Military Madness > Gaza's Temporary Pier - Quarter Billion Dollar Waste of Money; Half a Billion Dollars for Ukraine to kill 15 civilians; 30 F-16s from Belgium to Ukraine - but not this year, and maybe not next

US aid mission in Gaza more disastrous than acknowledged – investigation

A watchdog has reported dozens of injuries, millions in equipment losses and minimal results
US aid mission in Gaza more disastrous than acknowledged – investigation

The US military’s humanitarian pier mission in Gaza last year resulted in far more injuries, damage, and operational failure than previously publicly acknowledged, an investigation has found.

The mission, formally known as Operation Neptune Solace, was launched under the administration of former President Joe Biden in 2024 after the US failed to persuade Israel to expand overland access for humanitarian deliveries. The US military constructed a temporary offshore pier and floating causeway to transfer aid from ships to the Gaza shoreline without entering Israeli or Gazan ports.

The Pentagon had since acknowledged that the mission encountered certain challenges, such as rough weather conditions, which caused damage to the pier but did not disclose the full scope of the problems.

Did they not know the weather would be rough? My counterpart in Israel could have told them what to expect.

According to the Department of Defense Inspector General’s report, which was published last week, the mission caused 62 injuries among personnel, including the death of Army Sergeant Quandarius Stanley, who was critically injured aboard a Navy vessel in May 2024 and died five months later.

“The Army and Navy did not meet Service-level standards for equipment and unit readiness for their watercraft units,” the report stated, adding that neither service organized, trained, and equipped their forces to meet common joint standards. It also faulted the Transportation Command for shortcomings in logistics planning and exercises.

The report also concluded that the mission cost approximately $230 million and led to $31 million in repair costs after more than two dozen watercraft and equipment pieces were damaged. It further underlined the questionable value of the operation, given that it ran for a total of three months but was actually functional for only about 20 days.

During that time, the US military said it had delivered approximately 20 million pounds of food and supplies via the pier. However, aid groups had stated that Gaza required that amount on a daily basis to avert famine.

$261 million dollars, not counting the cost of the food or shipping, for one-day's worth of food supplies. Has anyone been court-marshalled? Is it time for a 'Black Hawk Down' type of movie?

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated sharply as a result of Israel’s military response to the attack on its territory by Hamas militants in 2023. Israel has been accused of indiscriminate bombings, deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure, and obstruction of humanitarian aid, which have reportedly led to the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians. The imposed blockade has led to severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and other essential resources, according to international organizations.

The 'indiscriminate bombings' referred to here are a result of Hamas hiding themselves among civilians, in schools, hospitals, ambulances, etc., etc.

No mention here of the thousands of tons of food and medical aid that was stolen by Hamas and other criminal gangs to be used by Hamas or sold on the black market.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly criticized both the US and Israeli governments for failing to unblock overland aid deliveries to Gaza and dismissed Washington’s efforts to open alternative routes as politically motivated.

But they have not complained about Hamas stealing food and medication, or hiding among civilians and children, or not just laying down their weapons and leaving Gaza the way they came.

Over 500 Ukrainian drones shot down in one day – Russia

The large-scale aerial attack also included HIMARS rockets and Neptune guided missiles
Over 500 Ukrainian drones shot down in one day – Russia

Russian anti-aircraft defenses have repelled a large-scale Ukrainian attack, downing two Western-supplied HIMARS rockets and over 500 drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday. Five long-range Neptune guided missiles and six JDAM precision-guided aerial bombs were also destroyed.

Aerial assaults have increased in the lead-up to a ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is scheduled to take effect from midnight on May 7–8 through midnight on May 10–11.

Intended as a humanitarian gesture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, the three-day pause also opens the door to potential “direct negotiations with Kiev without preconditions,” Moscow said.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Wednesday that Russia still plans to offer the 3-day ceasefire.

