Politics - Canada's World Class Buffoon ambushes Italian PM; Sky News calls him 'the Repugnant, Incompetent Trudeau'

Newspaper calls Trudeau a 'buffoon' after lecturing Italian PM

Lecturing, or ambushing?

Author of the article: Postmedia News
Published May 21, 2023  •  1 minute read

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a self-described feminist, is being slammed for his “repugnant” behaviour after trying to “mansplain” democracy to Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

The Saturday front page of the Milan Libero newspaper. Libero
Literally: “This buffoon wants to teach us lessons.”

Meloni seemed none too pleased Friday at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, when Trudeau told her before private, bilateral talks that “Canada is concerned about some of the positions Italy is taking in terms of LGBT rights.” He added that he was looking forward to speaking to her more about the issue and “other democratic principles that the world needs.”

The buffoon would never speak to a man in such a manner, but it seems obvious he feels considerably superior to Meloni. As usual, he is delusional.

The Italian leader fired back Sunday, saying she rejected Trudeau’s criticism and that the Liberal leader had fallen “victim” to “fake news.”

She actually said: “He has fallen victim to fake news” and his assessment doesn’t correspond to “reality”.

Italian media was quick to condemn Trudeau’s latest misstep on the world stage with the Milan-based Libero newspaper splashing a picture of the Grit prime minister on its front page in blackface with the headline, translated from Italian, saying, “This buffoon wants to teach us lessons.”

Even Sky News Australia host Rita Panahi got in on the act, saying Meloni’s grimace while being lectured:

“really sums up what all of us think of the repugnant, incompetent Trudeau.”

Trudeau’s critique on Friday came in response to news that Meloni’s government told Italian city councils to stop officially recording both parents in same-sex couples and instead limit it to the biological parent. The move has sparked protests by gay rights groups.

Gay rights groups live in a magical land of their own.

I would love to see Trudeau being shunned by the other G7 leaders for his unwelcomed, misogynistic behaviour.

I'll bet The Sun is the only major Canadian news outlet that publishes this story.

UPDATE 22 MAY 2023 - CTV News covered this story on their website. CBC and Global seem to have avoided it. In the CTV report which was probably written by Associated Press, Giorgia Meloni is introduced as the Premier of Italy. Although technically correct, in Canada, provincial heads of state are called Premiers while the national head of state is called Prime Minister. Did AP use the term Premier deliberately in order to hint that Trudeau was above Meloni?

CTV also managed to neglect to mention the media outfall from Trudeau's ambush of the woman on camera, something he would never do to a man. He had an opportunity to do so with Indonesia's head of state and sat quietly without saying a word.

Germany fears for gas supply as Russia to shut down Nord Stream pipeline

July 5 (UPI) -- Russia plans to shut down Europe's largest gas pipeline, Nord Stream, for annual maintenance, next week with some in Germany fearing the temporary shut-down could become permanent.

Russian gas company Gazprom, which owns the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, announced maintenance is scheduled to run from July 11 to 22 to "test mechanical and automated systems."

But some in the European Union, which now relies on the Russian pipeline for about 40% of its gas, are not convinced the testing will run according to schedule.

"We cannot rule out the possibility that gas transport will not be resumed afterwards for political reasons," Klaus Mueller, Head of Germany's energy regulator told CNBC.

If supply "doesn't come back after maintenance because President Putin plays games or wants to hit Europe while it hurts, then the plan to fill up gas storage by the end of summer will probably not work," Henning Gloystein, director of energy, climate and resources at Eurasia Group told CNBC.

Germany, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands are all prepared to use coal-fired plants to make up for any new gas shortages. A number of European countries have also been filling underground storage with natural gas supplies to make sure there is enough fuel for the winter.

Last month, Gazprom announced it was cutting its output to Europe because of a maintenance issue, forcing Germany to warn its citizens to conserve.

"The gas flows from the Nord Stream 1 were throttled yesterday to around 40% of the maximum capacity," Germany's Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection said on its website.

German leaders saw the move as an attack on Europe over its rebuke of Russia's war in Ukraine and now worry next week's maintenance could drag on longer.

"Germany has Europe's biggest population, it's the biggest economy, it's the biggest gas consumer, it's the biggest single importer of Russian gas, and it has got nine land borders," Gloystein said. "So, whatever happens in Germany spills into the rest of Europe."

Bojo the Clown bows out of the Big Top

Boris Johnson agrees to resign, will remain PM for now

By Sean Boynton  Global News
Posted July 7, 2022 2:21 pm

Boris Johnson has resigned as Britain’s prime minister, bringing an end to one of the rockiest tenures for a world leader in modern times after a series of scandals rocked his government’s confidence in him.

Bowing to growing pressure as more than 50 ministers quit and lawmakers said he must go, Johnson spoke outside his Downing Street office Thursday to confirm he would resign.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said.

However, he said he will remain as British prime minister while a leadership contest is held to choose his successor. He will remain an MP after he steps down, one of his close aides confirmed on Twitter.

“The process of choosing that new leader should begin now. And today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will until a new leader is in place,” Johnson said.

Among the possible candidates to succeed him include former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

The leader of the opposition Labour party, Keir Starmer, welcomed the news of Johnson’s resignation, but said it should have happened “long ago”.

“He was always unfit for office. He has been responsible for lies, scandal and fraud on an industrial scale,” Starmer said.

Truss, a Conservative MP, also said Johnson was right to step down as prime minister.

