carabinieri patrol which arrived on the spot after the report, but the three attackers disappeared before the uniformed police arrived, so it was not possible to stop them. Now the military are analyzing the images of the security cameras to try to trace their identity, also thanks to the description provided by the two victims. As much as the left wants to deny it, the perception of security in Milan is at an all-time low.

Just a few days ago, in that area, several people were stabbed by a North African who was attempting to carry out muggings. Residents are afraid, tourists do not feel safe among irregular immigrants and gangs of Roma pickpockets. 

The central station is no man’s land and the mayor doesn’t seem to care: evidently the ideological battles against the government are more important than the safety and decorum of the city he administers.

This is part of the warping of Swedish society by the high numbers of Muslim migrants taking over that once-peaceful country.

The school’s new everyday life: Murder around the corner

The latest fatal shooting happened just a few hundred meters from an elementary school.

The place was Södertälje.

It was the 60th murder in Sweden this year.

It is a new everyday life for students and teachers who in several cases came close to gun violence.

“Parents come to the development talks in protective vests,” says a teacher who has worked for a long time in Järva, which, like Södertälje, has been hit hard by murders near schools.

“Gunvor,” who is in her 60s, has worked as a teacher in Järva all her professional life and got used to a violent and threatening work environment.

Being called “whore,” being told “I’m going to f**k your mother” and witnessing brutal fights is everyday for her and her colleagues, she says.

“I have considered wearing a protective vest. Everyone else has one. Even the parents, they come to the development talks in the West. It’s not strange, the stop at school is just one of many for them.

The hair is light and combed back in a tassel.

“At school, the students say I’m dirty. By ‘dirty’ they mean that I am white and Christian.”

She continues:

“Don’t touch me, you’re dirty,” they shout.

Every other teacher has been subjected to physical violence by students; seven out of ten in situations where students behaved aggressively or in a generally threatening manner.

In the report “Håll käften kärring,” it appears that threats and violence are common in leisure centers, preschool classes and grades 1-6.

Almost half of the upper secondary teachers and more than fifth upper secondary teachers have been exposed to a threatening situation by a student in the last two years. This is shown in the Teachers’ Association’s report When security is lacking.

She says that students sought her out at home after she reprimanded a student in the classroom.

“He started stalking me a couple of times after I worked in the evening. I don’t really care that much, but he said: ‘be careful’ and stuff like that.”

“At one point, he and his friends were standing outside the door,” she says.

“I heard how they tried to get in through the door. Then about 53 text messages came with the meaning that I should be careful, there were also pictures of me. They sent lyrics from rap songs.”

Basically, it is the money that keeps her working and she lives nicely at an exclusive address.

But she also feels a kind of revenge.

“I am not afraid at work, but it is unpleasant. The wages are very high and that helps. They won’t make me move, I’m enjoying myself anyway.”

Among the staff, people have resigned, she says, and the talk is going on between them about who to watch out for, she says. Who has dangerous family members or is active himself.

Have you tried to take this further and raise the alarm about the situation for yourself or the children in question?

“Never in my life would I make a report of concern. I don’t want problems. Second, there will never be a follow-up. It just stops there.”

“Gunvor” says that she would never take public transportation to work.

“It feels too unsafe.”

Instead, she has arranged her own garage space from a man who, for a fee, guards her car so that it does not get damaged.

Kerstin Aronsson is a school nurse and has worked at Rinkebyskolan in the Järva area for over 30 years.

She means that part of the job is dealing with “frogs jumping out of the mouths” of the children.

“And the frogs can contain things that can be perceived as threatening. We work with children. Their brains haven’t fully grown yet and they sometimes lack impulse control. Then they can eviscerate things, but this is best met with a low-affective approach.”

Do you feel unsafe at work?

“No. It is clear that there may be situations when people who do not belong to our school are in the entrance, for example, but then it is quite effective to simply ask what they are doing there and if they have no business, they can leave.”

For several years, Järva has been in the focus of shootings and gang conflicts. Recently, however, Södertälje has sailed around as the worst in the class with several fatal shootings and revenge attacks in a short time.

Seven murders – in a city of 100,000 inhabitants.

“Södertälje is Sweden’s most police-prioritized area right now,” says commissioner Gunnar Appelgren in Expressen’s crime podcast Krimrummet.

Both Järva and Södertälje are considered particularly vulnerable areas, according to the police’s assessments.

