Military Madness > An Iron Dome for America? Germany says no to 5% GDP for military; Danes say no to Greenland sale - see USA as a threat

Trump orders ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense for US

The president wants a “next-generation” system to protect the country from long-range attacks
Trump orders ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense for US

US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to develop a plan for a new integrated missile shield, arguing a potential sophisticated long-range aerial attack remains the “most catastrophic threat” to the country.

Trump on Monday tasked the defense secretary with creating the system in an executive order, dubbed ‘The Iron Dome for America.’

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth now has 60 days to hatch the plan to protect the US from “ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks from peer, near-peer, and rogue adversaries” and envision the new multi-layered missile shield.

“Over the past 40 years, rather than lessening, the threat from next-generation strategic weapons has become more intense and complex with the development by peer and near-peer adversaries of next-generation delivery systems and their own homeland integrated air and missile defense capabilities,” the executive order reads.

The directive mandates the creation of various features of the proposed missile shield, including the “development and deployment of proliferated space-based interceptors,” capable of shooting down incoming ballistic missiles during their boost phase, bolstering of the “underlayer and terminal-phase intercept capabilities,” as well as unspecified “capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch.”

Trump has repeatedly promised to create an Israeli-style integrated missile defense shield, yet it remains to be seen how exactly such an approach would work for the US, a country immensely larger than Israel.

While the order implies the plans should be incorporated into the next year’s budget, it does not provide any cost estimates on the ambitious program. Nor does it provide a timeframe on when exactly the missile shield should materialize.

Israel’s Iron Dome system is primarily designed to intercept small crude unguided rockets, drones and artillery shells, while other weapons provide capabilities against other threats, such as sophisticated long-range ballistic and cruise missiles.

I can see the need for an iron dome around Washington, DC, and maybe NYC, and some military bases, but the cost of covering all the coasts and borders of America would be insane.

Having said that, Trump knows very well that if he doesn't order things that keep America's War Industry getting filthy rich, he will never live to see the end of his term. Consequently, the Iron Dome scheme, the raising of NATO spending to 5% of GDP, etc.

Germany rejects Trump’s military spending demand

Berlin will not spend almost half of its federal budget on defense, Boris Pistorius has said
Germany rejects Trump’s military spending demand

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said that Berlin simply cannot afford to spend 5% of its GDP on the military, as US President Donald Trump is demanding from NATO member states.

The need to invest more in defense is “undisputed,” but there are limits to what Germany can do, Pistorius pointed out in an interview with Tagesspiegel newspaper on Saturday.

He explained that “5% of our GDP would correspond to 42% of the federal budget. That would be almost every second euro spent by the federal government, €230 billion. We could neither afford that nor spend that.”

“The competition for even higher percentages distracts from the actual issue at hand. It is crucial that we explain to our citizens what threats we face and show them the best possible way to protect ourselves,” the minister argued.

However, he acknowledged that “Germany will have to spend more on its defense in the future, even more than the 2% of its GDP now achieved by this government.”

Trump, who has long criticized Washington’s European allies for not contributing enough to NATO, voiced the idea of raising the bloc’s spending goal during a press conference in early January, before his inauguration.

“They can all afford it, but they should be at 5%, not 2%,” he insisted, expressing frustration that “Europe is in for a tiny fraction of the money that we are in” when it comes to investment in defense.

But Donald, most of that money comes back to the US War Industry. Surely you must understand that!

Previously, Trump warned that under his leadership, the US would not defend NATO countries that fail to meet their financial commitments.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda fully backed the US President’s 5% goal during an interview with Newsweek on Thursday.

“You can never feel safe living in this part of the world because we have this neighbor and we will still have it after one hundred or two hundred years,” Nauseda said, referring to Russia.

The more you build up militarily, the less safe you should feel.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected allegations his country was planning aggression against NATO as “nonsense” and “utter rubbish.” Such claims are made by Western politicians to deceive their constituents and justify increased spending on defense and aid to Kiev amid the conflict with Moscow, in his view. “In Ukraine, we are just protecting ourselves,” Putin insisted.

Don't dismiss that last sentence as absurd even though it sounds that way. NATO moving into Ukraine is a serious threat to the security of Russia. It's also a broken promise and a deliberate provocation of war.

Danish citizens increasingly see US as a ‘threat’ – poll

Danes consider America to be a greater danger that North Korea or Iran, a survey has suggested
NATO state’s citizens increasingly see US as a ‘threat’ – poll

Almost half of Danes surveyed consider the US a “threat” to their country, a YouGov poll has suggested.

And they don't even read my blog...

The YouGov survey, the results of which were published by the Guardian on Friday, was undertaken amid growing tensions between Copenhagen and Washington over US President Donald Trump’s proposal to make Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, part of America.

