Elon Musk > Champion of Truth and Free Speech

Elon Musk’s X to pay legal bills for Brampton, Ont.,

doctor chastised over COVID-19 tweets

Elon Musk’s X said it’s funding legal bills for a Canadian doctor previously chastised by regulators for her tweets about COVID-19.

In a post to the X News account on Sunday morning, the company formerly known as Twitter wrote that it’s “proud to defend” Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against what it calls “government-supported efforts to cancel her speech.

In 2021, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario cautioned the Brampton, Ont.-based pediatrics specialist over her tweets, including one saying vaccination for COVID-19 was unnecessary.

The doctor has an ongoing crowdfunding campaign asking for $300,000 to help pay for legal costs, including a cost order related to a lawsuit she launched against what she called a “malicious online smear campaign.”

Gill issued an X post saying Musk committed to paying the remainder of her crowdfunding campaign and helping her appeal the College’s cautions from 2021.

Gill tagged Musk in a post asking him for help earlier this week, saying she owed around $300,000 in costs that were due in four days.

Publicly available legal filings show that Gill previously launched a lawsuit against 23 defendants. The claim was dismissed, awarding costs to the defendants totalling more than $1.1 million.

Gill appealed the dismissal, though only regarding her claim against four of the defendants, and sought leave to appeal the related costs orders. The appeal was dismissed, and she was refused leave to appeal the costs orders.

Last August, Musk posted on X promising to fund the legal bills of anyone who was “unfairly treated” by their employers “due to posting or liking something on this platform.”

“No limit,” he wrote.

It’s been almost a year and a half since Musk bought Twitter for US$44 billion, taking the formerly publicly traded company private.

He has since renamed the platform X and made sweeping changes, including dismantling its verification system, and getting rid of the majority of the workforce including engineers and moderators.

Experts have raised concern about the amount of misinformation being posted and algorithmically promoted on X, including about topics like the Israel-Hamas war.

Experts, of course, consider anything resembling the truth to be misinformation if it counters the prevailing narrative of the far-left, or Deep State. Elon Musk is a hero! A powerful man with a conscience. A rare breed!

Truth Never gets in the way of a good story for Palestinian Pseudo-Journalist

..

Mohammed Najib,‘Journalist’

The biography of Mohammed Najib says he “a journalist, war correspondent and defense analyst based in Ramallah, Palestine. He reports and writes on the Middle East region for leading newspapers and journals like The Jerusalem Post, Yomiuri Shimbon, Le Monde, Special Operations Report, the Wall Street Journal and Jane’s Information Group.”

Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? But just one of his articles could have been reprinted in all those “leading newspapers,” and Najib may now be using those multiple appearances of the same article to convince us that he’s a real journalist. What he doesn’t say is that almost all of his pieces appear not in the Western press, but almost exclusively — do an Internet search of his name for the evidence — in Arab, especially Palestinian Arab, newspapers, including Arab News, Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, and others of that Saudi or Palestinian ilk.

He is a Palestinian based in Ramallah.

Judging from this article in the Saudi-based Arab News, he has no business pretending to be any kind of journalist. The article is filled with absolute lies and Palestinian propaganda.

Palestinians are outraged by the Israeli government’s move to hold a weekly Cabinet meeting on May 21 inside the tunnels it has dug under Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israel has not dug a single tunnel underneath the Temple Mount or under the mosque. All the tunnels that archaeologists have uncovered and excavated are adjacent to the Mount, or stretch hundreds of meters away from it.

The Israelis have to date excavated approximately 2,000 archeological sites in Jerusalem alone. But they have never dug a. tunnel, despite Najib’s malign claim, under the Temple Mount; the tunnels they have dug in the vicinity have been located either next to the Mount, or extend for hundreds of meters away from the Mount. It’s no secret; the Israeli archeological digs are not hidden from view, and Mohammed Najib surely has visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and knows about the Marwani Mosque built beneath it. He knows perfectly well that there are no Israeli tunnels underneath Al-Aqsa.

Najib claims:

For decades, Israel has been excavating under Al-Aqsa as part of a vague, historically motivated search for “Solomon’s Temple” in an attempt to justify the occupation through archeology.

Israel doesn’t need to excavate under the Mount to find evidence of the First and Second Temples. Israeli archeologists have discovered every sort of Jewish artifact – oil lamps, utensils, knives, plates, coins, pottery, menorahs – from both the First and Second Temple periods, in the hundreds of tons of debris dug up when the Palestinians excavated under the Mount in order to build a new mosque, the Marwani Mosque, under Al-Aqsa. The Palestinians threw out that debris, wanting to get rid of what they surely suspected contained Jewish artifacts from the Temple periods, but Israeli archeologists rushed to collect that debris, and have spent years sifting through it, finding many hundreds of artifacts. Some of these artifacts are now on display in Israeli museums. Mohammad Najib can hardly be unaware of the Palestinian excavations under Al-Aqsa, or of the debris that the Palestinians threw out and Israeli archeologists then salvaged, as much as they could, for study. And he knows perfectly well that the Israelis have not excavated under the Temple Mount.