Expressen managed to produce this entire report without mentioning Muslims, migrants, Islam, the Quran, or anything else relevant to the motivation behind the violence.

Greek police uncover Pakistani plot to attack Jewish synagogue

A Pakistani jihadi group operating in the Greek capital was unveiled to be masterminded by a man who is wanted for murder in Iran and who recruited two men aged 27 and 29 to carry out a series of targeted terrorist attacks against innocent civilians and a Jewish restaurant/synagogue.

The terrorist organisation was dismantled by Greek police and intelligence officers.

The first target for the series of attacks, and in which the planning was almost completed, was a Jewish restaurant which also functioned as a synagogue. The restaurant-synagogue is in the central Athens neighbourhood of Psirri.

The would-be terrorists had chosen to attack either with weapons, explosives, or setting fire at a time when there would be more than 50 people in the building. In other words, the goal was a mass bloodbath.

For each dead person, the two Pakistani perpetrators would receive 15,000 euros from the Pakistani mastermind of the terrorist network, Proto Thema reported.

The case began to unfold two months ago when information about the network’s activity reached the National Intelligence Service (EYP) of Greece. The Anti-Terrorism Department were also informed.

The two Pakistanis, who worked in various manual jobs in Attica and the countryside were immediately observed by intelligence officers and on February 15th and 16th they were arrested as they did not have the necessary papers to stay legally in Greece.

From their mobile phones, communications with the leader were found. The pair had carried out surveillance on Aesopou Street in Psirri. They then received the final instructions for carrying out the attack and began looking for more people to help carry out the terrorist attack….

It was recently revealed that up to 50,000 Pakistanis are living in Greece with fake papers, most having entered posing as Syrians during the 2015-2016 refugee crisis and without any real formal documents or identity papers.

With the mainstream media overjoyed at the appointment of Humza Yousaf as the First Minister of Scotland after winning the leadership contest of the Scottish National Party (SNP) on Monday, troubling facts about the country’s first Muslim national leader are coming out.

While The Los Angeles Times ran the headline declaring: “Muslim leader for Scotland a sign of U.K. political diversity,” other news outlets questioned Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf’s alleged links to the Gaza-based Islamic terrorist group Hamas and his hostile stance towards Israel.

Yousaf “has a history of meeting with Hamas and has called for an arms embargo against the State of Israel,” the Jewish News Syndicate reported March 29.

In 2008, Yousaf met senior Hamas operative Mohammad Sawalha, recent media reports reveal. Sawalha is a known Hamas operative, who was formerly the West Bank military chief for the Islamic terrorist group and was on Israel’s wanted list.

Sawalha also held a leadership position at London’s jihad-linked Finsbury Park Mosque. Sawalha was “one of Finsbury Park Mosque’s six trustees,” the UK newspaper Independent reported on November 7, 2017.

Scottish First Minister hopeful Humza Yousaf met former Hamas chief

Humza Yousaf, a contender to replace (he has now replaced) Nicola Sturgeon as Scotland’s First Minister, met Holyrood officials with a former senior Hamas commander, the JC can reveal.

Yousaf, 37, now the Scottish Health Secretary, attended the high-level meeting with Hamas leader Mohammad Sawalha, also known by nom de guerre Abu Obada.

Despite Sawalha’s history — he had been named by BBC Panorama in 2006 as having “masterminded much of Hamas’ political and military strategy” — a meeting was secured with a SNP cabinet minister and government officials at the Scottish Parliament.

The meeting took place in 2008, when Yousaf was 22 and working as a parliamentary assistant for the late-Bashir Ahmad, Scotland’s first Muslim MSP.

Sawalha had been Hamas’ West Bank military chief and was then appointed to its political leadership. He reportedly had fled in 1990 after being placed on a wanted list by Israel. Hamas had at the time been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the US, but the UK did not follow suit until 2021.

Scottish parliamentary questions reveal that Sawalha attended the meeting at Holyrood as a representative of Islam Expo, which was funded by a £2 million grant from Qatar and held in London in 2006 and 2008. (…)

The JC asked Yousaf about the meeting and if he was aware of Sawalha’s background. Yousaf did not respond on those points but said he himself had a “strong track record of standing up against every form of hatred, including antisemitism”.

Lord Carlile, the former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said: “Yousaf must address the circumstances in which he judged it appropriate to have close contact with Hamas supporters. He has to face these questions head on were he to become First Minister.”

So, he has become First Minister, but where are the questions coming from?