“The PM has made the right decision,” she said. “We need calmness and unity now and to keep governing while a new leader is found.”

Fall from grace

Johnson’s exit marks a remarkable fall from grace for the charismatic Conservative leader, who just two-and-a-half years ago was celebrating an overwhelming election victory and the full backing of his party.

He had vowed to move forward as prime minister after narrowly surviving a confidence vote last month that was triggered by shifting stories about COVID-19 lockdown-breaking parties in government offices — some of which he attended.

But that stance proved untenable after two of his most senior cabinet ministers quit Tuesday over similarly shifting explanations about his handling of a sexual misconduct scandal that dogged a recent government appointee.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned within minutes of each other, costing Johnson the support of the men responsible for tackling two of the biggest issues facing Britain — the cost-of-living crisis and surging COVID-19 infections.

Those two were then joined by solicitor general Alex Chalk, who also joined four parliamentary private secretaries, the Conservative Party’s vice-chair and two trade envoys in abandoning Johnson and resigning. Several more ministers and government officials followed that first group out the door Wednesday, further endangering the prime minister.

In their resignation letters, Sunak and Javid both said Johnson’s credibility had been shattered by the growing list of scandals, with Chalk adding that public confidence in the government under its current leadership had “irretrievably broken down.”

European Parliament votes to include abortion rights in EU Charter

July 7 (UPI) -- Members of the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution calling for the right to abortion to be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the legislative body said Thursday.

The resolution was adopted by a vote of 324 MEPs in favor, 155 against with 38 abstentions.

"A proposal should be submitted to the [European] Council to amend Article 7 of the charter, adding that 'everyone has the right to safe and legal abortion,'" the parliament said in a news release.

Parliamentary members expect the EC to meet to discuss a convention to revise the European Union Treaties at a future date.

This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned federal protection of abortion rights, leaving to each state to restrict or ban abortion.

Thursday's resolution by the European Parliament also condemns the U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The parliament said it is urging its members to lobby member states to decriminalize abortion and "to remove and combat the remaining legal, financial, social and practical restrictions still hampering access in some member states."

In June, MEPs adopted a resolution calling for the landmark Roe vs. Wade case to be upheld.

Abortion rights vary widely among EU members, with Malta having the strictest restrictions, not allowing the procedure under any circumstances.

"Today, the [European Parliament] has stood up for all women by sending a strong message that will resonate worldwide," MEP Susana Solís Pérez said in a statement to Politico.

"Safe and legal abortion is a fundamental right and, as such, it should be included in our charter."

‘Suspend that principal’: High school scraps 9/11 football tribute

‘for fear that red, white & blue colors might cause offense’

Eastlake High has caused outrage by reportedly canceling a 9/11 football memorial.

A high school principal in Washington State has faced online fury after it was reported students were prohibited from wearing red, white and blue to honor the 9/11 attacks at a football match for fear of causing offense.

According to radio host Jason Rantz, football players weren't allowed to don the patriotic colors at Eastlake High School in Sammamish as they might "unintentionally cause offense to some who see it differently".

After the patriotic-themed tribute was reportedly canceled "at the last minute", one student explained on Rantz's show how the decision was made as "red, white and blue was going to be seen as racially insensitive and may affect people in a way that we will not understand, and for that reason we were [made] to change our theme."

I think I would like a list of such peoples who would be offended by the American flag? I am hard-pressed to think of whom it might be other than those who flattened the twin towers and killed nearly 3,000 people.

Instead of preventing some people from being offended, he has offended most Americans. How did this guy get to be a principal with decisions like that?

KTTH 770/94.5FM also uploaded a screenshot of an email from one of Eastlake's associate principals which said she understood the "sacrifice and values our flag represents, but I think they [school leadership] just did not want to unintentionally cause offense to some who see it differently."

Furthermore, Rantz said that the principal Chris Bede, and the district’s communication director Shannon Parthemer, failed to go into specifics regarding who exactly would be offended by seeing the players dressed in such colors.

"Since it was not a home game, there was no opportunity to have an announcement about Patriots Day and to share why students were dressed in red, white and blue," said Parthemer, who told Rantz a decision was made by a still-unnamed member of staff to cancel the theme to Bede's surprise.

"I do want to clarify that schools do not have a right to ban students from wearing anything as long as it is not lewd, vulgar etc. And the theme of red, white and blue definitely would not fit into that category," is what Bede said to parents.

On the internet, though, as news spread of the incident, some users have been calling for his head.

"That principle should be suspended," demanded one.

"You should be outraged. I hope something positive comes out of it on your side, like the firing of the principal," said another, after a parent took to Twitter to explain she would "be heard".

"Oh my Lord, we simply must get over the worry over the micro-aggressions. Let the sensitive go see a therapist and let the rest of society just live their lives," said a calmer head.

"Wearing the colors of our nation might offend some as we commemorate a tragedy that happened here?" a separate party asked.

"Even if you have issues with policies, beliefs, and attitudes, which I do, it was still a national tragedy that occurred and those who died should be remembered and honored."

President Joe Biden released a statement Friday urging Congress to “swiftly pass” the Equality Act, a bill that would eliminate the legal recognition of male and female sex, cater to gender ideology, and designate protection for the unborn as “pregnancy” discrimination.