Najib continues:

However, after years of digging, Israelis, who claim they can trace their heritage to the land of Palestine, have found nothing linking their history to the Al-Aqsa region.

Elder of Ziyon then notes:

The only people who have excavated  underneath the Temple Mount since the 19th century have been the Muslims of the Waqf.

They dug out hundreds of tons of debris removed to illegally build the huge underground Marwani Mosque at the site of what was (erroneously) called Solomon’s Stables.

It was the biggest archaeological crime of the century.

The Temple Mount Sifting Project has been going through the truckfuls of debris – and found countless Judean artifacts from the times of the First and Second Temples.

One example is this bulla inscribed with the name of a well-known priestly family of First Temple-era Jerusalem, the children of Immer.

They also found the distinctive Herodian tiles from the Second Temple period. So we know Herod built something big there – now what structure could it have possibly been and described in detail by Josephus?…

Yes, a very large structure was built on the Temple Mount during the period of the Second Temple, a building described by the Jewish historian Josephus. What, oh what, could that building have been? Yes, you’ve guessed it. But Najib knows the Second Temple, like the First, never existed; they are part of the fictive history the Jews have made up to justify their presence in Palestine.

Najib insists:

Dozens of far-right Israelis visit the Al-Aqsa compound daily to show defiance and provoke Palestinians.

Elder of Ziyon responds:

No, they (and visitors like me) visit to be at Judaism’s holiest spot – a small fact that Najib doesn’t mention to the readers.

Believe it or not, Mohammed Najib, Israelis of all political persuasions, and not just those who are “far right,” visit the Temple Mount (which Najib misleadingly describes as the “Al-Aqsa compound”) with no desire to “show defiance and provoke” the Palestinians. They do everything they can to avoid disturbing the Muslims. They do not pray on the Mount, openly or silently. They do not bring prayerbooks, prayer shawls, and tefillin onto the Mount. They limit their walk to the same well-worn route along the perimeter of the Temple Mount. They visit only five days of the week, and only for three hours in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. They do not visit the Mount on Fridays, in order to avoid possible conflict with the influx of Muslims who stream into Al-Aqsa for Friday prayers. And Jews from all over the world ascend to the Temple Mount for a simple reason that has apparently escaped Mohammed Najib’s notice: they visit the Temple Mount because it is the holiest site in Judaism.

Najib continues:

In July 2017, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued a decision affirming that Israel has no sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem, which Israel occupied in 1967. It condemned the excavations carried out by the Israeli Antiquities Department in the city….

That UNESCO resolution of 2017, condemning excavations carried out by Israelis in the city that has been the capital of the Jewish people for more than 3000 years, was an outrage. It completely ignored the Jewish connection to the Temple Mount site, which was referred to only by its Muslim name, Haram al-Sharif. The Western Wall was described as the Al-Buraq Wall. And the resolution said nothing about what the Muslim Waqf was doing, carrying out extensive excavations inside the Mount in order to build, deep underground, the Marwani Mosque. And neither then, nor since, has UNESCO condemned the massive excavations undertaken by the Arabs at the Temple Mount, and the destruction of so many Jewish artifacts that were thrown out with the piles of dirt removed in the Marwani excavations.

There are tens of thousands of archeological sites all over Israel. Two thousand of them are in Jerusalem alone. Archeologists, Israeli and non-Israeli, have unearthed thousands of Jewish artifacts dating as far back as 3000 B.C. And then there is the stunning written evidence on ancient parchment of Jews in their land, dating from between the first and third centuries B.C., found in the caves of Qumran – the Dead Sea Scrolls, now on view at the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem. Yet Najib and Ikrima Sabri, a preacher at al-Aqsa Mosque whom Elder of Ziyon also quotes, claim that the Israelis have found no archeological evidence of an ancient Jewish presence on the land. How do Sabri and Muhammed Najib explain the existence of those scrolls, all of them written in Hebrew, save for two written in Greek? The answer is: they don’t. They simply ignore the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other scrolls found later in other Qumran caves, and don’t mention, either, those Jewish artifacts carbon-dated to the First and Second Temple periods.

It is not the Jews, but the Muslims, who have destroyed Jewish (and Christian) antiquities in Jerusalem and in the rest of Israel. The latest example is the disposal of hundreds of tons of earth, rich with archeological evidence, that the Muslims dug out from under the Temple Mount when building the Marwani Mosque. That disposal was a great crime; thousands of artifacts were destroyed in the process.

