Bits and Bites from Around the World > Man tells 4 y/o to shoot cops; Info points to murder-suicide by pilot of MH370

A father told his four-year-old child to fire a gun at officers following a dispute over a McDonald’s order, police in Utah have said. The gun was seized from the child just as it was fired.

The incident happened on Monday lunchtime at a drive-through restaurant in Midvale, in suburban Salt Lake City. The unidentified 21-year-old man had begun arguing with staff, demanding his order be corrected while brandishing a gun in their direction, Unified Police spokeswoman Sergeant Melody Cutler told the media.

Staff corrected his order, asked him to move into a waiting area, and called the police. The disgruntled customer apparently failed to cooperate with the attending officers and had to be pulled from his vehicle. The agents then spotted the child holding the gun, which was pointed towards them. An officer managed to push the gun to one side as it was fired, receiving a minor injury to his arm as he did so.

According to Sgt Cutler, the officer in question shouted “Kid!”, alerting his colleagues not to fire back at the four-year-old. A witness informed the police that they had heard the father tell the child, who was in the backseat with a three-year-old sibling, to shoot at the cops, Cutler said.

The father remains in custody and Unified Police say the incident is currently an “active investigation.”

The idiot should never be allowed near his children again. As I see it, it was attempted murder by proxy, of a cop, or more than one.

Pilot's baffling 22 minute manoeuvre which could hold the key

to proving MH370 mystery WAS a murder-suicide

On March 8 in 2014, the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 disappeared from view

A bizarre 22-minute manoeuvre could prove the doomed MH370 flight was actually a murder-suicide plot by one of the pilots, a top Australian pilot has claimed.

On March 8 in 2014, the Malaysian Airlines plane disappeared from the skies along with 239 people on board - including six Australians.

They included Queensland couples Catherine and Robert Lawton as well as Mary and Rodney Burrows.

Many wild theories have since followed, but now a flight holding pattern - detected through an invisible trail - may finally provide closure for those who lost loved ones.

In Wednesday night's Sky News documentary MH370: The Final Search, a number of aviation leaders stated it was deliberate sabotage from senior flight Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah - and said a 22-minute-long holding pattern proved it.

'My theory has always been that it was the captain who is responsible …probably as a political protest,' aviation writer and former Qantas Captain Mike Glynn said.

In Wednesday night's Sky News documentary MH370: The Final Search, a number of aviation experts
stated their belief it was deliberate sabotage from senior flight Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah

On March 8 in 2014, the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 disappeared from the skies with 239 people on board

To support his claim, Mr Glynn pointed to the 'holding pattern' on MH370 from 3.12am onwards.

A holding pattern is where a plane holds a particular flight path while awaiting approval to land, but in this case it was done mid-flight.

He said there was 'no reason' for the aircraft to engage in the pattern mid-flight, before adding there is a 'possibility' it was the timeframe Mr Shah used as a 'form of negotiation.'

Australian Danica Weeks, whose husband Paul was on board the flight, said the 22-minute holding pattern revelation was 'overwhelming' and that Captain Shah 'must've been talking to someone… it's just a complete cover up.'

Mr Glynn went on to claim Captain Shah, a married father of three, was enraged after Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s Opposition Leader at the time of the crash in 2014, was convicted of sodomy the day before MH370 disappeared.

Shah was said to be an avid supporter of Ibrahim, and the pilot's Facebook account was also labelled a 'treasure trove' of political activity and anti-government sentiment.

Leading aviation safety investigator and retired pilot, John Cox, also said the demise of MH370 was no accident.

Author and journalist Ean Higgins agreed, stating Mr Shah had enough motivation if he wanted to take the 'drastic action.'

The pilot did have a supporter in Malaysia Airlines Crisis Director Fuad Sharuji, who expressed his doubt over a possible plane hijack.

The final point of control tower contact with flight MH370 almost eight years ago was over the South China Sea, the location where the search first launched following the disappearance, which generated international headlines.

However, it soon became apparent the plane had made its way back in the direction of Malaysia.

The aircraft then flew over the Malay peninsula, went around the island of Penang and up the Malacca Strait and eventually over the southern Indian Ocean.

Mr Glynn went on to state the use of Weak Signal Propagation Report (WSPR), could help locate the final remains of the plane.

The modern technology is a network of signals that use amateur or hand radios, and has been in use since 2009.

The pilot believes MH370 may have been tracked by WSPR - and that could pinpoint where the remains are.

'It is a game changer,' he said.

Mahmoud Ezzat, who served as the acting leader of the Muslim Brotherhood for several years, has been sentenced to life in prison for inciting violence and supplying firearms during the 2013 Egyptian protests.