Biden said:

I applaud Congressman David Cicilline [D-RI] and the entire Congressional Equality Caucus for introducing the Equality Act in the House of Representatives yesterday, and I urge Congress to swiftly pass this historic legislation. Every person should be treated with dignity and respect, and this bill represents a critical step toward ensuring that America lives up to our foundational values of equality and freedom for all.

Full equality has been denied to LGBTQ+ Americans and their families for far too long. Despite the extraordinary progress the LGBTQ+ community has made to secure their basic civil rights, discrimination is still rampant in many areas of our society. The Equality Act provides long overdue federal civil rights protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, locking in critical safeguards in our housing, education, public services, and lending systems — and codifying the courage and resilience of the LGBTQ+ movement into enduring law.

The House is expected to vote on the Equality Act, H.R. 5, next week. The legislation, which would rewrite civil rights law to include “sexual orientation and gender identity” as protected classes, would likely upend the national culture as Americans have known it.

“The so-called Equality Act is legislative malpractice that turns equality on its head,” said Ryan Anderson, president of Ethics & Public Policy Center (EPPC), in a statement. “It isn’t drafted as a shield to protect vulnerable minorities from unjust discrimination, but as a sword to persecute those who do not embrace new sexual and gender ideologies.”

Anderson underscored the tremendous impact the legislation will have on the privacy of women and girls, as well as the punitive consequences to which faith-based institutions and organizations will be exposed at its hands:

It sacrifices the equality, safety, and privacy of women, while privileging men who identify as women: If this bill becomes law, they’d have a civil right to spend the night in a battered women’s shelter, disrobe in a women’s locker room, and compete on a women’s sports team—even children at K-12 public schools.

Religious institutions fare no better. Religious schools, adoption agencies, and other charities would face federal sanction for operating according to basic biology and mainstream Biblical teaching on sex and marriage. Outrageously, this act exempts itself from the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Pope Francis would be treated as the legal equivalent of a Jim Crow segregationist.

Anderson noted that any questioning of transgender medical treatments and surgeries would be labeled “discrimination” if the Equality Act becomes law.

“And any refusal to support or provide abortions would now be treated as ‘pregnancy’ discrimination,” he continued. “And no one—not even the act’s sponsors—can tell us what would be required under the act to avoid committing ‘discrimination’ in the case of ‘non-binary’ gender identities.”

Terry Schilling, executive director of American Principles Project (APP), explained further the Equality Act will make permanent in federal law Biden’s executive order on his first day as president regarding “Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation.”

Schilling said in a statement:

Of course, this has been their goal for a long time, and we know by now the very terrible consequences which will occur if the ‘Equality’ Act passes. Female athletes will be forced to compete against biological males; women will be forced to share private spaces like bathrooms, locker rooms, and shelters with men; and religious charities will be coerced into violating their beliefs or else be shut down.

Schilling warned while the “Equality” Act sounds virtuous, “every member of Congress should recognize” that a vote in favor of it “is a vote against women, particularly women and girl athletes, as well as a vote against Americans of faith.”

There is much more on this on Breitbart.

UK government launches plan to fight ‘unacceptable silencing’
in UK universities

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has unveiled the UK government’s plan to tackle “unacceptable silencing and censoring” on university campuses after speakers have been no-platformed and censored for views deemed controversial.

The new measures could force universities to accept a free speech condition if they want to receive government funding, require student unions to guarantee that their members and any guest speakers are entitled to lawful free speech, see institutions that fail to protect free speech face fines and allow speakers who are denied a platform or academics who are dismissed to seek compensation in court. “Free speech underpins our democratic society and our universities have a long and proud history of being places where students and academics can express themselves freely,” Williamson declared while announcing the proposals.

I am deeply worried about the chilling effect on campuses
of unacceptable silencing and censoring.

A 2018 report from the UK’s Joint Committee on Human Rights supported Williamson’s concerns, as it found numerous examples of censorship and debates being shut down, raising concerns about restrictions on free speech and the use of “safe space” policies in educational institutions.

Read: the exaggerated overuse of 'safe space' policies...

But, the new measures have received a critical response from some in the education sector, as they see the move as unnecessary, believing that concerns about censorship are overblown and there are bigger issues that need to be addressed, particularly given the challenges facing the industry during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There is no evidence of a freedom of expression crisis on campus,” the vice president for Higher Education at the National Union of Students, Hillary Gyebi-Ababio, said opposing Williamson’s proposals, claiming institutions are “constantly taking positive steps to help facilitate the thousands of events that take place each year.”

The National Union of Students currently has a no platform policy, which was introduced in 1974, to fight back against fascist and racist organisations, that allows members to vote on barring speakers from campus to “keep students safe” at the organisation’s yearly national conference.

There has been a growing list of academics experts and speakers, from all sides of the political spectrum, who have been banned or no-platformed by UK universities in recent years due to remarks they’ve made which have been seen as controversial or offensive by some students.

Journalist Peter Hitchens had a talk at Portsmouth University indefinitely “postponed” when the Students Union claimed he shouldn’t speak during LGBT+ History Month due to previous views that he’d expressed in his published work.
Labour politician Chris Williamson was denied a platform at the Royal Holloway Debating Society over comments that were deemed offensive and controversial by Jewish students
Nobel Laureate Professor Michael Levitt was “uninvited” from a joint university bio design conference for his “Covid claims” despite not planning to discuss the pandemic during his appearance.
Author and ethologist Richard Dawkins had a planned talk at Trinity College, Dublin cancelled due to his views on religion, particularly Islam.