The only thing the Israelis have had trouble finding is not ancient Jewish artifacts in the Land of Israel, as Ikrima Sabri claims, but enough museum space to display even the tiniest fraction of those ancient artifacts that their archeologists have so carefully unearthed. And the series of lies Mohammad Najib tells, about Jewish tunnels dug under Al-Aqsa — there are none — and his claim that Israelis have “found nothing linking their history to the Al-Aqsa region,” when the Temple Mount debris dug up by the Muslims themselves and rescued for sifting and study by Israeli archeologists turned out to contain a wealth of Jewish artifacts carbon-dated to the periods of both the First and Second Temple, should disqualify him from appearing in the Western press. Should, but won’t, because that Western press has shown itself all too willing to publish the most absurd charges against Israel.

Politics - Canada's World Class Buffoon ambushes Italian PM; Sky News calls him 'the Repugnant, Incompetent Trudeau'

..

Newspaper calls Trudeau a 'buffoon' after lecturing Italian PM

Lecturing, or ambushing?

Author of the article: Postmedia News
Published May 21, 2023  •  1 minute read

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a self-described feminist, is being slammed for his “repugnant” behaviour after trying to “mansplain” democracy to Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

The Saturday front page of the Milan Libero newspaper. Libero
Literally: “This buffoon wants to teach us lessons.”

Meloni seemed none too pleased Friday at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, when Trudeau told her before private, bilateral talks that “Canada is concerned about some of the positions Italy is taking in terms of LGBT rights.” He added that he was looking forward to speaking to her more about the issue and “other democratic principles that the world needs.”

The buffoon would never speak to a man in such a manner, but it seems obvious he feels considerably superior to Meloni. As usual, he is delusional.

The Italian leader fired back Sunday, saying she rejected Trudeau’s criticism and that the Liberal leader had fallen “victim” to “fake news.”

She actually said: “He has fallen victim to fake news” and his assessment doesn’t correspond to “reality”.

Italian media was quick to condemn Trudeau’s latest misstep on the world stage with the Milan-based Libero newspaper splashing a picture of the Grit prime minister on its front page in blackface with the headline, translated from Italian, saying, “This buffoon wants to teach us lessons.”

Even Sky News Australia host Rita Panahi got in on the act, saying Meloni’s grimace while being lectured:

“really sums up what all of us think of the repugnant, incompetent Trudeau.”

Trudeau’s critique on Friday came in response to news that Meloni’s government told Italian city councils to stop officially recording both parents in same-sex couples and instead limit it to the biological parent. The move has sparked protests by gay rights groups.

Gay rights groups live in a magical land of their own.

I would love to see Trudeau being shunned by the other G7 leaders for his unwelcomed, misogynistic behaviour.

I'll bet The Sun is the only major Canadian news outlet that publishes this story.

UPDATE 22 MAY 2023 - CTV News covered this story on their website. CBC and Global seem to have avoided it. In the CTV report which was probably written by Associated Press, Giorgia Meloni is introduced as the Premier of Italy. Although technically correct, in Canada, provincial heads of state are called Premiers while the national head of state is called Prime Minister. Did AP use the term Premier deliberately in order to hint that Trudeau was above Meloni?

CTV also managed to neglect to mention the media outfall from Trudeau's ambush of the woman on camera, something he would never do to a man. He had an opportunity to do so with Indonesia's head of state and sat quietly without saying a word.

European Politics > Russia turning off Euro gas; BoJo bows out; EU Charter now includes Abortion Rights

Germany fears for gas supply as Russia to shut down Nord Stream pipeline

By Sheri Walsh

July 5 (UPI) -- Russia plans to shut down Europe's largest gas pipeline, Nord Stream, for annual maintenance, next week with some in Germany fearing the temporary shut-down could become permanent.

Russian gas company Gazprom, which owns the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, announced maintenance is scheduled to run from July 11 to 22 to "test mechanical and automated systems."

But some in the European Union, which now relies on the Russian pipeline for about 40% of its gas, are not convinced the testing will run according to schedule.

"We cannot rule out the possibility that gas transport will not be resumed afterwards for political reasons," Klaus Mueller, Head of Germany's energy regulator told CNBC.

If supply "doesn't come back after maintenance because President Putin plays games or wants to hit Europe while it hurts, then the plan to fill up gas storage by the end of summer will probably not work," Henning Gloystein, director of energy, climate and resources at Eurasia Group told CNBC.

Germany, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands are all prepared to use coal-fired plants to make up for any new gas shortages. A number of European countries have also been filling underground storage with natural gas supplies to make sure there is enough fuel for the winter.