Mohamed Hassan Alim from Rinkeby was on the way to a life of crime – then his family sent him to a notorious educational institution in Somalia. There he was chained up and subjected to abuse, he tells SVT. Despite that, he defends his parents.

“I blame my relatives, but not my parents.”

Mohamed thought he was going to stay with relatives, but when he arrived in Mogadishu, he was put into a car and driven to the detention center. The beatings began immediately.

“They hit you under the heel, they hit you in the palm of the hand, in the back of the head – at points that hurt extremely.”

According to him, he was put in chains for a year and a half. It was all about breaking down the youth who were there and through fear making them susceptible to being converted into “true” Muslims.

Known to the authorities

Mohamed is not alone in being sent abroad to get away from a backsliding existence. A recent study from the Gender Equality Authority covers roughly 140 cases of children and young adults who have been taken out of Sweden against their will in recent years. Of those abducted, around 28 percent are young men who are sent on an educational journey.

It is common for the family to want to punish the children, or it is done out of goodwill. It could be that they think the child has been “Swedish,” ended up in crime or broke the family’s rules.

“Many who are abducted have been known to several authorities. But they have been too passive and have not carried out risk assessments. Or it has not been understood what measures are required. A passive approach by authorities often leads to an active approach by family and relatives,” says Mikael Thörn, head of unit at the Equality Authority.

Defending the parents

The study is based on interviews with people who have worked with young men who have been abducted. It does not provide a national picture, because it does not cover all municipalities.

“The majority of the cases that I have encountered have been of such a caliber that they may have been locked up, beaten and subjected to torture,” says Thörn.

Despite everything Mohamed Hassan Ali was subjected to on site, he defends his parents’ decision to send him away.

“They thought that it is better that their son was there than in a destructive environment here.”

Do they still think that? Maybe it's time to move back to Somalia?

The number of hotels being used to house asylum seekers in the UK is about to reach 400 as migrants continue to cross the Channel in small boats, MailOnline can reveal.

The milestone figure for Home Office contractors taking over hotels is likely to be reached imminently as efforts to convert redundant military bases into alternative accommodation centres.

Currently 395 hotels in the UK are understood to be being used to accommodate more than 51,000 people at a reported cost of £6.8million a day – but the number is constantly increasing as the Government battles to start moving some asylum seekers to Rwanda while their applications to stay in the UK are processed.

The use of hotels continues to create controversy with residents of cities, towns and villages upset about local beds being turned over to refugees instead of paying guests.

And asylum seekers themselves are also frequently unhappy about languishing in sometimes isolated hotels, and unable to work due to strict rules, a MailOnline investigation has found.

Typical were asylum seekers staying at the three-star Grosvenor Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, who told of their unhappiness about their living arrangements.

A family of four Sri Lankans (declined to be fully named) who are squashed into one small room – mum and dad, who is trying to work to support his family, and their six-year-old daughter and son, aged two-and-a-half.

Iraqi mother Neshteman Tahir, 37, said: ‘It’s awful here and there are too many problems. We don’t want to be living all together in a hotel, we want a house so we can be independent.’

Speaking in the grounds of the hotel which had a multi-million-pound refurbishment before closing to paying guests five months ago, she moaned: ‘No one likes living here.

‘We all hate it and we are shut in our rooms all day with nothing to do. The hotel is very, very bad. We want a proper home.’

Her eight-year-old son told how he went to a local school for five hours a day but had been unable to make friends.

He added: ‘I want a big house with a swing and trampoline in the garden and want to make friends. It is really boring here! Me and my mum need our own home.’

Did he come to the UK thinking everyone gets a big house? 

We also found refugees kicking their heels this week in the four star Great Hallingbury Manor Hotel near Takeley, Essex, with little to do apart from walking half a mile to buy snacks and drinks at a nearby Esso garage.

Scores of young men from Africa and other countries including Afghanistan have lived since last October at the Tudor-style hotel which describes its 43 rooms and suites on its website as being ‘progressively stylish, immensely comfortable and pristinely maintained’.

The arrival of the migrants has dismayed some residents of the new Mead Field Drive housing development, overlooking fields next door to the hotel.

One resident Kamila Kardzis said: ‘It seems wrong that they are getting a free roof over their head in a nice hotel.

‘You see them walking around with nice iPhones and smart clothes. They are all men. You do not see any women or children.’