Dawkins is renowned for trashing religion, especially Christianity. That, however, apparently wasn't a problem for Trinity College, until they discovered he also trashed Islam.

Scientist Richard Dawkins ditched: are university students stifling free speech?

It is one of the oldest university societies in the world. The College Historical Society - popularly known as the Hist - has been a feature of student life at Trinity College Dublin since 1747.

It boasts about 10,000 members and has achieved a mild sort of celebrity outside of Trinity's venerable grounds thanks to the controversial debates it has hosted over the years.

This week it found itself in the glare of public opinion once more when it was revealed that an invitation to the veteran atheist, evolutionary biologist and contrarian Richard Dawkins to speak at the society had been rescinded.

According to the TCD student newspaper, the University Times, the Hist's auditor (chairperson) Bríd O'Donnell said the society would "not be moving ahead with his address as we value our members' comfort above all else".

Professor Richard Dawkins

Announcing the cancellation on her Instagram page, O'Donnell said she had been "unaware of Richard Dawkins' opinions on Islam and sexual assault until this evening.

"I had read his Wikipedia page and researched him briefly," she wrote. "Regretfully, I didn't look further into him before moving forward with the invitation... I want to thank everyone who pointed out this valuable information to me. I truthfully hope we didn't cause too much discomfort and if so, I apologise and will rectify it."

As soon as the University Times tweeted the story, the floodgates opened. The vast majority of those who responded to the post suggested the society had made a mistake in favouring student "comfort" over robust debate and engagement with different ideas.

The Trinity professor Brian Lucey tweeted: "I suspect that almost every headline speaker over decades has had some comments that were regrettable, unfortunate, disreputable or disgusting. That doesn't mean they're not worth debating."

Some suggested it was a form of cancel culture and one that was becoming more prevalent in Irish universities.

TCD economics lecturer Ronan Lyons, a former member of the Hist, was among several academics to argue that the society had acted unwisely. "College life is supposed to be a time where you are out of your comfort zone and where you are challenged to ideas that might be different to your own," he says. "The idea of 'comfort' just doesn't come into it.

"I have no problem if there are established rules. For instance, if it's a case of, 'We welcome debates of all kinds, but the following topics are not up for discussion, such as the Holocaust', that's fine. But the idea of a debating society that would prioritise the comfort of its members sort of misses the point of a debating society.

Think of the Oscar Wilde quote: an idea that is not dangerous
is unworthy of being called an idea at all."

Wilde himself attended a number of Hist debates while an undergraduate at Trinity.

"I'm not telling any society what it can and cannot do, but I'd be worried if it affected the attitude of learning new ideas in education," Lyons adds. "I mean, I'd be worried if my students didn't want to hear new ideas.

"One of the modules I teach is the development of the Irish economy and, in principle, somebody with certain personal, political beliefs, might be uncomfortable with some of the ideas that you come across when you study Irish economic history. Like, 'Was the Famine a genocide?' Almost certainly not by any reasonable definition, but if you're of a certain political persuasion that would be an uncomfortable view.

"Another module, the history of the world economy, also covers some very uncomfortable topics, such as slavery. It's not easy to talk about that, but it is something that has to be taught. You don't go to a gym to be comfortable, you go there to push yourself and I think college is like a mental gym where you're getting yourself out of that comfort zone."

For University College Cork student Bryan O'Shea, the founder of Free Speech Ireland, third-level education is the very life-stage when challenging ideas are confronted. "University should be anything but a safe space," he says. "Debating societies and universities should provide an open forum for discussion and critical thinking. It is the key tenet of a university - to confront students with challenging ideas and dissenting opinions.

Illiberal trend among progressives

"No-platforming a speaker suggests the correct position has been decided in advance. This is unacceptable. Any institution genuinely committed to public debate should push back against the illiberal trend prevailing among left-wing, progressive students.

"We see this manifesting itself elsewhere in society as well. The ostracisation and dogmatic response to anyone who questions the Covid-related restrictions is an example. There is an absolute refusal by a lot of people on the left to engage in a free and open exchange of ideas with those whose opinions they disagree with."

O'Shea believes the no-platforming phenomenon is, chiefly, employed by liberals. "They have totally rejected the idea of free speech and embraced their own b
eliefs that they deem to be the morally correct and unquestionably virtuous ones," he says. "They seek only to enforce their orthodoxy. Progressives have wormed their way to the top of Irish society and have demonstrated their absolute intolerance for dissent."

And not just Irish society, it's all over the western world.

It is a sentiment that is echoed outside of Ireland, particularly among academics such as Jordan Peterson - equally loved and loathed for his 12 Rules for Life bestseller and refusal to recognise words such as 'cis', a comparatively new derivation to describe someone whose gender identity is the same as their sex at birth.

The provocative broadcaster Piers Morgan is set to challenge the no-platforming orthodoxy in his forthcoming book Wake Up: Why the 'Liberal' War on Free Speech is even more Dangerous than Covid-19.

Some are especially concerned by what they see as an erosion of free speech on our university campuses - a trend that is said to have been prevalent in some US universities over the past decade.

In their polemical 2018 book The Coddling of the American Mind, Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff argue that today's teenagers and early twentysomethings are being disadvantaged as a result of 'safe spaces', 'trigger words' and the banishment of those deemed to cause offence. They argue the phenomenon of 'safetyism', coupled with over-parenting when children are young, has led to the emergence of modern identity politics and hypersensitivity. And to cancel culture and no-platforming.