Last month, Gazprom announced it was cutting its output to Europe because of a maintenance issue, forcing Germany to warn its citizens to conserve.

"The gas flows from the Nord Stream 1 were throttled yesterday to around 40% of the maximum capacity," Germany's Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection said on its website.

German leaders saw the move as an attack on Europe over its rebuke of Russia's war in Ukraine and now worry next week's maintenance could drag on longer.

"Germany has Europe's biggest population, it's the biggest economy, it's the biggest gas consumer, it's the biggest single importer of Russian gas, and it has got nine land borders," Gloystein said. "So, whatever happens in Germany spills into the rest of Europe."

Boris Johnson agrees to resign, will remain PM for now

By Sean Boynton  Global News
Posted July 7, 2022 2:21 pm

Boris Johnson has resigned as Britain’s prime minister, bringing an end to one of the rockiest tenures for a world leader in modern times after a series of scandals rocked his government’s confidence in him.

Bowing to growing pressure as more than 50 ministers quit and lawmakers said he must go, Johnson spoke outside his Downing Street office Thursday to confirm he would resign.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said.

However, he said he will remain as British prime minister while a leadership contest is held to choose his successor. He will remain an MP after he steps down, one of his close aides confirmed on Twitter.

“The process of choosing that new leader should begin now. And today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will until a new leader is in place,” Johnson said.

Among the possible candidates to succeed him include former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

The leader of the opposition Labour party, Keir Starmer, welcomed the news of Johnson’s resignation, but said it should have happened “long ago”.

“He was always unfit for office. He has been responsible for lies, scandal and fraud on an industrial scale,” Starmer said.

Truss, a Conservative MP, also said Johnson was right to step down as prime minister.

“The PM has made the right decision,” she said. “We need calmness and unity now and to keep governing while a new leader is found.”

Fall from grace

Johnson’s exit marks a remarkable fall from grace for the charismatic Conservative leader, who just two-and-a-half years ago was celebrating an overwhelming election victory and the full backing of his party.

He had vowed to move forward as prime minister after narrowly surviving a confidence vote last month that was triggered by shifting stories about COVID-19 lockdown-breaking parties in government offices — some of which he attended.

But that stance proved untenable after two of his most senior cabinet ministers quit Tuesday over similarly shifting explanations about his handling of a sexual misconduct scandal that dogged a recent government appointee.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned within minutes of each other, costing Johnson the support of the men responsible for tackling two of the biggest issues facing Britain — the cost-of-living crisis and surging COVID-19 infections.

Those two were then joined by solicitor general Alex Chalk, who also joined four parliamentary private secretaries, the Conservative Party’s vice-chair and two trade envoys in abandoning Johnson and resigning. Several more ministers and government officials followed that first group out the door Wednesday, further endangering the prime minister.

In their resignation letters, Sunak and Javid both said Johnson’s credibility had been shattered by the growing list of scandals, with Chalk adding that public confidence in the government under its current leadership had “irretrievably broken down.”

European Parliament votes to include abortion rights in EU Charter

July 7 (UPI) -- Members of the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution calling for the right to abortion to be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the legislative body said Thursday.

The resolution was adopted by a vote of 324 MEPs in favor, 155 against with 38 abstentions.

"A proposal should be submitted to the [European] Council to amend Article 7 of the charter, adding that 'everyone has the right to safe and legal abortion,'" the parliament said in a news release.

Parliamentary members expect the EC to meet to discuss a convention to revise the European Union Treaties at a future date.

This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned federal protection of abortion rights, leaving to each state to restrict or ban abortion.

Thursday's resolution by the European Parliament also condemns the U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The parliament said it is urging its members to lobby member states to decriminalize abortion and "to remove and combat the remaining legal, financial, social and practical restrictions still hampering access in some member states."

In June, MEPs adopted a resolution calling for the landmark Roe vs. Wade case to be upheld.

Abortion rights vary widely among EU members, with Malta having the strictest restrictions, not allowing the procedure under any circumstances.

"Today, the [European Parliament] has stood up for all women by sending a strong message that will resonate worldwide," MEP Susana Solís Pérez said in a statement to Politico.

"Safe and legal abortion is a fundamental right and, as such, it should be included in our charter."

Dutch Supreme Court Approves Euthanasia for Dementia Patients Against Their Will

This is the case where a dementia patient changed her mind about being euthanized, but the doctor went ahead and euthanized her anyway. He was acquitted of murder.

(UPI) -- The Netherlands' Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Dutch doctors may euthanize patients with severe dementia if at any time they gave written consent to do so.

Previously, doctors were required by law to have patients reconfirm their wish to be euthanized.

