The name Muhammad topped the list of most popular baby names for boys in Alberta last year, when all its spelling variations were counted. The name beat out names like Noah, Theodore and Oliver.

According to data released by the Government of Alberta, Muhammad was the most popular baby boy name in 2025, with 270 boys born with the name. Common spellings include Muhammed, Muhamad, Mohammad, Mohammed, Mahammad, Maxamed, Mehemmed, Mehemmet, Mohamad and Mohamed.

The next most common boys names were Noah (259), Theodore (204), Oliver (184), Henry (180), Jack and Lucas (tied at 153), Levi (152), Liam (145), James (125), William (123), and Benjamin and Bennett (tied at 122).

Muhammad was also the most popular name in the City of Toronto last year, and in 2024, moving up from fourth place in 2023.

For girls, the most popular names in Alberta last year were Olivia, Amelia, Emma and Sophia (tied), Charlotte, Violet, Isla, Ellie and Nora (tied), Eliana, Chloe, Evelyn and Lily (tied), and Aurora.

Isn't it odd that there are no obviously Muslim names among the girls being born? Names like: Aisha ("prosperous"), Maryam ("beloved/mother of Prophet Isa"), Fatima ("daughter of the Prophet"), Zahra ("radiant"), and Aaliyah ("exalted"). Other frequently chosen names include Zainab, Inaya, Amina, Layla, and Zara.

None of those names appear near the top of the list. I wonder why?
