Bits and bites from Around the World > Thousands gather in Dublin for fake parade

AI hoax causes thousands to show up in Dublin,

Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Thousands of people, deceived by an AI-generated Pakistan-based website that quickly spread online, lined the streets of Dublin, Ireland, for a Halloween parade that didn't exist.

The website My Spirit Halloween falsely promoted a Macnas Halloween Parade, leading large swaths of people to gather on the streets.

Macnas is a performing arts group that had staged Halloween parades in Dublin since 2013. The COVID-19 pandemic stopped those parades until last year, but the group had not scheduled one in 2024.

Initial crowds were in the hundreds and appeared to swell into thousands.

"It seems to be an online scam. It's really sad to see that people are being scammed. Everyone is trying to have a fun and safe Halloween. Having a parade to go to sounded really good," Sinn Fein councillor Janice Boylan said.

"I know an awful lot of people turned up. It's a terrible pity that there is people out there that are trying to scam people."

The thousands who showed up waited for about an hour before it dawned on them there was no parade.

They gathered on O'Connell Street near Parnell Street in Dublin's city center. The hoax claimed the parade would start there and end at Christchurch Cathedral.

As they began trying to clear the streets, the Irish police force known as Gardai put out a statement that said, "Please be advised that contrary to information being circulated online, no Halloween parade is scheduled to take place in Dublin city center this evening or tonight."

The festival of Diwali was happening in Dublin as the fake parade crowd showed up.

The website that touted the fake parade appeared to have removed the listing Friday morning.

The Islamization of Europe > Migrant drug gangs clash involves hundreds in France

A teenager and four others have been seriously wounded in a shootout in the city of Poitiers in western France, which erupted into a fight involving "several hundred people", Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said Friday. The violence is thought to be linked to drug trafficking.

A gangland shootout set off a clash involving hundreds in the city of Poitiers overnight, leaving five people injured, French officials said on Friday, highlighting the challenges faced by the new government in tackling violent crime.

Many French cities are plagued by drug gangs who often operate in the low-income, high-rise housing estates on the outskirts of the historic city centres.

And while they hint at it later in this article, they don't come out and say that it is almost always migrant gangs.

Violence broke out in the Couronneries neighbourhood, local authorities said on X.

"It started off with a shooting at a restaurant. It ended up with a clash between rival gangs which involved several hundred people," French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told BFM TV, who added it was linked to rival drug gangs.

Extra police forces will be sent to the area later on Friday, added the local authority for the region.

Retailleau has vowed tougher action against drug gangs and illegal immigration, as the new government led by centre-right Prime Minister Michel Barnier aims to shore up its support in France.

Concerns over violent crime have been cited as one of the reasons behind voters choosing Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) party, which says it will do more than other parties to tackle crime and illegal immigration.

President Emmanuel Macron's decision to hold snap parliamentary elections in June and July resulted in a hung parliament, in which no party won an outright majority although Le Pen's party has one of the biggest blocs in parliament.