The Dutch court's ruling stemmed from the case of a nursing home doctor who was acquitted of murder in a lower court, for euthanizing a 74-year-old woman in 2016 based on a written directive she gave previously while still lucid.

The woman said she didn't want to be in a nursing home and wanted doctors to euthanize her when it was the "right time."

Public prosecutors charged the doctor, saying there were signs the woman changed her mind and didn't want to die.

"The court was of the opinion that the doctor acted carefully and was therefore not punishable," the high court said Tuesday, adding that "the court made no mistakes in its assessment."

The Dutch legislature passed legislation in 2001 making euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide legal. The law, which took effect the following year, applies to patients at least 12 years old who endure unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement.

There were more than 6,000 cases of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide in 2016, according to the Dutch Regional Euthanasia Review Committees.

Dutch Woman With Dementia Euthanized Against Her Will

The Doctor Was Just Cleared Of Wrongdoing

Lethal injection. - stock photo David Hills/Getty Images
By AMANDA PRESTIGIACOMO
The Daily Wire

Three years ago, a 74-year-old Dutch woman with dementia was euthanized by a doctor who drugged the patient's coffee without her knowledge and then had family members physically restrain her for the final lethal injection.

The doctor, who has not been publicly named, was cleared of all wrongdoing by a court in the Netherlands on Wednesday, "clarifying" the country's euthanasia law enacted in 2002 in relation to patients with "severe dementia," according to MedicalXPress.

Patients with dementia can now be killed by their doctors even if they strongly object to euthanasia at the time, so long as they have previously given consent for the fatal procedure. In other words, if a patient were to change their mind about the assisted suicide, a doctor could still legally kill them against their will. "The court ruled that in rare cases of euthanasia that were being performed on patients with severe dementia — and who had earlier made a written request for euthanasia — the doctor 'did not have to verify the current desire to die,'" MedicalXPress reported.

No consent!

And in the case of this specific Dutch woman with dementia, she never once gave an express request to be euthanized. In her will, which was renewed about a year before her death, the woman said she would like to be euthanized "whenever I think the time is right." And when she was asked if she wanted to be euthanized, she reiterated multiple times that her suffering was not bad enough to where she wanted to be killed:

“The 74-year-old woman had renewed her living will about a year before she died, writing that she wanted to be euthanized ‘whenever I think the time is right.’ Later, the patient said several times in response to being asked if she wanted to die: ‘But not just now, it's not so bad yet!’ according to a report from the Dutch regional euthanasia review committee.”

She was killed, anyway.

Part of the rationale for clearing the doctor of drugging the patient's coffee without her knowledge and killing her while she was being physically restrained against her will was in part, according to the court verdict, because "the patient no longer recognized her own reflection in the mirror," the MedicalXPress report said.

As noted by The Daily Wire last August, "A panel had previously cleared the doctor of ethical violations by saying she 'acted in good faith,'" but that decision was overturned by the Regional Euthanasia Review Committees. On Wednesday, the doctor was again cleared of wrongdoing.

The Netherlands has become a hotbed for euthanasia particularly among the most vulnerable. In 2017, 83 people with mental illness were killed in the country, as noted by National Review.

"The Dutch plunge into the euthanasia moral abyss continues to accelerate, with the number of patients killed by doctors exceeding 6,000 in 2017. That's more than 500 a month, 100 a week, and 15 a day," the outlet reported in March 2018. "Demonstrating the consequences of accepting the premise that eliminating suffering justifies eliminating the sufferer, Dutch psychiatrists killed 83 of their mentally ill patients in 2017 — up from twelve in 2012 and 43 in 2014."

Sin is progressive! It can hardly be more obvious. What begins as 'ending someone's suffering', slowly morphs in getting rid of those who are hopelessly sick, especially the aged. It will continue to morph into simply getting rid of the aged whether they are suffering or not. This is another example of #PCMadness!

Changing Gender for Perks? RT Hears Opinions on Trans Population Growth in UK Jails

And here's one more opinion for good measure

FILE PHOTO A prison in Rochester, Britain. January 2014. © Reuters / Peter Macdiarmid

With a growing number of prisoners identifying as transgender in Britain, the authorities worry that some inmates may be doing so in order to gain privileges. RT heard different takes on the issue.

There are currently up to 1,500 inmates who identify as transgender in England and Wales, according to the Chief Inspector of Prisons. That’s four times the national average in Britain.

Does that mean that transgenders a 4 times as likely to be criminals?

The authorities are now concerned that some male prisoners may choose to identify as transwomen in order to receive special perks like showering alone, having separate cells, or applying for transfer to female prisons.

