Hundreds of riot police officers have been deployed to the streets of the western French city of Nantes following violent clashes that erupted in the city earlier after a young man was gunned down by police.

Videos posted on social media show heavy police patrols, as well as scores of police minivans, moving along the streets of Nantes on Wednesday. On many occasions, police effectively blocked entire streets in apparent attempts to maintain security.

The night before, those areas witnessed massive riots, during which the angry mob was setting cars alight and throwing Molotov cocktails during clashes with police.

The outbreak of violence was provoked by the death of a 22-year-old man, identified as Aboubakar F., who was shot dead on Tuesday night as he tried to avoid a police inspection and flee the scene. Even though the situation has largely calmed down, by around 3:00 in the morning, additional police forces were apparently sent to the city.

The locals, however, are apparently not pleased to see the massive police presence. The officers have been repeatedly pelted with various projectiles by the locals right from the windows of the nearby buildings, as well as by groups of angry locals in the streets. Police responded with tear gas as tensions seemed to be growing once again.

At some streets, the officers were met with angry chants and booing by the crowd.

The city is still recovering from the unrest that engulfed it on Tuesday night. Piles of garbage can be still seen burning near the overthrown dustbins on some streets.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor of Nantes, Jean-Pierre Sennes, told the French media that the man who was killed by police was in fact wanted for theft and membership in criminal gangs. He also allegedly used a fake identity of Mamadou D, as he was also on the wanted list for robbery since June 15.

He was also previously known to police as he committed about a dozen offenses, including a gang robbery, burglary and criminal conspiracy, Le Parisien reports. His vehicle was also allegedly used in drug trafficking.

And yet, he had so many friends!

Three Migrants Sentenced for Molotov Attack on Swedish Synagogue

The New Normal - Growing Antisemitism in Sweden

UPI -- A district court in Sweden sentenced three men for hate crimes for carrying out a Molotov cocktail attack on a synagogue in Gothenburg in December 2017.

Two of the men, aged 24 years old and 22 years old, were sentenced to two years in prison, while third 18-year-old was sentenced to 15 months in prison after the court determined the attack was a hate crime.

"The crime had the clear goal of threatening, harming, and violating members of the synagogue and the Jewish community more generally," the court wrote in its judgement. "The crime therefore had a hate motive."

The attack took place during a period of increased violence against Jews in Sweden after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Also, the growing numbers of Muslim migrants mean an automatic growth in antisemitism in Sweden and most of the rest of the EU.

One of the men, a stateless Palestinian citizen, was ordered to be deported from Sweden after serving his sentence and won't be permitted to return until 2028.

The other two, a Palestinian and a Syrian citizen, had refugee status and permanent residence, so they couldn't be deported.

The three men were convicted for acting as part of a group of masked individuals who hurled Molotov cocktails at a community center attached to a synagogue in Gothenburg, as it hosted a youth event with as many as 30 attendees.

The building didn't catch fire and no one was injured in the attack, as police said people fled to safety in the basement.

Is Molenbeek Becoming a No-Go Zone?

Two police cars were torched in the mainly Muslim Brussels area of Molenbeek on Friday night, local media reported. One of the cars was burned in the street where key suspect in the Paris attacks Salah Abdeslam was arrested earlier.

The first car was burnt in Quatre-Vents Street where Abdeslam was detained in March this year, RTL Belgian TV reported. The vehicle caught fire shortly after the two officers had left it, the Belgium RTBF channel reported.

Firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze. The police vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire, media said.

Shortly after the first incident, police received a call saying that another police car had been torched near De Roovere Avenue, next to a police station.

The vehicle was also severely damaged. RTL Belgium cited unconfirmed police reports, saying that a Molotov cocktail might have been thrown at the car. Le Soir newspaper suggested it was an arson attack, citing official sources.

An 18-year-old man was arrested shortly after both incidents.

Later, Belgian media wrote that a father living in De Roovere Avenue called an ambulance for his son, who had severely burned his hands. Belgian media theorized there might be a possible link between the incidents.

Molenbeek, a predominantly migrant area in Brussels, is often referred to as an “Islamist hotspot.” Paris attacks suspects, including brothers Brahim and Salah Abdeslam, Mohamed Abrini (also involved in the Brussels attacks), and the mastermind behind the attacks Abdelhamid Abaaoud grew up and lived in Molenbeek.

The district has witnessed repeated raids following the Paris and Brussels bombings.

Belgium is on high alert after the attacks in Brussels on March 22. The Belgian capital was hit by twin suicide bombings at Brussels Airport and Maelbeek Metro.

The Metro station was not far from the building housing the EU Commission and the Council of the European Union, as well as NATO’s headquarters.

How long before the police and fire fighters refuse to go into Molenbeek? That's a scary thought!