By ramping up drone strikes on Russia, “the Kiev regime continues to demonstrate its essence, its inclination to terrorist actions,” Peskov said.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has declined to support the proposed ceasefire, calling it a Russian “attempt at manipulation.” According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s war crimes investigator Rodion Miroshnik, the past week saw a record number of civilian casualties from drone attacks, with 15 people killed and 142 others injured.

500+ drones and missiles killed 15 civilians, and at what cost?  The 13 missiles mentioned would have cost tens of thousands of dollars each, while the drones might be available for as little as $500. That's a quarter of a billion dollars just for the drones, and probably a similar sum for the missiles. Are 15 civilians worth half a billion dollars? Isn't there something useful that money could have been used for?

EU nation backtracks on Ukraine F-16s promise

Kiev will only receive the jets once Belgium gets F-35s from the US, Brussels’ defense minister has said
EU nation backtracks on Ukraine F-16s promise

Belgium will only be able to deliver F-16s to Ukraine “in the years to come,” Defense Minister Theo Francken has said, after his country initially promised to provide Kiev with jets last year. Brussels must first receive its own delivery of F-35s from the US, Francken stated.

Belgium – along with fellow NATO members Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway – pledged in 2023 to arm Kiev with up to 80 F-16s after receiving permission to do so from the administration of then-US President Joe Biden. Last year, Ukraine received about 20 of the aircraft from Denmark and the Netherlands.

Speaking at an event organized by the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington on Tuesday, Francken claimed Belgium was Kiev’s “biggest supporter on the air domain,” despite his country not yet providing Ukraine with any planes.

Brussels is “delivering 30 working F-16s [to Ukraine] in the years to come, as soon as possible,” he added.

Francken explained the delay by saying that “when we have our F-35s [from the US], we will give the F-16s because we have DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging) capacity in Belgium.”

He insisted that Belgium is “very forward leaning” towards Kiev and “will support [Vladimir] Zelensky and every Ukrainian because it is very important.”

Last month, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said the country will send two non-operational F-16s to Ukraine to be used for spare parts by the end of 2025.

De Wever also announced that Brussels will provide €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in military support to Kiev annually. According to Francken, the package “will pass the government within a few weeks.”

Last week, the US approved a $310.5 million deal to sustain Ukrainian-operated F-16s, which includes training, spare parts, aircraft modifications, logistics assistance, and software support for the fourth-generation aircraft.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow reported in April that Russian air defenses had shot down an F-16, making it the second confirmed loss of a US-designed jet operated by Ukraine.

The Ukrainian authorities initially claimed that F-16s would be a game-changer in the conflict with Russia. However, their use in combat has been limited, with the aircraft mainly being deployed away from the contact line for air defense purposes.

Inexperienced F-16 pilots are probably more dangerous to themselves than they are to their enemies. This is just another way to kill Ukrainians while selling kazillions of dollars worth of F-35s to Belgium.

Are Europeans really so stupid that they can't see what is going on here?

American Politics - DOGE > $1 trillion in spending waste - Rand Paul; Speaker vows to dismantle Deep State, but does he know the real Deep State?

Ice-skating drag queens and Ukrainian influencers included in $1trn US ‘waste list’

Senator Rand Paul hopes the incoming DOGE team will address the spending problem he highlighted in an annual report
Ice-skating drag queens and Ukrainian influencers included in $1trn US ‘waste list’

Over $1 trillion in US taxpayer money has been frittered away on unnecessary, crazy, and outright repulsive projects, Senator Rand Paul believes. The libertarian-leaning lawmaker has urged the future administration of President-elect Donald Trump to tackle the problem.

On Monday, Paul published his tenth annual ‘Festivus Report’, which outlined what he considers frivolous government spending. The senator advocates small government, since he believes that giving bureaucrats more funds inevitably increases inefficiency.

”This year, I am highlighting a whopping $1,008,313,329,626.12. That’s over $1 trillion in government waste, including things like ice-skating drag queens, a $12 Million Las Vegas pickleball complex, $4,840,082 on Ukrainian influencers, and more!” Paul said in the 40-page document.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded the Bearded Ladies Cabaret a $10,000 grant for its Beards on Ice performance, featuring “polar bears, drag queens, and a character dubbed ‘Nonbinary Parental Guardian Nature’,” according to the report.