The concerns were also fueled by the high-profile case of transgender inmate Karen White (6th story on link), who sexually assaulted two women last year after transferring to a female prison. Several months later, the first separate prison wing for transgender inmates was opened in Britain.

Human rights activist Peter Tatchell believes there is a way to protect both transgender inmates and female prisoners, making sure “they are comfortable and not threatened.”

We need to be aware of a tiny minority who may do bad things. But that does not mean to say that we should, therefore, generalize and adopt a kneejerk reaction to limit the rights of transgender people.

No, I like the knee-jerk reaction, myself. I think transgenders should get no special privileges until they have had reconstructive surgery. In other words - threaten to cut their wiener off and see if they still want to be trans.

But lawyer and columnist Luke Gittos argues that inmates tend to exploit the system for privileges, as “a lot of them, frankly, have nothing to lose in doing so.”

See, my plan gives them something to lose!

We need to make sure we’re robust in our treatment of this, and don’t allow ourselves to take all claims of transgenderism at face value, especially when it comes to prisoners in a male estate who stand to make material gains from doing so.

Putin’s Questioning of ‘Liberalism’ Causes Existential Shock

Interesting article - is it time for the Liberal pendulum to begin to swing back?
Or is it already in progress?

I imagine a shocked hush descending on newsrooms across the western world; perhaps a disturbance in the woke forcefield had warned them in advance.  Vladimir Putin had questioned liberalism.

In an interview with the Financial Times ahead of the G20 meeting in Japan, the Russian President gave his view of : “...the so-called liberal idea, which has outlived its purpose.”

The shock in the headlines was palpable, how could anyone question the dominance of liberalism? Liberals will accept anything (literally, that is the point) but they turn distinctly authoritarian when their beliefs are questioned.

Putin holds the view that the “liberal idea has become obsolete”, which suggests to me that he has not tried to get a job in the mainstream media recently, where not only is it not obsolete, it is a prerequisite for even getting inside the building.

The existential crisis caused by Putin’s dismissal of liberalism was such that, in a wide-ranging interview that took in the potential dangers of a nuclear arms race, war between the US and China, and even the Salisbury poisoning saga, the FT chose to headline it’s scoop with “Putin says liberalism has become obsolete.”

You may have noticed that is the same sentence structure small children use when they run to tell their mother what the big boy next door just said that blew their mind. Don’t believe me? Say this out loud: ‘Mummy, Putin says liberalism has become obsolete!’  You see?

Personally, I am a Liberal myself, there’s very little I can do about it, I hope history is kind to me and my ilk.  I am also a drinker, yet whether it’s drinking too much beer or opening the nation’s borders to mass immigration, I’m self-aware enough to wonder whether the long-term consequences might come back to bite me.

So, it’s worth delving into the details of what the Russian president said, beyond the nuance-free soundbites that have been cherry-picked for a wider audience, to see what he actually said.

“As for the liberal idea, its proponents are not doing anything. They say that all is well, that everything is as it should be. But is it?” or “The liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population”.

Objectively speaking, if there really is a wave of political populism washing across the western world, then it is probably failures with the liberal consensus that is largely to blame. People do think they’re being let down, and they blame the ideology of liberalism. A lot of people are concerned about the impact immigration has had on their lives, or they are confused about the new rules of gender, or they feel no one is representing them and that the elites are moving ever further away. If Liberals are not able to take all this into account, then electorates will find someone who can.

Later in the interview, Putin said: “Various ideas and various opinions should have a chance to exist … it does not mean that [the liberal idea] must be immediately destroyed. This point of view, this position should also be treated with respect.” Sorry, Mr President, liberals are not in the business of allowing different points of view.

So could an outside view lead to some soul searching, a discussion on whether liberalism has become ideological dogma which doesn’t always work when confronted by reality?

Well, no, Putin is the chosen bogeyman and, because he was the one who said it, Liberals will take that as a sign they must be on the right course.  But a view from the outside can be extremely useful, if you’re willing to consider it.

Is Pendulum About to Begin to Swing Back on PCMadness - Gender Identity

3 Connecticut female athletes file federal discrimination complaint
over transgender competition

Hartford, Connecticut —Three Connecticut girls who have run high school track have filed a federal discrimination complaint saying a statewide policy on transgender athletes has cost them top finishes in races and possibly college scholarships.

The complaint filed Monday with the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights was submitted by the conservative Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom on behalf of the girls, who are asking for an investigation of the policy and orders that would make competitions fair. The complaint also cites the federal Title IX rules aimed at equal rights in sports for female athletes.

"Girls deserve to compete on a level playing field," said Christiana Holcomb, legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom. "Women fought long and hard to earn the equal athletic opportunities that Title IX provides. Allowing boys to compete in girls' sports reverses nearly 50 years of advances for women under this law. We shouldn't force these young women to be spectators in their own sports."