Labour senator Ivana Bacik, who has long associations with the Hist, believes it is unfair to castigate today's university students as less robust than those in her time at college and argues that modern-day campuses are just as willing to entertain challenging ideas as before.

"No-platforming is not a new phenomenon," she says. "It's been happening for years. In 1988, I was one of a group of students at the Students' Union at Trinity who wanted to no-platform the Holocaust-denier David Irving. At the time, we made a strong argument that he should be prevented from organising on campus; but it wasn't a free-speech issue."

The issue provoked much controversy at the time - and did so again a decade later when students at UCC planned to have Irving address them. For many years Irving, who is now 82, had been a free-speech test case for universities here and in the UK.

"I would never want to de-platform anyone, unless their views have been shown to be completely wrong, as has been the case with Irving," says Bacik. "His assertion that the Holocaust did not happen is outrageous. I think anyone who wilfully distorts history should not be afforded the free speech rights of everyone else."

While such contentious issues would be magnified by social media today, Bacik says the students' union stance on Irving caused considerable publicity at the time. "It wasn't just a college issue," she says, "there were all sorts of letters published in the Irish Independent and the Irish Times - as students, we were strongly criticised for denying him a platform."

Bacik, who has spoken on panels alongside Richard Dawkins, has been on the receiving end of the no-platforming phenomenon. "Some years ago, I was invited to speak at Notre Dame University [the private Catholic research university in Indiana] and the invitation was rescinded by the university organisation over my pro-choice views on abortion."

Where does she stand on no-platforming those who have inflammatory views, but don't distort history or, by any reasonable measure, tell lies? "It's very tricky," she says. "You have to take each speaker in context. Free speech is a hugely important principle in any democracy, absolutely, but it's never been an absolute right. In our constitution, it's subject to restrictions. There are libel laws and incitement to hatred laws in Ireland, too. And one has to bear that in mind.

"When it comes to universities, the whole point of debating societies is for students to hear different sides of a debate. At the same time, there's no right to be invited. It's up to the students on these committees to decide who to invite and who not to and I'm not going to wade into that one."

UCD graduate Juliette Barnes, keen debater at the university's Literary and Historical Society - commonly known as the L&H - believes college can be a key time for being confronted with ideas diametrically opposed to your own. "I always spoke on the freedom of speech side because I'm a big believer in it and a big believer in pushing against cancel culture and no-platforming in general.

Flaw in the debate

"I'm a libertarian, so I'm all about individual people feeling enabled to do what they feel is the right thing to do economically, freedom of speech-wise, socially, whatever. And I think people absolutely should have the right to say what they feel even if it's obviously wrong, or inflammatory, or stupid, or hurtful. But I similarly think the flip side of that is that individual organisations also have the right to choose who they want to give a platform to."

Barnes has been following the Hist/Richard Dawkins story with interest this week. "A flaw in the no-platforming debate is where we can sometimes assume that a platform is a privilege you have when a platform is actually not synonymous with free speech. Free speech is the right you have and the platform to execute that upon is the privilege."

For Barnes, there is a difference between controversial figures being invited to a debate with those of opposing views as distinct from merely getting to address an audience, uncontested.

"A situation where there is a debate and the audience is getting to hear both sides is a reasonable contention," she says. "When I was in college, there was a big furore [at TCD] over the Hist inviting [then Ukip leader] Nigel Farage and people saying that the issue with him being invited was that he was just an individual speaker in an environment that wasn't being moderated by a hardened journalist and that would give him [Farage] an opportunity to say what he wanted and ride roughshod over everything."

Ultimately, the Farage visit went ahead - with the political journalist Pat Leahy chairing the discussion - but not before the Hist decided to revoke the awarding of the gold medal that it presents to many of its guest speakers.

For Bryan O'Shea, it represented much that has gone wrong in college campuses today. "They [the Hist] issued a grovelling apology for the high crime of inviting Nigel Farage. It will be interesting to see who they invite through the rest of the year. Will they all be left-wing? If so, will these speakers make people feel uncomfortable?"

While committee members of the Hist may have been feeling the weight of opinion this week, some have called for tolerance. Tomás Ryan - the TCD neuroscientist who has become a well-known figure thanks to his media engagements during the Covid pandemic - urged those critical of the decision to rescind the Dawkins offer to take a philosophical approach.

"This was a mistake," he tweeted. "But undergraduate students need to be allowed to make mistakes, ideally without intense international social media pressure. This seems like an error of judgment rather than intolerance. TCD encourages respectful debate from diverse perspectives."

#PCMadness - The Cancel Culture Outs Themselves as Neo-Nazi Idiots Against Mandalorian Star

..
The Lucasfilm star has been dropped from future Mandalorian films be a crush of nonsensical and cruel responses to a Tweet she made. Gina Carano, aside from being very attractive, is very intelligent, articulate, and honest. These are traits that none of her critics can claim. Their interpretations of her comments and the suggestions they make, make it obvious that none of them understood what she really said, or grossly misinterpreted it intentionally.

Lucasfilm should be ashamed for surrendering to this motley crew of idiots who, in this scenario, represent the Nazis, and represent them very well. Their very response proves the accuracy of her statement.

‘Mandalorian’ co-star Gina Carano will not be making another appearance on the hit show, Lucasfilm announced, after she was accused of comparing Republicans to Jews living in Nazi Germany in an Instagram post.