Ms Kardzis who is Polish and has lived in the UK for 17 years, added: ‘I came here as a migrant as well – but I am working and pay taxes. I don’t claim benefits.

‘It would be better if they were allowed to work. Instead they have nothing to do all day and just sit around. It is not a good life for them.’

Ms Kardzis said she believed her security camera had captured footage of one of the migrants creeping around her back garden and looking through a window while she was decorating her home before moving in.

Refugee mum and her daughter (both unnamed) who moans: ‘We’re bored here, the rooms are too small and the food is very bad.’

She added: ‘I saw another guy wandering around outside our house just before 1am about a month ago. I asked him what he was doing and he didn’t reply. I just told him to get back to the hotel.’

Refrigeration engineer Ayden Yilmaz, 29, said he was angry about migrants being accommodated in the hotel while council officials had refused to house him after he split with his girlfriend who lives on Mead Field Drive.

The father-of-three said: ‘I have been sofa surfing, sleeping in my car and splashing out on the occasional night in a Travelodge. When I went to the council to try and get some help, they told me to rent privately, which I simply cannot afford.

‘I mentioned the migrants in the hotel when I spoke to the council, but it didn’t do me any good. It is just annoying that they come here and get a nice hotel room, while I was born here, work hard, pay tax and National Insurance and get nothing….

Denmark Supreme Court: It is illegal to deprive an IS woman of her citizenship

On the other hand, she argued that it was contrary to the principle of proportionality.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Immigration and Integration was acquitted by Copenhagen City Court in a similar case.

In that case, two twin sisters had been stripped of their Danish citizenship.

According to TV 2, the women were born in Denmark to Somali refugees, but grew up in England and do not speak Danish.

According to the media, they went together to the Islamic State in Syria as 16-year-olds in 2014.

I guess the safety of law-abiding Danish citizens is not considered in the requirements of proportionality. Only the criminal's rights are important.

Secretary of the Islamic Commission of Spain said that the Muslim population living in Spain has increased 10 times in the last 30 years, exceeding 2.5 million.

Mohamed Ajana told Anadolu that according to official records, 2.5 million, and according to unofficial figures, about 3 million Muslims live in Spain….

So, the question now is, how much will the Muslim population in Spain increase in the next 30 years? Is there any reason why it will not increase 10 times again? If it does, that means there will be 25 to 30 million Muslims in a country of about 50 million. From 5-6% to 50 to 60% of the population. Spain will be a Muslim country by 2055. Then, how long before Sharia is brought in?

He stated that more than one million Muslims in the country are Spanish citizens, some of them are immigrants and others are of Spanish origin.

Ajana also said that there are currently 53 Islamic federations serving the Muslim community in Spain, and that there are about 2,000 mosques.

He said the main problems that Muslims face are obtaining permits and licenses for the construction of mosques, the existence of only 40 Muslim cemeteries despite the increase in population, education, and Islamophobia.

ISIS Matchmaker Gets 18 Years in First Trial Under N.Y. Terrorism Law

After ISIS promised in 2014 that the world would “hear and understand the meaning of terrorism,” fervent western support came from a Jamaican preacher once imprisoned in Britain for urging violence, and later expelled from Kenya by officials fearing he would encourage radicalism.

Over the next three years, according to the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the preacher, Abdullah el-Faisal, helped ISIS any way he could, praising its ideology in lectures, publishing propaganda online and even acting as a marriage broker for its fighters.

Mr. Faisal was convicted this year of conspiracy and supporting terrorism after prosecutors presented evidence that he had discussed ISIS with an undercover New York City police officer and given her a phone number for a fighter in Syria.

On Thursday, Justice Maxwell Wiley of State Supreme Court in Manhattan sentenced Mr. Faisal to 18 years in prison, saying he had “continually advocated for murder, kidnapping and other violent crimes.”

Mr. Faisal’s trial marked the first time a defendant had faced a jury after being charged under state antiterrorism laws adopted in 2001, a week after the destruction of the World Trade Center. A handful of others have been charged under those laws and pleaded guilty.

Mr. Faisal was not accused of planning violence in New York City and had not set foot there during the period covered by his indictment. But undercover police officers with the Intelligence Bureau, whose members typically do not wear uniforms or badges, and communicate with other officers through handlers, exchanged messages with him from Manhattan, establishing jurisdiction for prosecutors.

Investigators’ testimony provided an unusual window into the secretive Intelligence Bureau, which has been criticized at times for compiling information on antiwar protesters and spying broadly on Muslims in New York and New Jersey.

