The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord
Zephaniah 1:14-2:3
That great and terrible day is near.
Swiftly it comes—a day of bitter tears,
A day when even strong men cry out.
A day when the Lord’s anger is poured out,
A day of terrible anguish and distress,
A day of black clouds and darkness.
A day of desolation and ruin,
A day of wailing and gloom,
A day of trumpet calls and battle cries.
The walled city falls, the warrior dies.
Because you have sinned against the Lord,
I will make you grope around like the blind.
Into the dust Your blood will be poured,
And your bodies lie rotting on the ground.
Your silver and gold will not save you
On the day of the Lord’s wrath.
For everything will be devoured
In His jealous fire’s path.
He will make a terrifying end
Of all the people on earth.
Gather together you shameless nation.
Gather before judgment calls,
Before your time to repent has flown,
Now, before His fury falls.
Seek the Lord, all who are meek,
And follow his commands.
To do what is right and humble do seek—
Seek it while you can.
Perhaps even yet the Lord will hide you—
Hide you on His angry day.
Perhaps even yet the Lord will hide you
Perhaps He’ll make a way.