Carano took to her Instagram story on Wednesday with a shared post from another user, referencing the plight of Jews living under the Third Reich and drawing a broader point about the persecution of political opponents.

“Most people don’t realize today that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews,” the post said, adding: “How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

The message, initially posted from the account of the ‘Warrior Priest Podcast’, soon triggered an explosive reaction on social media, sending #FireGinaCarano into the Twitter trends as netizens piled on the actress and called to have her booted from the popular ‘Star Wars’ spin-off series.

A common charge from Carano’s Twitter critics – as well as some entertainment media – suggested that she compared “the holocaust to being a Republican,” although the post made no mention of Republicans, Democrats, or indeed anything specific to American politics. Some detractors took even more creative license, accusing Carano of “defending Nazis” – on what grounds remains a mystery.

Hey @Jon_Favreau defending nazis is super gross, maybe do something about it? #FireGinaCaranopic.twitter.com/IXLSVLdNg4

Others launched a barrage of buzzwords at the actress, arguing the latest controversy merely showed what a “transphobic,”“anti-mask,”“alt-right,” QAnon-believing “Trump supporter” Carano is, urging ‘Mandalorian’ director Jon Favreau to fire her for any of the above transgressions. Sharing “anti-Semitic images,” apparently, is now at the top of the list.

Hours after the controversy kicked off, Lucasfilm, the studio behind ‘The Mandalorian’, announced that the actress would not be returning for the show’s third season, declining to say whether she was actually fired but still referencing her “abhorrent” social media posts.

Astonishing!

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable,” the studio said, apparently referring to her Instagram share earlier in the day.

Some observers pushed back on the righteous indignation, however, with comedian and pundit Tim Young arguing that those demanding Carano’s cancellation only proved her point about the dangers of political prejudice.

“They hate her for her opinion and believe she doesn't deserve a job or to even exist in their society,” he said.

How is this "Supporting Nazis" - Please elaborate... because your tweet - Which doesn't actually show her defending Nazis, will still go out as evidence that she did... So yeah, please explain... I'll wait.

An outspoken conservative, Carano is no stranger to online rage mobs, previously triggering calls for her firing after posting memes that mocked the use of face masks as a precaution during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her support for former president Donald Trump, as well as her apparent endorsement of his repeated claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 race, have also earned the actress scorn from opponents.

‘Merkel’s surrender & worst of all possible worlds’: Soros pens angry op-ed over Polish-Hungarian victory in EU budget talks
12 Dec 2020 00:26

The headline is, of course, the very opposite of the truth, in my humble opinion. Merkel may have surrendered to Hungary and Poland, but she stood up to Soros, and by doing so, the 'worst of all possible worlds' was avoided, for now.

Hungary and Poland getting the EU to abandon its conditioning of Covid-19 relief on ‘rule of law’ standards aimed to control their policies has incensed international financier George Soros, who called it a German surrender.

The European Commission originally imposed “rule-of-law requirements” on member states for disbursing the pandemic recovery funds. The measure was seen as a method of pressure on Budapest and Warsaw, which have been at odds with Brussels over their laws on the media, the judiciary and LGBTQI+ rights, among other things. Hungary and Poland responded by threatening to veto the entire seven-year EU budget, prompting Brussels to back down.

To Soros, the Hungarian-born US citizen who funds ‘open society’ causes around the world, this was “the worst of all possible worlds,” and amounted to a “surrender” by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to an op-ed Project Syndicate published on Thursday.

Merkel “caved in to Hungarian and Polish extortion,” Soros wrote, blaming the German chancellor personally for the outcome of the talks. She is “something of the sole main decision-maker for the EU,” he argued, what with President Emmanuel Macron of France “temporarily distracted by the laïcité issue,” as Soros euphemistically described the country’s woes with Islamist terrorism.

Poland and Hungary are “brazenly challenging the values on which the European Union has been built,” Soros argued.

The EU was not built on the destruction of Christian values, as far as I know.

While labeling Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) government “illiberal,” much of Soros’s vitriol was reserved for Hungarian PM Viktor Orban, whose “kleptocratic regime” he alleged “has stolen and misappropriated vast sums during his decade in power.”

Orban’s government has cracked down on Soros’s NGOs, universities and other projects in Hungary over the past decade. The financier turned to Brussels for help, and in October the European Court of Justice sought to strike down the Hungarian education reform that compelled Soros to relocate his Central European University to Austria.

Budapest struck back by accusing the EU of “executing the Soros Plan” with its budget conditions, and attempting to “blackmail and pressure dissenting member states to fall in line,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs wrote last month.

Soros concluded his December 10 editorial declaring that all he can do is “express the moral outrage that people who believed in the EU as the protector of European and universal values must feel.”

That’s somewhat facetious, given the billions of dollars at his disposal
to influence lawmakers and fund media and pressure groups.

When the Hungarian culture commissioner Szilard Demeter wrote an op-ed last month described Europe as “George Soros’ gas chamber,” and called the financier “the liberal Fuehrer,” opposition politicians called for his firing while the American Jewish Committee in Central Europe and the International Auschwitz Committee demanded an apology.

“Poison gas flows from the capsule of a multicultural open society, which is deadly to the European way of life,” Demeter had written in the piece, which he was forced to retract, as well as delete his social media.

There is no place on social media for the truth. Cudos to Poland and Hungary for not selling their souls to Soros.