The State Department spent $4.8 million on “KYIV, Ukraine public affairs – Influencer Staff” on top of “nearly $174 billion in aid and military assistance” from American taxpayers for Ukraine’s fight against Russia. Paul remarked: “Apparently, what we really need in a war zone are more Instagram stories and TikTok dances.”

The senator seems particularly miffed by $1,513,299 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has spent since 2019 on a study of motion sickness. It involved researchers removing parts of kittens’ brains, strapping them to hydraulic tables and rocking them 360 degrees. Paul considers the experiment an unjustifiable form of animal cruelty, he said in interviews.

Curbing government waste was one of Trump’s major promises on the campaign trail. Billionaires Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have been tapped to co-chair a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the incoming administration. Paul said he is counting on the team to help address the problem, but ultimately US lawmakers are the ones who must act.

”Why is there more waste? Because idiots in the Congress keep giving them more money,” he told Fox News when discussing his report.

Musk, an avid social media user, has shared several posts about Paul’s new report on his X account.

Last week, the DOGE account on the same platform released a short list of questionable government projects, such as toilets scanning people’s “anal prints” and a grant to Harvard University to study the effect of leaf blowers on lizards in trees.

US House speaker vows to dismantle ‘deep state’

Mike Johnson has unveiled plans to reform taxes, borders and regulations in 2025
US House speaker vows to dismantle ‘deep state’

US House Speaker Mike Johnson has vowed to dismantle the “deep state” as part of sweeping reforms to be enacted in 2025, pledging to prioritize tax cuts, border security and deregulation.

In an appearance on Fox News, Johnson, who was re-elected as speaker of the House in November 2024, emphasized that Republicans are prepared to act quickly on their agenda in the new Congress.

“We’ve made a lot of campaign promises. And we’re going to be dismantling the deep state all along the way,” he said in the interview on the show Sunday Morning Futures.

Central to the Republican plan is the prevention of what Johnson described as the “largest tax increase in US history,” set to occur if the 2017 tax cuts are not extended by the end of the year.

He promised to revive the economy by extending those cuts, eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits and tips, and increasing the cap on state and local tax deductions. The legislative package also focuses on boosting US manufacturing and reducing federal regulations.

“We are going to incentivize American companies to manufacture in the US again, and we are going to make sure that the regulatory burden and the red tape that has smothered our free market is reduced and eliminated,” Johnson said on Sunday.

To pass these reforms, Johnson plans to use budget reconciliation, a legislative mechanism allowing bills to pass the Senate with a simple majority. He expects the package to be enacted within the first 100 days of the next Republican administration.

The agenda also includes strict immigration policies aimed at enhancing border security. Johnson has expressed support for completing the US-Mexico border wall and increasing enforcement measures.

Johnson’s re-election as speaker was widely viewed as a significant victory for conservatives. He has pledged to align closely with President-elect Donald Trump, who has similarly promised to dismantle the “deep state.”

The term often refers to entrenched federal employees and bureaucracies some conservatives believe obstruct Republican policies.

The term refers to much more than some federal employees and bureaucracies. They are just the tip of the iceberg. It's who owns those people and bureaucracies who make up the real Deep State.

Corruption is Everywhere > ArriveCan a $54 Million Waste?; Ukraine Declares War on Corruption - Would you believe?

..

ArriveCan a $54 Million Liberal Waste?

Did someone in the Liberal government decide to see how many of his friends he can turn into millionaires overnight, for doing nothing? I have read that the original ArriveCan app could have been built for $200,000 instead of the $54 million it cost.

The Real Andy Lee Show
@RealAndyLeeShow
Imagine my shock at discovering that two fellows sitting in a house in Ottawa who received tens of millions from the federal government had to contract out their work to contractors who contracted that out to find someone who could actually do the job.

Who could have guessed?

