The Azerbaijani Armed Forces have launched a manhunt for a border guard sergeant who killed three military staff members at a border outpost before fleeing the military base on Sunday.

The reasons for the incident remain unclear since the suspect is still on the run, the military said in a statement.

The man, identified by the Azerbaijani border guard as Sergeant Elkhan Avazly, opened fire on his fellow servicemen “for no apparent reason” and killed a first lieutenant and two noncommissioned officers, who were at that time at a border outpost, the military said. The suspect then dropped his weapon and fled.

The Azerbaijani Military Prosecutor’s Office has launched a probe into the incident. According to the military, Avazly chose to remain on duty after completing his compulsory military service.

Sudan PM resigns amid protests marred by deadly violence

Sudanese PM Abdalla Hamdok announced his resignation, suggesting “another man or woman” should lead the country through a transition to civilian rule just over a month after he struck a power-sharing deal with the military.

"I decided to give back the responsibility and announce my resignation as prime minister, and give a chance to another man or woman of this noble country to ... help it pass through what’s left of the transitional period to a civilian democratic country," the outgoing Prime Minister said in his farewell address on Sunday.

The resignation comes amid a wave of anti-military protests that have been rocking Sudan for months. On Sunday, medics tied to pro-democracy activists claimed that two protesters were killed by the Sudanese security forces in the country's most populated city, Omdurman. It has been alleged that dozens have been killed since the unrest erupted following the latest military coup in October that ousted Hamdok.

The putschists led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, however, soon struck a power-sharing agreement with Hamdok, reinstating him to the government. Hamdok was supposed to function as a technocratic head of the interim authority until the elections set for July 2023 are held, while the general self-appointed himself to lead the military-controlled Transitional Sovereignty Council. Al-Burhan vowed to refrain from running for a political office in 2023.

The power-sharing arrangement did not sit well with many pro-democracy activists, who took to streets protesting against both the military and Hamdok’s decision to ink a deal with the coup leaders.

Sudan has been in a state of political crisis since April 2019, when the military ousted  long-ruling president Omar al-Bashir from power.

Another Senior Jewish Women Robbed and Beaten in Her Paris Apartment

Yet another elderly French Jewish woman living alone in her own home has been subjected to a brutal robbery motivated by antisemitism, the Paris-based National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism (BNVCA) said on Sunday.

The attack occurred on Dec. 13, according to a statement from the BNVCA, an independent organization that assists the victims of antisemitic violence in France.

Two minors, described as black and of about 16-17 years of age, rang the doorbell of their victim’s apartment, pretending to be members of the building’s security detail. When the victim — identified as “Mrs. LU”, a 74-year-old pensioner — answered the door, the two assailants forced their way inside.

They then subjected their victim to a series of heavy blows before tying her up and ordering her to disclose where she kept her jewelry. Over the next traumatic half-hour, one of the assailants searched the apartment while the other kept guard over the victim, hitting her repeatedly and placing a piece of masking tape over her mouth to stifle her cries.

After having stolen all of their victim’s jewelry, the two assailants fled, leaving her badly bruised on the face and legs and in a state of severe shock.

The BNVCA said that the victim’s Jewish identity was revealed to the assailants by the mezuzah affixed to the doorpost of her apartment in the 19th arrondissement of Paris.

“In the same way that a Jew is identified as such by wearing a kippah, the apartments inhabited by Jewish families are identified by the presence of the mezuzah (a case containing a parchment written in Hebrew),” the group noted.

The BNVCA said that the victim, who had lived in the building for 30 years, was now anxious to move. The previous week, a Jewish family living in a neighboring street had been subjected to a similar antisemitic robbery, the group added.

“We call on the police to do everything possible to identify the two attackers and to carry out patrols in order to protect the residents of this neighborhood, which has become dangerous and infamous,” the BNVCA statement concluded.

Last month, a 70-year-old Parisian Jewish man was beaten, robbed and tied to a chair in his own apartment by antisemitic intruders who are yet to be apprehended by police.

There have been several instances of vulnerable Jews in France being targeted for home invasions and robberies in recent years, resulting in at least two deaths. In 2017, Sarah Halimi, a 65-year-old pensioner, was beaten and and her body ejected from a third floor window by an antisemitic intruder, while in 2018, Mireille Knoll, an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor, was stabbed 11 times in her apartment before her body was set alight during another robbery motivated by antisemitism.

If the Jews all abandon France, as it appears they are slowly doing, the country may also be abandoned by God to the consequences of its failure to protect God's people. That will not be a good day for France.