According to the poll, 46% of Danes consider the US to be either “a very big threat” or “a fairly big threat.”

The figure suggests that people living in the NATO and EU member state are more concerned about the US than they are about North Korea or Iran, deemed a threat by 44% and 40% or respondents, respectively.

However, Russia continues to top the list of the fears of the Danish public, with 86% of those surveyed calling it a danger to their country.

As part of the same poll, 78% of respondents said they would oppose Greenland being sold to America, with 72% insisting that the decision about joining the US should be made by the 57,000 residents of the Arctic island rather than Denmark.

Another survey conducted by the Danish pollster Verian earlier this week suggested that only 6% of Greenlanders want to become Americans. It contradicted the results of an earlier study by the US company Patriot Polling, which claimed that 57% of the people on the island supported joining the US.

One or both of those polls have a very large margin of error!

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview on Sirius XM’s The Megyn Kelly Show on Thursday, that Trump’s aspiration to acquire Greenland is “not a joke.”

“I know it is a delicate topic for Denmark, but it is again a national interest item for the US,” he said.

I don't think it's a national issue!

The Arctic region will become “critical” for shipping in the coming years and Washington needs control over Greenland in order to prevent China from establishing itself on the world’s largest island, he claimed.

It is the world's biggest island, but I'm thinking 99% of it is uninhabited.

Islam - Current Day - More than 1000 Rockets from Gaza into Israel, Including 15 at Nuclear Site; Hezbollah Bankers Labelled Terrorists

Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired over 100 rockets at Israel following the destruction of a residential tower block. Israeli media reported that a building in the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon has been hit.

According to regional media, at least 130 rockets have been fired from Gaza on Tuesday evening, targeting Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities. Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, launched “hundreds” of rockets, the Gaza-based Shehab news agency reported.

Palestinians said the barrage is a response to the destruction of Hanadi tower, a residential complex in Gaza, by Israeli bombardment earlier in the day.

“If the enemy persists and bombs civilian towers, Tel Aviv will be on a date with a harsh missile strike that exceeds what happened in Ashkelon,” Al-Qassam spokesman Abu Ubayda said on Tuesday, according to local media.

Hamas claimed to have killed two Israelis and injured many more in rocket strikes on Ashkelon and Ashdod earlier in the day. Meanwhile, the ministry of health in Hamas-run Gaza reported that 28 people have been killed – including 10 children – and 152 were injured in Israeli bombings as of Tuesday afternoon.

Israeli Channel 12 showed black smoke billowing over Tel Aviv, while a photo of a burning bus has also made rounds on social media. The bus was empty when it was hit.

Another rocket reportedly hit the suburb of Rishon Letzion, further south. All flights have been suspended at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport, and planes are being diverted to Cyprus, the Civil Aviation Authority said.

The government in Tel Aviv has confirmed that two people were killed in Ashkelon and more than 30 wounded across southern Israel, as the Iron Dome missile defense apparently struggled to cope with the sheer volume of rockets from Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that air strikes against Gaza will be increased in “both strength and frequency” due to the rocket barrage that began Monday.

Hamas and other groups in the Gaza Strip began launching rockets after Monday’s blaze outside the Al-Aqsa mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. A tree caught fire amid clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians protesting evictions from the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

How do they manage to get and hide hundreds of rockets? I thought Israeli security was better than that.

US labels seven Lebanese nationals as specially designated global terrorists

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against seven people it claims are linked to Hezbollah and its financial wing, Al-Qard al-Hassan, labelling all of the individuals as “specially designated global terrorists”.

In a statement released on the Treasury website on Tuesday, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced it has blacklisted seven people for their alleged connections to Hezbollah and Al-Qard al-Hassan (AQAH).

The sanctions target Ibrahim Ali Daher, who was described in the statement as serving as the chief of Hezbollah’s Central Finance Unit, and six others, who are accused of using personal bank accounts to cover up the Iran-backed movement’s activities.

“From the highest levels of Hezbollah’s financial apparatus to working level individuals, Hezbollah continues to abuse the Lebanese financial sector and drain Lebanon’s financial resources at an already dire time,” the US Treasury said in a statement.

Such actions demonstrate Hezbollah’s disregard for financial stability, transparency, or accountability in Lebanon.

The US has previously accused AQAH of being established to act as a “cover” for the financial activities of Hezbollah and allowing the group to present a front on the international financial system, sanctioning it in 2007.

The individuals accused have not publicly commented on the sanctions and Hezbollah has not responded to Treasury’s allegations.

Hamas’ military wing says it launched 15 rockets near
Israel’s Dimona nuclear reactor site

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has said it fired 15 rockets towards the Israeli town of Dimona, near the country’s main nuclear reactor, after Israel pledged a tough response against Palestinian militants.