Resignations rock Ukraine government amid corruption crackdown

War with Russia will be child's play in comparison with war on the oligarchs of one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky embarked on a reshuffle of his administration on Tuesday after the government was rocked by a corruption scandal that saw his deputy head of office and at least 10 other officials quit.

The most senior official to go was Kyrylo Tymoshenko, who oversaw regional policy and worked on Zelensky's election campaign. He was followed by six deputy ministers and five regional governors, a liaison for Zelensky's cabinet informed parliament.

Tymoshenko, who was the subject of stories in the Ukrainian press alleging he led a lavish lifestyle that included access to luxury sports cars, denied any wrongdoing.

In the 11 months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Tymoshenko became the unofficial face of the Ukrainian war effort, appearing on television frequently in the role of spokesman.

Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov quit after allegations emerged that he had presided over purchase of food for the military at inflated prices. The defense department said it was a "technical mistake" and that no money had changed hands.

Shapovalov quit after a Ukrainian news website published an investigation into the matter on Monday.

His boss, Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, sought to play down the news, alleging there had been a mixup due to a technical error by the procurement contractor.

An investigation was opened by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.

Do these people have a suicide pact?

In his nightly address Monday, Zelensky said he had ''already made personnel decisions -- some today, some tomorrow -- regarding officials of various levels in ministries and other central government bodies, in the regions and in the law enforcement system."

He also announced an immediate ban on officials traveling abroad in which he warned that government servants who did not adhere to the rules would be fired.

''It applies to law enforcers, people's deputies, prosecutors and all those who are supposed to work for the state and in the state,'' Zelensky said.

''If they want to rest now, they will rest outside the civil service. Officials will no longer be able to travel abroad for vacation or for any other non-governmental purpose.''

Ukrainian men of military-age men are banned by law from traveling outside the country without special permission.

Other resignations included Deputy Prosecutor General Oleskiy Symonenko; Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories Ivan Lukeryu; Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories Vyacheslav Negoda; and Deputy Minister for Social Policy Vitaliy Muzychenk.

The regional governors of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Sumy and Kherson also quit their posts.

The resignations come just one week after Oleksiy Arestovych, another top Zelenskyy adviser, quit for falsely stating on national television that Ukrainian forces had shot down a rocket that then struck a Dnipro apartment building on Jan. 14, killing 46 civilians.

Why would he possibly say that if it were not true? It is definitely not part of the anti-Russian narrative.

A Russian teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison after planning to blow up a local headquarters of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), and first practicing on a video game.

According to the Investigative Committee, 16-year-old student Nikita Uvarov planned to destroy the building on Minecraft, a popular world-building game, and then replicate the measure in real life. Uvarov, who comes from the small Siberian town of Kansk, was sentenced on Thursday morning, and was also told to pay a 30,000 ruble ($400) fine.

The investigators said that the teenager and two of his friends had been learning how to manufacture explosives since 2019, and had practiced throwing Molotov cocktails on abandoned land in Kansk. It was also alleged that they studied extremist literature and watched videos with instructions for making explosives, and successfully made four bombs.

The Eastern District Military Court found Uvarov guilty of charges of terrorism, namely, undergoing training to carry out criminal activity, his lawyer Pavel Chikov announced.

Chikov heads Agora, an organization that represents those who may be victims of suspected human rights abuses by the authorities. The group is classified in Russia as a ‘foreign agent’ due to receiving funding from abroad.

According to the investigators, Uvarov and two other males used the video game to construct the buildings of the Kansk police department and the city’s FSB division, and plotted to virtually blow them up. Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that the teenagers used the gaming world to demonstrate how a real explosion of the buildings would take place.

While being taken into custody following the court decision, Uvarov cried, “I'm a child, I’m not a terrorist,” it was reported. His co-defendants were exempted from criminal liability for “facilitating the investigation.”

Uvarov was first detained back in 2020 along with two school friends, Denis Mikhaylenko and Bogdan Andreev, for crimes committed in their hometown of Kansk, including flyer distribution and the use of fireworks.