“Manhattan will continue to be a target for those who want to harm this country,” said District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg. “Working with our federal and state law enforcement partners, our office stands at the ready to continue combating terrorism.”…

This is the moment counter-terror police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a Muslim man was set on fire after leaving a mosque.

Footage shows a suspect being detained by officers on Dudley Road in Edgbaston, Birmingham, after the pensioner in his 70s was sprayed with an unknown substance and set alight on nearby Shenstone Road on Monday.

The victim had been praying in front of a suspect described as being ‘Somalian’ by fellow worshippers, before he was followed home and attacked yards from his front door.

Yesterday afternoon police carried out the arrest after he was spotted by worshippers attempting to go back into the mosque as a funeral was about to begin. A source at the mosque said: ‘People recognised him because he had been coming here for a few weeks.’

The attack came exactly three weeks after a similar incident 120 miles away in Ealing, when another worshipper, 82, was set ablaze after being followed out of the West London Islamic Centre. He was taken to hospital for treatment for severe burns to his face and arms.

In the Birmingham incident, residents’ security cameras showed the younger man engaging the grey-haired victim in conversation outside the mosque, before he carried out the attack. As the victim screamed on the pavement, cars continued to drive past just yards away….

Five Killed In Al-Shabaab Suicide Attack In Somalia

At least five people were killed and 11 others wounded, including a regional governor, in a suicide attack on Tuesday in southern Somalia, police said, a bombing claimed by Al-Shabaab militants.

A vehicle laden with explosives ploughed into a guest house hosting government officials in Bardera, 450 kilometres (279 miles) west of the capital Mogadishu, said Hussein Adan, police commander for the area.

"The explosion destroyed most parts of the building and five security guards died in the blast," Adan told AFP.

Eleven people, including the governor Ahmed Bulle Gared, were injured, he added.

Al-Shabaab, linked to Al-Qaeda, has been waging a bloody jihadist insurgency against the central government in the fragile Horn of Africa nation for about 15 years.

The group claimed responsibility for the attack through their Shahada News Agency, according to the US monitoring group SITE.

Mohamud Saney, who witnessed Tuesday's attack, said he had "never heard anything as big as the explosion."

"It shook the earth like an earthquake."

In recent months, the Somali army and local clan militias have retaken chunks of territory from the militants in an operation backed by US air strikes and an African Union force known as ATMIS.

Despite the gains by the pro-government forces, the militants have continued to demonstrate an ability to strike with lethal force against civilian and military targets.

In the deadliest Al-Shabaab attack since the offensive was launched last year, 121 people were killed in October by two car bomb explosions at the education ministry in Mogadishu in October.

The UN last month said that 2022 was the deadliest year for civilians in Somalia since 2017, largely because of an increase in mass-casualty attacks by the jihadist group.

Although forced out of Mogadishu and other main urban centres more than a decade ago, Al-Shabaab remains entrenched in parts of rural central and southern Somalia.

A man was disembarked from the TGV which connects France to Spain. He was actively wanted by the Italian authorities.

It was the Policia Nacional which indicated that it had arrested, during a banal identity check, a dangerous fugitive wanted in Italy.

The arrest took place within the framework of the joint Franco-Spanish patrol which intervenes in the (rare) TGVs which connect the Perpignan-Figuères axis. The police were intrigued by the quality of the identity papers provided by a passenger.

After verification, it turned out that the man was not who he claimed to be since his residence permit in Italy as well as his Tunisian passport were fake. Disembarked from the TGV at La Jonquera, further checks revealed that this man is the main suspect in the homicide of a military nurse in Italy.

The motive for the murder still unclear

Already sentenced to 5 years in prison in Italy for drug trafficking and sexual violence, the fugitive is considered very dangerous, according to the Spanish police. Aged 33, Mohamed A. allegedly killed Salvatore Lucente Pipitone, a 44-year-old soldier, in Rome on the night of February 10 to 11.

A case that made the headlines in Italian newspapers. The soldier worked as a nurse in a hospital in Rome and was attacked on a street in a neighborhood plagued by drugs and prostitution while recovering his vehicle. He died a little later in a city hospital from his injuries, including a deep wound behind his neck.

The Italian news agency Ansa indicates that the investigators first believed in a fight in the street and then in an attempted robbery. A hypothesis finally ruled out, the mobile phone and the wallet of the victim having been found on him.