San Francisco man arrested for vehicle theft for 14th time in 18 months
as Soros-funded DA claims too many people are in jail

San Francisco police apparently tried to make a point last week when they publicized the arrest of a man who had been busted for vehicle theft 13 times in 18 months – and repeatedly let out of jail to repeat his crimes.

The point must have been lost on Chesa Boudin, the district attorney who was elected last year with funding help from an associate of billionaire George Soros. The suspect was let out again. And now? He has tallied his 14th arrest for vehicle theft in 18 months after police in San Francisco's Tenderloin district again spotted him riding an allegedly stolen motorcycle.

“The same suspect continues to steal vehicles,” the police department tweeted early Friday morning. “Tonight, he is back in custody for his 14th motor vehicle theft arrest.” The motorcycle had a stolen license plate, and its vehicle identification numbers had been removed, police added.

Presumably, the suspect doesn't get caught every time he steals, so there's no telling how many vehicles he might have taken. Property crime is rampant in San Francisco, with more than 5,300 motor vehicle thefts reported in this year's first 11 months, up 33 percent from 2019's pace, according to police data. Car burglaries are even more common. In 2017-2019, a vehicle was broken into about every 20 minutes, on average.

Boudin is part of a wave of Soros-backed prosecutors across the US who are reducing enforcement of crime. After being elected, he almost immediately fired veteran prosecutors in the DA's office. The son of Weather Underground radical left extremists who were imprisoned for murder when he was 14 months old, Boudin has spoken out against mass incarceration and racial disparities in criminal justice. His plan for “rapid decarceration” was accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. San Francisco's jail population is being cut to 600 from 1,100. He also banned prosecutions of so-called quality-of-life crimes, such as prostitution, public urination and blocking sidewalks.

The result, according to some observers, is increasing lawlessness. “The city used to be a treasure,” one Twitter commenter said. “Now it's overwhelmed with aggressive, dangerous druggies and filthy streets where it's genuinely scary to walk the sidewalks in the daytime.”

News of the serial vehicle thief's 14th arrest only exacerbated such frustrations. “You can't even make this s**t up,” MMA fighter Jake Shields tweeted. Another observer said, “This is like a skit on some comedy show, back when those were funny. Soon enough, all they'll be left with is criminals and rich elitists in gated communities wondering where the taxable income went.”

Twitter users speculated that the vehicle thief would be back on the street by the weekend and would soon reach arrest No. 15. One observer suggested sarcastically that the suspect must be a master escape artist who keeps getting out of jail.

“I can't wait for the movie,” he said. “I mean, the only alternative is some morons keep deliberately letting him out of jail. But that'd be stupid.”

Swiss parliament votes to allow same-sex marriage
– but public may have final say in a referendum

Legislators in Switzerland have approved a bill to allow same sex-couples to marry. But it's too early to call victory for the LGBTQ community – opponents of the legislation have promised to put it to a referendum.

The vote, which took place in both chambers of the parliament on Friday, was far from unanimous. The bill was backed by 136 MPs in the National Council, with 48 against it and nine abstaining. In the Council of States, 24 deputies were in favor of gay marriage, 11 of their colleagues rejected the idea and seven abstained.

The bill, allowing gay couples to get married, while also granting lesbian couples access to sperm donations, faces yet another hurdle before becoming a law.

The conservative Federal Democratic Union party, which stands for Christian values, has announced that it's going to put the issue to a referendum vote. This means that the Swiss public might have to decide if same-sex marriages are to become a thing in their country.

"If the opponents launch a referendum, we're ready," Matthias Erhardt from the Rainbow Families association, which protects the rights of gay parents in the country, told AFP. "We have 82 percent of the population behind us," he insisted.

Switzerland remains one of the few European nations where same-sex marriage is still illegal. Members of Parliament have been debating legislation on the issue since 2013.

At the moment, the Alpine nation allows gay and lesbian couples to enter into so-called "registered partnerships," which doesn't provide the right to obtain Swiss citizenship or to jointly adopt children.

UK ex-doctors volunteering to help with Covid-19 vaccination blocked by
mandatory DIVERSITY training & paperwork forest
1 Jan 2021 21:45

Thousands of retired doctors and nurses volunteering to rejoin the UK’s National Health Service during the pandemic are being forced to endure “diversity training” – but vaccination training is optional.

NHS veterans applying to return to the service are required to supply a whopping 21 pieces of evidence, the Daily Telegraph revealed on Wednesday, noting that the “red tape” had created a massive bottleneck in hiring with just 5,000 of over 40,000 doctors and nurses who applied for the positions starting in March had been hired by July.

A list of the requirements was posted to social media the same day, and the service’s bizarre requests raised eyebrows across the country. In addition to standard requests like identity documents, proof of education, certification in such urgent-care basics as resuscitation, the NHS demands applicants complete courses in baffling subjects like “preventing radicalization” and “equality, diversity and human rights.”

Even as hospitals complain of staffing shortages and job applicants tear their hair out at the number of hoops they’re forced to jump through, the NHS has refused to budge on its requirements that doctors need not only be medically competent, but mentally compliant. Indeed, the service defended its “stringent recruitment process,” arguing its goal was to “recruit a wide array of individuals from a variety of backgrounds – many of whom are not registered healthcare professionals.”

What happens when ministry leaders have no training in their ministries

This is what happens when you put people in charge of a ministry who have no training or experience in that ministry. Matt Hancock is Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. He has no training or experience for either. He is a trained economist.

Sir Chris Wormald KCB, Permanent Secretary also seems to have no experience or training in health or social care.