The group announced its latest rocket attack from Gaza towards Israel in a statement on Wednesday, adding that another 50 rockets had been fired towards the city of Ashdod.

Unverified footage posted to social media purported to show the rockets being fired towards Dimona. No injuries have been reported.

On Wednesday, rocket warning sirens sounded in Dimona, Ashdod, and other Israeli areas, including Ashkelon, Yavne, and Beersheba, according to the Times of Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said “a barrage of rockets” had been fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Wednesday afternoon, having earlier reported that more than 1,050 were launched in the past 38 hours alone.

The airstrikes are the latest outbursts of violence amid a serious escalation between Israeli forces and Palestinian Hamas militants this week.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on Wednesday that the IDF would continue its air strikes on alleged Hamas targets in Gaza until there is “complete silence.”

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 53 people have died from the attacks in Gaza this week, including 14 children, while 320 people have been injured.

Meanwhile, six people are reported to have been killed in Israel.

I wonder if they knew which way the winds were blowing? A direct hit releasing radiation into a southeast wind could have annihilated Gaza. A west or southwest wind could have directed the radiation into diurnal winds flowing up or down the Jordan Valley. If upward, it could easily have reached Amman, Jordan.

Iran's Anti-Israel Aggression has Greatly Improved Israel's Standing in the Middle East

Russia backs off Syrian air defense after
Putin-Netanyahu meeting

Russia has reversed course and dropped plans to deliver advanced S-300 air-defense systems to Syria, a Kremlin spokesman said Friday.

The change followed a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Israel became concerned about the possible arrival of a new defense system in Syria after a wave of airstrikes on targets in Syrian by French, British and U.S. fighter planes in April. The airstrikes were retaliation for an alleged chemical weapons attack by Syria.

At least, that was the excuse.

Israel worried installation of the defense systems could upset the balance of power in Syria and could make Israeli aircraft penetration more difficult.

Supply lines in Syria, manned primarily by Iranian soldiers, have been a frequent target of Israeli airstrikes. A large attack occurred Wednesday and Thursday after Syrian troops, the Israeli armed forces say, fired a barrage of missiles into the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

The presence of the S-300 system could have complicated Israel's efforts, the Moscow Times reported Friday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there was never a formal plan to equip Syria with the systems, but Kremlin aide Vladirmir Kozhin said, "We're not discussing any deliveries of advanced new systems," and added the Syrian military "has everything it needs."

Last month, Russia hinted it might supply the materials to the Syrian regime.

So, remarkably, Russia appears to agree with Israel that is has a right to defend itself from the Iranian build-up of men and missiles by pre-emptive strikes within Syria. Both Syria and Iran are Russian allies. This must leave Putin in a very uncomfortable position. Nevertheless, it was the right thing to do.

Just as remarkable was the agreement by the EU that Israel was justified in its actions...

EU, British PM back Israel’s right to defend itself from Iranian strikes

UN secretary general urges 'immediate halt to all hostile acts and any provocative actions' as Security Council members refuse to call emergency meeting
By AFP and TOI STAFF

The European Union on Thursday backed Israel’s right to defend itself and called on “all regional actors to show restraint” after widespread strikes against Iranian targets in Syria, in response to Iranian rockets fired towards the Golan Heights.

“Reports about last night’s Iranian attacks against Israeli army posts from inside Syria to which Israel responded by striking against Iranian targets in Syria are extremely worrying,” the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.

“As the EU has said repeatedly, Israel has the right to defend itself,” the statement added.

“At the same time, we call on all regional actors to show restraint and avoid any escalation, which could further undermine regional stability.”

Stability? What stability?

British Prime Minister Theresa May also said she “strongly supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Iranian aggression” in a call Thursday evening with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, her office said.

A spokesperson said May condemned the Iranian rocket attacks against Israeli forces and reiterated Downing Street’s earlier call on Iran to refrain from any further attacks and for calm on all sides.

Both leaders were said to agree it was “vital for the international community to continue working together to counter Iran’s destabilizing regional activity, and for Russia to use its influence in Syria to prevent further Iranian attacks.”

Netanyahu’s office said he expressed his appreciation for May’s position.

Iranian forces fired some 20 rockets at northern Israeli military bases from southern Syria just after midnight Wednesday. The IDF said it suffered no casualties, either on the ground or in the air, and that no rockets fired from Syria  hit Israeli territory.

The IDF hit over 50 targets in Syria in overnight strikes in response, including Iranian intelligence sites, logistic centers, weapons depots, and military bases operated by the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force.

The exchange was the largest-ever direct clash between the Iranian forces and the IDF, and appeared to be the largest exchange involving Israel in Syria since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for an “immediate halt to all hostile acts” in the Middle East.

In his statement, Guterres also called on the Security Council to “remain actively seized of the matter and shoulder its responsibilities” under the UN Charter.