The court ruling comes months after Ezzat was detained during a raid on an apartment in Cairo. and marks the latest crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood since it was removed from power in a coup d’état.

The case focused on charges of inciting violence and providing supporters with firearms amid violence outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in 2013, with Ezzat’s legal team dismissing the prosecution as being based on “false political charges.”

Previously, Ezzat was sentenced to both life in prison and the death penalty in a separate trial over his alleged role in the 2013 protests. However, as he was absent from the original court case, as per Egyptian law, he will now face a retrial.

Ezzat, under his official title of Acting General Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, had been an influential figure in the group since former leader Mohamed Badie was detained.

Both of Ezzat’s predecessors, Badie and Mohammed Mahdi Akef, were arrested on similar charges. Badie is serving seven life sentences and awaiting execution, having been sentenced to death, while Akef died from cancer ahead of a retrial in Cairo, following a successful attempt to overturn his conviction.

The Muslim Brotherhood lost control of Egypt in 2013, just a year after winning the presidential election, when the military conducted a coup d’état and placed members of the party under house arrest, sparking widespread protests. Since then, the organization has been banned and declared a terrorist group in the country, allowing authorities to detain dozens of Muslim Brotherhood officials and supporters.

Protestors take to streets in Kyrgyzstan to demand ban against 'bride kidnapping'
after young woman murdered by her captor

Bishkek's police chief has been fired after hundreds of locals demonstrated outside the Interior Ministry in the Kyrgyz capital protesting about the killing of a 27-year-old woman, murdered during a so-called 'bride kidnapping.'

The practice, also known as 'bridenapping,' used to be a widespread phenomenon in the Caucasus and in several Asian nations. Nowadays, most abductions are purely ceremonial and a tribute to previous tradition. However, in Kyrgyzstan, there are still some cases where the bride has not consented.

Kyrgyzstan is 90% Muslim.

On April 5, a 27-year-old woman named Aizada Kanatbekovwas kidnapped by a group of unknown assailants. Following an investigation, the police quickly identified the would-be groom as Zamirbek Tenizbayev. Later that evening, they reached Tenizbayev by phone, who replied that he intended to marry Kanatbekova. He then turned off the device, and the police failed to find him.

Two days later, the bodies of Kanatbekova and her captor were found in a field near Bishkek in the suspect's car. According to the local cops, Tenizbayev strangled her because of a verbal altercation, after which he committed suicide.

A video of the moment she was captured was later published online, showing three men wrestle her into a car while passers-by ignore the crime.

A day later, following the news that the kidnapped woman had been killed, about 300 people protested outside the Interior Ministry in the capital, demanding that the law be changed and that the tradition – known locally as 'ala kachuu' – be made illegal. According to the media, the demonstrators chanted slogans such as "resign," "shame," and "how many of us have to die to stop kidnapping us?"

In response, recently-elected president Sadyr Japarov said that he would take the Kanatbekova case under his personal control. The country's interior ministry revealed that 43 police officers have been disciplined due to the negligent investigation, with the capital's police chief and deputy head being fired.

Four accomplices of the apparent killer have been detained.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of bride kidnapping, causing some to demand a complete end to the practice. According to political analyst Azhdar Kurtov, the capture of women on the street has become more common in the years since Kyrgyz independence.

"In Kyrgyzstan, in conditions of extreme poverty and rampant nationalism, many customs from the past have received a new life," he told the newspaper Izvestia.

During the Soviet Union, when local traditions were repressed in favor of a pan-soviet identity, bride abduction was far less common. When the USSR collapsed, the countries began to regain their national characteristics.

According to Mikhail Romanenko, a specialist in the culture of the Caucasus, the tradition has persisted until the modern-day because of 'kalym,' a ransom payment given by the groom to the bride's parents, similar to a dowry.

Russia’s first Muslim pole dancing school: Tatar woman starts teaching classes

A Tatar woman in the Russian city of Kazan has opened the country’s first pole-dancing school for Muslims. While it’s been backed by the imam of a nearby mosque, the initiative has caused controversy in the mainly Islamic region.

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, a Muslim-majority republic around 800km east of Moscow. The region is known for its rich cultural history, combining Russian traditions with Tatar heritage.

Speaking to local news station Tatarstan 24, Leysan Dauletova revealed that she discovered a gap in the market while feeling uncomfortable in dance studios that often had men in the building, such as fathers picking up their children.

Dauletova’s new studio has rules which make it quite unique – closed windows, a complete ban on filming, no profanity in songs, and absolutely no visits by men.

"I came to the conclusion that I wanted to create comfortable conditions for Muslim women, who can practice without prying eyes," she explained, noting that most of the students want to practice to impress their husbands.