As such, I might suggest they have more interest in doing things in a politically correct manner than in a medically effective manner, hence the emphasis on the 'variety of backgrounds' and the deemphasis on healthcare backgrounds. Just my humble opinion!

If the NHS is deliberately attempting to fill empty positions with non-medical staff, one might question why it doesn’t require applicants to show proof of training in vaccine administration or vaccine storage – two requested documents that are not listed as “required.” Surely, it’s more important for someone who will be vaccinating a large number of individuals with shots that require deep refrigeration to know how to dispense and store those vaccines than it is that they prove competency in “data security awareness.”

More ominously, vaccinators are not required to complete a course titled “Introduction to Anaphylaxis” – even as a growing number of vaccine recipients have experienced life-threatening allergic reactions. While Pfizer, whose vaccine was the first to be approved in the UK, has emphasized the importance of having staff trained in recognizing the signs of anaphylaxis and equipping vaccination sites with the materials needed to save lives, it’s healthcare providers’ job to ensure their employees are competent.

Even the chair of the Royal College of GPs, Professor Martin Marshall, has denounced the NHS’ red-tape-laden policies, as well as the lack of instruction regarding how, when, and where the Covid-19 jabs are supposed to be administered. “The workforce isn’t big enough to allow” for getting “30 million people vaccinated twice in six months,” he told the Guardian, noting that numerous chronic and acute conditions that have nothing to do with coronavirus still require doctors to treat.

But the NHS has made clear for months that competence is not their chief concern during the pandemic. Aside from its 2020-2021 list of priorities, which includes a directive to “recruit people with learning disabilities,” the service even adopted a measure in February that would allow staff to refuse treatment to patients deemed ‘guilty’ of making sexist or racist comments. The mandates seem to make a mockery of the Hippocratic oath, which requires physicians “first do no harm,” though it supposedly can’t be invoked for patients who require critical care. However, such requirements have an unfortunate tendency to turn into slippery slopes.

#PCMadness Attack Strikes Nasdaq, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, and The Canadian Government

..
Nasdaq threatens 75% of listed companies with order to appoint women & LGBT or other 'diverse' directors to board – or else

US stock exchange Nasdaq has warned listed companies they must appoint at least two “diverse” directors to their board – a ‘self-identified’ female and an “underrepresented minority” or LGBTQ person – or possibly face delisting.

Nasdaq revealed its plan to turbocharge diversity on its exchange in a proposal filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday.

Under the proposed new rules, not only will all listed US companies be required to “publicly disclose consistent, transparent diversity statistics regarding their board of directors,” but “most” companies would have to either appoint “diverse” board members or explain why they hadn’t done so in a letter.

The mandatory addition of “one [director] who self-identifies as female and one who self-identifies as either an underrepresented minority or LGBTQ+” appears to leave room for Rachel Dolezal-style “self-identification” as something other than white, male, or straight – a potential loophole for companies that prefer to keep their current boards. Non-US companies and small firms would be permitted to appoint two female directors instead.

Listed companies would be required to publish their diversity stats within a year of the SEC adopting Nasdaq’s proposal, and be required to have “one diverse director” within two years of implementation. Depending on company size, they would have four or five years to comply with the two-director requirement. Those who fall short can escape delisting only “if they provide a public explanation of their reasons for not meeting the objectives.”

While the exchange’s reasoning behind the proposal – to “enhance investor confidence that all listed companies are considering diversity in the context of selecting directors” – has already raised some eyebrows, Nasdaq insisted it had analyzed “over two dozen studies that found an association between diverse boards and better financial performance and corporate governance.”

However, with 75 percent of currently-listed Nasdaq companies falling short of the proposed requirements, according to the New York Times’ financial blog DealBook, some have questioned how piling on new regulations is supposed to improve financial performance. While Nasdaq has hit record highs in recent days, much of the real economy is still in shambles from the Covid-19 economic shutdowns and in no shape to expend resources on the hunt for box-checking board candidates.

To enforce the new quota system, Nasdaq has partnered with Equilar, a “leading provider of corporate leadership data solutions.” As ZeroHedge pointed out, Equilar’s own board of directors appears to lack any ethnic diversity.

That's probably why ethnicity wasn't included in the list. BTW, neither were disabled, pedophiles, illegal aliens, seniors, religious diversity, languages, etc., etc.

The proposal was widely panned, as social media users joked Nasdaq was “turning into [a] college admissions office” and argued that selecting directors based on their skin color, genitalia and sexual preference epitomized the bigotry most “diversity” measures claim to fight. “This delegitimizes women and POC,” one user tweeted, pointing out that “people will think they achieved their position by quota and not talent.”

Others merely wondered how Nasdaq planned to enforce such a rule.

Though some, inevitably, thought it didn’t go far enough, insisting companies wouldn’t benefit from diversity unless they had at least three women on their boards.

At the same time as Nasdaq was hopping aboard the woke express, investment bank Credit Suisse unveiled its “LGBT-350” index on Tuesday to widespread groans. Many wondered about the need for such an index.

The bank is by no means the only outfit obsessed with surface-level attributes – Goldman Sachs will no longer take a company public unless it has at least one “diverse” board member. Since September, the state of California has required companies headquartered there to have a minimum number of minority directors or face six-figure fines.

And, lest we forget, The Canadian Government! Trudeau's Cabinet was chosen based on ethnic and sexual diversity as well as religious diversity, except Christianity.
