Incarcerated in solitary confinement at Laon prison (Aisne), Ali Riza Polat, 39, is suspected of having attacked two prison guards early this Tuesday morning with two shards of glass while shouting “Allahu akbar” (God is great). These officials had just entered his cell when the inmate rushed at them. One of them was slightly injured in the forearm while the second was taken hostage by the madman. After negotiations, Ali Riza Polat finally released his grip, laid down his homemade weapons and surrendered.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has taken up the investigation opened for “attempted assassination on persons holding public authority in relation to a terrorist enterprise and in a state of legal recidivism”. The investigations were entrusted to the anti-terrorist sub-directorate (SDAT), coordinating service, to the zonal directorate of the national police (DZPN) of Lille and to the General Directorate of Internal Security. The hearing of the suspect, who was placed in police custody this afternoon, should shed light on the motivations for his action.
“I never woke up one morning to destroy the lives of these people (…) I am not Coulibaly. (…) I am innocent of the facts with which I am accused,” declared Ali Riza Polat, born in Turkey and arrived in France at the age of three, during his last trial. Accused of having provided a bag of weapons to Amedy Coulibaly, containing Kalashnikovs and Tokarev pistols, the thirty-year-old had always denied knowing the use that would be made of this arsenal, imagining a robbery.
Born into a family of Alevis, a non-practicing branch of Islam, Ali Riza Polat explained that he converted in 2014. But he had always refuted any extremist practice of his religion and any adherence to terrorist theories. “I am Muslim, I am a believer. I say my five daily prayers, but I do my stupid things on the side (…) I never said that I was in the religious fight. I have no hatred against anyone.”
But his statements did not convince the anti-terrorist justice system. “For the court, there is no doubt (…) that Ali Riza Polat was indeed guilty, (…) with full knowledge of the facts, of complicity in the acts of terrorism committed in a concerted manner by the Kouachi and Amedy brothers Coulibaly, by providing the latter with permanent assistance in the preparation of his acts and in gathering the means to commit them,” motivated the judges. Contacted, the lawyers of Ali Riza Polat, Mes Moad Nefati and Rachid Madid, did not wish to speak at this stage.
At this stage, we do not know whether the attack committed by Ali Riza Polat is linked to his current conditions of detention, which he is experiencing rather poorly. The person concerned, who requested to change prison, has been placed in solitary confinement since February 2021, except for the parenthesis (October 2021 – January 2022) during his stay in Vendin-le-Vieil for an evaluation in the evaluation unit of radicalization. Rioting in Leeds saw a double-decker bus set on fire, a police car overturned, rocks thrown and residents told to stay indoors as police flooded the area.
Footage taken in the aftermath of the violence in the Harehills area of the city showed the charred wreckage of vehicles.
Police remained at the scene on Friday after the previous night’s trouble that has been condemned by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
There were no injuries reported in the unrest, which police believe was “instigated by a criminal minority intent on disrupting community relations”….
Trouble flared after officers were called to an incident at an address in Luxor Street at 5pm on Thursday where they found an “ongoing disturbance” involving agency workers and children, West Yorkshire Police said.
Crowds began to gather and a decision was taken to remove both the staff and youngsters “to a safe place”.
Islamic hysteria
The owner of a restaurant in Harehills said the disorder was linked to local children being taken into care, adding some people responded by setting fires and “throwing stones”.
Riesa, a pharmacy dispenser who did not want to give her last name, witnessed “quite violent” scenes.
The 26-year-old, who lives off Harehills Lane, said: “They were attacking police cars, throwing things at the police cars – anything they could pick up off the floor really. Rocks from the garden, rubbish, drinks, anything.”
She added: “My husband said that they were pulling bins from people’s businesses or houses and just putting them into the middle of the road full of rubbish and just setting it on fire.”…
Police have said they would conduct a full investigation into “all criminal offences… including damage to vehicles from fire” and assured the public those involved would be held accountable.
“We want to make it very clear that the full weight of the law will be brought against those responsible,” the force added.

French police arrested a man today on terrorism charges who is accused of trying to murder a taxi driver with a knife while expressing support for the Hamas terror group, a source at the terrorism prosecutor’s office says.
France is on its highest state of security as it gears up to host millions of visitors, athletes and world leaders during the Paris Olympic Summer Games, kicking off on July 26.
The man, already known by authorities as someone who had been radicalized, stopped a taxi on Tuesday night while brandishing a gun in the city of Le Mans, and asked to be taken to an isolated area near Ferte-Bernard. He then forced the driver out of the car, bound him and attacked his neck with the blade, the source says….