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, which governs high school sports in the state, says its policy follows a state anti-discrimination law requiring students to be treated in school according to the gender with which they identify. That means that athletes can compete according to their expressed gender identity as opposed to their sex assigned at birth.

A spokesman for the conference had no immediate comment on the complaint Tuesday. The lawsuit follows other national debates that have brought greater awareness to transgender Americans. Last year, President Trump issued an order banning transgender troops from openly serving in the military, and the Supreme Court has been presented with cases seeking to define transgender bathroom policies, though it has so far declined to get involved.

The argument in Connecticut that gender identity amounts to an unfair advantage in sports is a recurring one in the complex debate around intersex and transgender athletes as they break barriers in sports around the world from high school to the pros.

Earlier this week, Olympic running sensation Caster Semenya — who reportedly has some intersex traits — won an interim ruling in her battle against track and field's governing body. The Swiss supreme court ordered the suspension of regulations that would require female runners with unusually high testosterone to take medication to reduce their levels of the male sex hormone if they want to compete in certain events.

The complaint from Connecticut says transgender girls have been consistently winning track and field events and the policy violates federal protections for female athletes.

The athletes who filed the complaint include Selina Soule, of Glastonbury High School, and two others whose names and schools were not disclosed.

Soule told The Associated Press earlier this year, after competing in a 55-meter dash won by a transgender student, that the issue is about fairness on the track.

"We all know the outcome of the race before it even starts; it's demoralizing," she said. "I fully support and am happy for these athletes for being true to themselves. They should have the right to express themselves in school, but athletics have always had extra rules to keep the competition fair."

Two transgender female athletes who've been competing in high school track competitions were named in the suit. Both of the teens, Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood, have won state titles in various events, the Hartford Courant reports, and have spoken openly about their transgender identity.

Yearwood's father, Rashaan, told the Courant, "As a human being — not as Andraya's father — it's disappointing that, in 2019, we're still debating who gets to participate and who doesn't." He added, "You would hope we'd gotten to a place in 300-plus years as a country that we're not debating who should be included, and who should not be. There is no place for exclusion."

And yet, you are excluding female athletes from winning and the possibilities that come with that!

Connecticut is one of at least 17 states that allow transgender high school athletes to compete without restrictions, according to Transathlete.com, which tracks state policies in high school sports across the country.

Aussie Rugby Star Apologizes After Sharing ‘I Love Jesus’ Message at Easter

Australian rugby star Samu Kerevi has apologized for “offending ” some fans after sharing an Easter message which quoted from the Bible, amid a backlash against Kerevi's international teammate Israel Folau over anti-gay comments.

Kerevi, who is captain of The Queensland Reds and has won more than 20 caps for the Wallabies, shared a message at Easter on his Instagram account which read: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16."

“Thank You Jesus for dying on the cross for me. I love you Jesus,” he added, alongside a picture of himself appearing for the Reds.

The post came amid a row involving Wallabies teammate Folau, who is facing the sack over a social media post earlier in April in which he said that “hell awaits” gay people.

Some fans questioned Kerevi’s Easter post in light of the Folau controversy, with one writing: "I know a lot of gay kids and adults in our sport would love to hear a rugby leader like you say you love and respect them for who they are – are you willing to endorse that message?"

Another wrote: "I hope you don't support Israel's comments Samu."

Kerevi later took to Instagram Stories to apologize “to anyone that I have offended in giving praise to our God on a weekend that we take off to celebrate his Sacrifice for you and I.”

After the bizarre apology, he later posted a message clarifying that he was “not apologizing for my faith in Jesus Christ my saviour."

"I do not feel obliged to apologise because of a situation happening right now to a brother of mine,” he added, referring to Folau’s case.

Kerevi has won considerable support from fans despite the initial criticism from some, while fellow Wallabies international and Queensland Reds teammate Taniela Tupou – known as ‘The Tongan Thor’ – wrote on Facebook: “Might as well sack me and all the other Pacific Islands rugby players around the world because we have the same Christian beliefs.

“I will never apologise for my faith and what I believe in, religion has got nothing to do with rugby anyways.”

Folau, meanwhile, is set to learn his fate at a code of conduct hearing with a three-member Rugby Australia panel on May 4.

The star, capped 73 times by his country, faces the termination of his contract with both club and country, ahead of the World Cup in Japan later this year.

John Robson: Sorry, Woke Brigade — White Nationalism Isn't a Major Threat

The very Liberal Canadian government, and Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland in particular, have decided that White Nationalism should be at the top of the anti-terrorism agenda. The very Liberal government of Canada is not averse to using hysteria as a political tool, and the MainStreamMedia makes little attempt to correct the hyperbole. Thank you National Post for doing just that.