Specifically, the trio was arrested for distributing posters backing the release of self-described anarchist and mathematician Azat Miftakhov, one of which appeared on the local FSB building. Miftakhov was arrested in 2019 for allegedly attacking the Moscow offices of the ruling political party United Russia.

After the schoolboys’ detention, law enforcement officers were able to gain access to their online communications and found details of how they would construct virtual buildings. Authorities also uncovered criticisms of the FSB and discussions about anarchism and pyrotechnics. This is also where investigators found plans to blow up buildings in the Minecraft computer game, the Baza Telegram channel reported.

Preschool shuts down after forcing toddlers to wear ‘blackface’ masks

A peculiar classroom activity meant to celebrate Black History Month

triggered outrage among parents

A Massachusetts preschool is closing its doors indefinitely after a class assignment saw children don a form of ‘blackface’ to mark Black History Month, with the facility issuing a lengthy apology to irate parents amid the controversy.

In a statement shared online late last week, the ICKids preschool in Newtown, Massachusetts said a teacher at the school had “carried out an activity that involved black mask/black face,” and that a parent later complained that the assignment was “offensive.”

While the school noted that the staffer in question was fired over the incident, it added, somewhat cryptically, “Considering of protests [sic] happening at the center that will put the children at risk… we are closing the ICKids daycare at this time.”

The preschool did not elaborate on what the controversial ‘blackface’ activity entailed, however, a Facebook post by a self-described relative of a student there shared a photo taken in the classroom, in which children are seen with what appear to be paper plates with black faces painted on them. One little girl is seen holding a plate to her face as a mask.

“My cousin sent me a picture of… her child’s daycare in the town of Newton, Ma. This is how they decided to celebrate Black history month, by having the students make Black Face,” the family member wrote alongside the photo.

Nadirah Pierce, the mother of a student at the Newton school, told a local NBC affiliate the assignment was “unacceptable,” adding “I don’t really understand the concept of this project.”

It's very likely that the staffer didn't understand the concept either. Much like Justin Trudeau when he was an elementary school teacher.

The mother was also critical of the school’s initial apology, which stated: “To all who are offended, we sincerely apologize for what happened with one of our classroom activities: blackface.

“Unfortunately we didn’t do enough research on black history and carried out a wrong activity. We are sorry about it and we mean it!” the original statement went on. Pierce described that missive as “empty,” and said the lengthier mea culpa posted to Facebook was still “disheartening.”

However, while the Newton school said it would be shutting down for an unspecified period of time, it did suggest it could someday resume operations, stating “In the event that we reopen our doors all staff will be trained in Diversity” and that “multicultural issues in child care and other mandated professional development will be done continuously through the year.”

I have to agree with him...

Billionaire compares crypto to ‘venereal disease’

Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger wants virtual currency banned

Charlie Munger, the longtime business partner of Warren Buffett, has ripped cryptocurrencies, likening them to a sexually transmitted disease. In a comment that went viral, the veteran investor also called for virtual currencies to be banned.

“I certainly didn’t invest in crypto. I’m proud of the fact I’ve avoided it. It’s like a venereal disease or something. I just regard it as beneath contempt,” Munger said at a shareholder’s Q&A session at the annual meeting for LA-based newspaper company, Daily Journal Corp, where he serves as chairman.

The 98-year-old billionaire investor added that he “admire[s] the Chinese for banning it.”

The news, first reported by Bloomberg, comes months after Berkshire Hathaway bought $1 billion worth of stock in a digital bank that focuses on crypto. The SEC filing submitted earlier this week confirmed the holding’s crypto investments into Nubank, a digital bank based in Brazil.

Last December, Nubank raised $2.6 billion in its New York IPO, valuing the fintech firm at over $40 billion.

Munger and Buffett have been long-standing critics of cryptocurrencies. Buffett has previously derided Bitcoin for being an asset that “does not create anything,” calling it “rat poison” and saying that crypto is nothing more than a “delusion that attracts charlatans.”

Exactly! And blockchain is a horrendous waste of power that could be used for something useful.
