Katy Thorne is quite right in saying this, but Britain is already far down the road to accepting and imposing Sharia blasphemy laws. Otherwise, Hamit Coskun would never have been arrested or brought to trial at all.
Note also that Thorne assures the court that Coskun did not “exhort hate” against Muslims. This is important, as Muslims and their leftist allies always charge that any criticism of Islam, jihad violence, or Sharia oppression, no matter how accurate and no matter how restrained, constitutes “hate.” And “hate” is a grave offense in Western societies today. Yet genuinely hateful Islamic preachers who teach the Qur’anic passages about Jews being apes and pigs and that unbelievers are the most vile of created beings will never run afoul of British authorities. Now, why is that?

Convicting a man for burning the Koran would be “tantamount to reintroducing a blasphemy law”, his defence team has told a court.
Hamit Coskun appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after he allegedly shouted abusive slogans about Islam while burning the holy book outside the Turkish consulate in Knightsbridge, London, on 13 February.
The 50-year-old denies a religiously aggravated public order offence of using disorderly behaviour and an alternative charge of using disorderly behaviour “within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress”.
Katy Thorne, defending, said at his trial that the prosecution pursuing the case against Coskun was “seeking to introduce a law unknown to this land, namely blasphemy in relation to Islam”.
Blasphemy laws were abolished in England and Wales in 2008, with Scotland following suit in 2021.
Ms Thorne told the court that burning the Koran “cannot be a criminal offence”.
“To render such an act a criminal offence is tantamount to reintroducing a blasphemy law in relation to Islam, rendering the Koran a specially protected object in the UK, where a flag or another book would not be, and rendering trenchant or offensive criticism of Islam a criminal offence, is also akin to reinstating an offence of blasphemy,” she said in her written argument.
“People must be free to exercise their religious or non-religious beliefs and to manifest those beliefs in whatever non-violent way they choose, and any curtailing by the state of that freedom must be absolutely necessary in a democratic society.”
She said Coskun “did not exhort hate” to those following Islam, but protested “outside the Turkish Consulate, a political institution, which provided further evidence he was not seeking to persuade others to dislike Islam, but express his personal criticism of Turkey and its stance on Islam”.
Ms Thorne added: “His protest was specifically political and thus… requires the highest protection of freedom of speech.”…

A judge ruled that a Pakistani drug dealer could not be deported as it would be “unduly harsh” on his son, whom he teaches “about Islam, about Pakistani culture and his own upbringing”.
The Home Office ordered the deportation of Muhammad Asif Karim, 43, after he was convicted seven times for 21 offences, including supplying the Class A drugs heroin and cocaine, serving a four-year jail term. However, the foreign criminal appealed to the Upper Tribunal—an immigration and asylum court—and the judge agreed that under the right to a family life, set out by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, he should be permitted to stay in the UK to be with his son.
This is despite the court hearing that the child is “largely brought up by his white British mother”. The boy gave evidence that his father “is able to talk to him about Islam, about Pakistani culture and his own upbringing”. The case is the latest in a long list where foreign criminals or illegal immigrants have been allowed to resist deportation and stay in Britain by appealing to the courts.
The court heard that Karim, who has lived in the UK for 26 years, had avoided criminality for 10 years and enjoyed a “parental relationship” with his son. The tribunal accepted that the talks between the pair were “fundamental” to the boy’s identity. In response, the Home Office argued that that was nothing but “conjecture”, unsupported by corroboration from a social worker or psychologist.
Is the judge unaware that there are phones, internet, even post offices in both Pakistan and Britain?The tribunal ruled: “Although there is a particularly strong public interest in removing someone who habitually committed crimes over a 14-year period, his last offence was committed over 10 years ago and he has complied with all probation and rehabilitation requirements, as well as the reporting conditions imposed on him by the Home Office,” it said.
“He has throughout the relevant period suffered from significant and debilitating mental ill-health, and although this was not a factor that the first-tier tribunal thought significant, it is right to note that there has been an inordinate delay – over 10 years – on the part of the Secretary of State in effecting this deportation.
“There was also evidence that he was himself a survivor of violence, trauma and criminality, all of which had played a role in his troubled youth.”…

Vandals on Friday night defaced five Jewish sites, including France’s Holocaust Memorial, in the Marais district in central Paris with green paint.
Citing police sources, German channel RTL listed the Belleville Synagogue, the Tournelles Synagogue, the Israeli “Chez Marianne” restaurant and the Agoudas Hakehilos synagogue as the remaining four targets.
“I am deeply disgusted by these heinous acts targeting the Jewish community,” French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau tweeted in the wake of the vandalism.
Surveillance footage from the Holocaust Memorial reviewed by law enforcement showed a man dressed in black spray-painting the building at 4:35 a.m., according to RTL.
No arrests were made, according to AFP, though the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said that a religious motive for the incidents is being investigated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the attacks were “a direct result of the rampant incitement against Jews in France.”…