“The Secretary-General urges an immediate halt to all hostile acts and any provocative actions to avoid a new conflagration in the region already embroiled in terrible conflicts with immense suffering of civilians,” a spokesman for Guterres said.

But, amazingly, no condemnation of Israel. The UN rarely misses an opportunity like this.

None of the Security Council’s 15 members were ready to call an emergency meeting on the situation — which has prompted calls for restraint from the international community.

When asked if they would call an emergency meeting, ambassadors from Poland, Russia, France and Britain all responded: “Not at this point.”

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, sent letters to the Security Council and the secretary-general calling for condemnation of “Iran’s acts of aggression.” He also asked the Security Council to “demand that Iran remove its military presence from Syria.”

Why not throw a 'Hail Mary', or two, while the UN is on its heels.

So, Putin standing off, the EU approves, the UN standing off, and even at least one Gulf State supports Israel. No doubt most do in this anti-Iran endeavour, but are reluctant to say so. Not Bahrain...

Bahrain backs Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria
In rare endorsement of IDF operation, FM Al-Khalifa says any country in the region has the 'right to defend itself'
By RAPHAEL AHREN

In an extremely rare expression of support for an Israeli military operation, the foreign minister of Bahrain on Thursday said Israel’s overnight attack on Iranian targets in Syria was legitimate in light of Tehran’s increasing aggression.

“As long as Iran continues the current status quo of its forces and rockets operating in the region, any country — including Israel — has the right to defend itself by eliminating the source of danger,” Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa posted on his Twitter account, writing in Arabic.

Responding to missiles fired into Israel from Syria, the Israeli Air Force overnight launched a major operation against Iranian targets in the country, wiping out much of Tehran’s military infrastructure there, officials said.

The missiles, which according to Israel were fired by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ al-Quds Force, were targeting forward operating bases on the Golan Heights, a territory much of the international community considers illegally occupied by Israel.

At least 23 troops were killed during the Israeli retaliatory strike, 18 them non-Syrians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Non-Syrians would be Iranians!

Earlier on Thursday, the UK and Germany condemned the Islamic Republic for shooting rockets at Israeli bases and called on the two sides not to escalate the situation.

“The United Kingdom condemns in the strongest terms the Iranian rocket attacks against Israeli forces. We strongly support Israel’s right to defend itself,” Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said.

“We urge Iran to refrain from further actions which will only lead to increased instability in the region. It is crucial to avoid any further escalations, which would be in no one’s interest,” he added. “We also continue to call on Russia to use its influence to press those in Syria to cease their destabilizing activity and work towards a broader political settlement.”

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Berlin said Germany was “deeply concerned” by Iran’s rocket attacks on Israeli army outposts.

“These attacks are a severe provocation that we most strongly condemn. We have always emphasized that Israel has the right to defend itself,” the spokesperson said.

“At the same time, it is key that the situation not escalate any further,” she added. “This particularly means we must do everything we can to finally arrive at a sustainable political solution to the conflict in Syria – it is needed to end the suffering of the Syrian population, and to not further threaten stability in the entire region.”

Meanwhile Russia, a staunch ally of Iran and Syria, called “for restraint from both sides.”

Moscow is “concerned” by the tension, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said. “We have established contacts with all parties and we call for restraint from all parties. It’s very worrying and a source of concern. We have to work to ease the tension.”

Four of the 20 projectiles launched at Israel were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and the rest fell in Syria, according to the IDF.

Although one apparently fell in Lebanon.

The rockets included both Grad and Fajr-5 models, according to the military. The IDF said the initial missile barrage was launched by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ al-Quds Force.

It appeared to be the first time Israel attributed an attack directly to Iran, which generally operates through proxies.

In all, the army said it carried out approximately 50 retaliatory raids against IRGC targets, including intelligence centers, weapons depots, storage facilities, observation posts, and logistics centers in Syria, as well as the rocket launcher that carried out the initial attack.

The overnight exchange was the largest-ever direct clash between the Iranian and Israeli militaries, and appeared to be the largest exchange involving Israel in Syria since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

The military said it also targeted a number of Syrian air defense systems — SA-5, SA-2, SA-22 and SA-17 batteries — that had fired at Israeli planes, despite the military’s Arabic-language spokesperson explicitly warning earlier that “any Syrian involvement will be met with the utmost severity.

In the days and weeks before the Iranian barrage, defense officials repeatedly warned that Israel would respond aggressively to any attack from Syrian territory.

Tehran has repeatedly vowed revenge after the T-4 army base in Syria was struck in an air raid — widely attributed to Israel — on April 9, killing at least seven members of the IRGC, including a senior officer responsible for the group’s drone program.

With all the non-intercepted rockets landing in Syria or Lebanon, the entire Middle East ought to be extremely worried that these fools should get their hands on nuclear weapons. God only knows where they might fall.