The studio, located across from a mosque, has been approved entirely by its imam. Ansar Hazrat Miftakhov, head of the local Al-Marjani mosque, says there is absolutely no reason a Muslim woman can’t engage in pole dancing.

"They said we want to show this to our husbands so that our husbands don’t look at other women," the imam explained. "And we said, of course, it is possible. This does not contradict Islam."

The idea hasn’t been universally accepted, however. The school has been slammed by the Union of Muslim Women of Russia and Tatarstan, a local organization. According to its head, Nailya Ziganshina, there is no need for a woman to "wriggle around," and a husband should love her soul.

"There are no problems with childbirth in a Muslim family. All families have many children, all have five, eight, ten children," she told radio station Moscow Talks. "There is no need to teach Muslim women any other arts and call it sports."

That's hilarious! Apparently, Muslim women are good at something!

Islam has been prominent in Tatarstan for over 1,000 years, remaining the dominant religion in the region throughout Bulgar rule, the Mongol invasion, and the Khanate of Kazan. During the Soviet Union, when all religions were repressed, the number of adherents fell. However, nowadays, more than half of all residents profess to be Muslim.

Dead Billionaire Being Sued for Pharmaceutical Price-Fixing and Other Stuff

Canadian billionaire couple die in suspicious way, bodies found ‘hanging side by side next to pool'

The owner of the Canadian pharmaceutical giant Apotex, Barry Sherman, and his wife were found dead at their home under suspicious circumstances. Reports say their bodies were “hanging side by side” next to their pool.

The bodies of Bernard Sherman, 75, also known as Barry, and his wife, Honey, 70, were found around Friday noon in their mansion in the North York district of Toronto by the police, who arrived in answer to a 911 call.

Police did not say who made the call, while the National Post reported that the bodies were initially discovered by a real estate agent, who came to the couple’s luxury mansion, which is currently up for sale.

The paper also said that the bodies were “found hanging side by side next to their indoor pool,” something that other Canadian outlets later repeated, citing police sources. Local media also said police were looking into whether it was a murder-suicide.

Meanwhile, none of these facts have been confirmed by police, who have remained tight-lipped about the case. A police detective, Brandon Price, described the deaths only as “suspicious.”

However, he also said that the police are not treating the case as homicide. The detective added that the police were still trying to “determine if there is foul play involved or not,” as reported by CBC. Later on Friday, police also issued a statement, in which it particularly pointed out that they are not looking for any suspect.

Police also said that there appeared to be no “forced entry” or any intrusion into the couple’s house. “Forensics need to be done and post-mortems on the bodies, but at this stage it appears there was no forced entry and no evidence of anybody else in the house,” a police source told the National Post.

Sherman was a successful businessman and one of the richest people in Canada. His wealth amounted to about $3 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which lists Sherman as the 12th richest Canadian businessman.

Apotex, which was founded and owned by Sherman, is one of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies. It sells 260 types of generic drugs in more than 115 countries, while its medicines are used to fill over 89 million prescriptions a year in Canada alone, Forbes reports, adding that the company’s revenues account for $ 1.5 billion. It also produces non-prescription drugs, disposable plastics and fine chemicals for medical use.

Sherman had the image of someone with a happy family life. He and his wife recently welcomed a new grandchild, according to the Canadian Globe and Mail. The couple also had four children. The family was also known for its philanthropy.

The Shermans made numerous multimillion-dollar donations to hospitals, schools and charities and had buildings named in their honor. They also had close ties to the Jewish community as they donated roughly $50 million to the United Jewish Appeal - a Jewish philanthropic umbrella organization that later changed its name to the Jewish Federations of North America.

However, Sherman was also involved in several scandals. In October, his company Apotex was hit with a lawsuit filed by 45 US states and the District of Columbia. The states’ attorneys accused Apotex, along with 17 other companies and their subsidiaries, of price-fixing.

The states said the companies divided customers for their drugs among themselves, agreeing that each company would have a certain percentage of the market. The companies also agreed on price increases in advance, the states added. The price of such drugs as doxycycline hyclate skyrocketed from $20 to $1,849 in less than in a year in 2014. A total of 15 medicines were listed in the lawsuit.

For years, the family has been plagued by another scandal. In 2007, three of his cousins and the widow of the fourth filed a lawsuit against Sherman arguing that he owed them $1 billion in damages and a 20 percent stake in Apotex. Sherman acquired the company named Empire Laboratories – the predecessor of Apotex – from his uncle after the death of the latter. His uncle’s children then claimed that he should have paid them royalties over a 15-year period as well as give them a right to obtain employment through the company and a 5 percent stake in its shares.

The initial cousins’ lawsuit was dismissed by a court in 2015. It was, however, reinstated in 2016 but, in September, an Ontario court once again ruled in favor of Sherman and his cousins then appealed the decision.