The vast majority of some 20,000 terror victims in the world annually are non-white Muslims killed by non-white Muslim terrorists

It looked odd at the time. In late March our foreign minister tweeted “Today, at the UN Security Council, Canada condemned white supremacist terrorism. This grave terrorist threat must not be ignored and must be at the top of the agenda when we talk about confronting terrorism.” Really? I thought. At the top? Is it the one most likely to kill people?

suicide attacks that killed more than 300 at Sri Lankan churches and luxury hotels. Atul Loke/Getty Images

Following the Easter massacre in Sri Lanka, with over 300 dead and which ISIL has now taken responsibility for, I think “odd” looks today like an insufficient term. Naturally everybody’s against white supremacy. And with solid historical reason given the evil it did over the past 500 years. But for all the horrors of racial slavery, the biggest killers in the 20th century were Mao, Stalin and Hitler, and in no case was skin colour an issue. In the Holocaust, ethnicity was explicit, and in the Holodomor, class warfare intersected with a cultural tradition of individual farming, not communal farming, to make Ukrainians the main target of Stalin’s deliberately engineered famine. And today the biggest threat isn’t the one related to race, and our foreign minister shouldn’t be in denial about it.

If you say anything that downplays white nationalism as an ideological force or source of violence, some fool will claim you’re blowing a racist dog whistle. And will probably misspell it. But the accusation is grotesque because one thing that struck me immediately about Chrystia Freeland’s tweet was its callousness about non-white lives. The vast majority of some 20,000 terror victims in the world, year after year, are not killed by white supremacists. The most common terror victims are non-white Muslims killed by non-white Muslim terrorists. Wikipedia, for instance, says four attacks last year killed over 100 people each. In Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria. All by Islamists. Drill down to the monthly list of smaller incidents and it’s almost entirely non-whites, killed by Islamists with the occasional Maoist or purely local ethnic motive.

Even if Freeland were concerned solely with Canadian lives, it would be difficult to explain why she considered white nationalism the top threat or even “grave.” A Google search reveals a lot of people hyperventilating about it. But the Wikipedia article on “Right-wing terrorism” cites the left-leaning New America think-tank’s list of such deaths in the United States since 2001 and it’s 86, an average of five a year.

Every one matters. But Nation of Islam member John Allen Muhammad alone killed 10 people of various races, ethnicities and genders in 2002. Nidal Hasan killed 13 at Fort Hood in 2009 in what the Obama administration insisted was “workplace violence.” Then there’s 9/11 or, as U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar put it, when “some people did something.”

Obviously white nationalists are squalid losers who can be dangerous. The man who killed 50 Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand, seems to have been primarily a bigot, though also anti-Muslim. As I wrote at the time, such terrorists and their ideologies must be taken seriously. But devoting scarce anti-terrorist resources to the wrong threat leaves you vulnerable in ways that are irresponsible.

When I saw Freeland’s tweet I thought there really needs to be an adult in the room. Sure, it’s chic to condemn the West and white people. Especially in an undergraduate seminar. But she’s in government. And lest she, or someone else, be tempted to excuse her strange sense of priorities by saying she doesn’t have priorities, they’re all her top concern, grammar and logic alike forbid it.

It’s not what she said. And whoever guards everything guards nothing. Only one thing can be at “the top of the agenda,” and it should be those who kill thousands a year not those who kill dozens or fewer. How many UN members have seen a single death due to white nationalist terror in the past, say, 50 years? (Even in Canada, the horrific 2017 attack on a Quebec City mosque was motivated by religious hatred, which is not the same as racism; there are a great many white Muslims and non-white Christians.) But how many UN members have seen Islamist slaughter?

I wish people like Ms. Freeland worried more about anti-Christian violence internationally. And again whistle me no dogs. Most persecuted Christians are not white, from victims of Chinese government repression to those driven from their historic Middle Eastern communities by mob violence (first they came for the Jews), even in Bethlehem. Meanwhile, good luck denouncing anti-Semitism at the UN. Still, the possibility of genocide if Israel ever lost a war, or the wrong people got nuclear weapons, should be near the top of our security agenda. As for terror specifically, the Islamist kind is the biggest threat, especially to non-white Muslims.

Obviously we’re against all hate in principle and all terrorism in practice. But if we’re going to prioritize, it should be saving lives not sounding “woke” that tops our list. And white nationalism just isn’t that big a problem. It may be ugly, but it has few adherents and kills few people.

I wonder if the very Liberal's target is either free speech - shutting down all criticism of Islam, or, perhaps it is 'nationalism' of any kind as it runs counter to the far-left's global ideology.
