Politics in Europe > Musical Chairs in Ukraine's Top Levels; Italy, France and Chechia not falling for US War Industry scam; EU blacklists Moldovan opposition

Is America setting the table to replace Zelenskyy with someone they have more control over?

New PM and US ambassador: What we know of Ukraine's government reshuffle

Europe

After weeks of speculation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a government reorganisation naming Defence Minister Rustem Umerov as the next US ambassador and economist Yulia Svyrydenko as prime minister. Svyrydenko played a key role in concluding a natural resources agreement with the United States giving Washington preferential access to swathes of Ukraine's mineral wealth.

Following weeks of rumours, President Volodymyr Zelensky this week unveiled a government reshuffle, replacing his prime minister and defence minister as he aims to inject fresh energy into his team, with no end in sight to the war.

Here are the main points to know about the shake-up, which comes as ceasefire talks with Russia stall and with the White House vowing to keep backing Kyiv.

PM with US ties

Ukraine's new prime minister will be Yulia Svyrydenko, an economy minister known for finalising a natural resources deal with the United States that nearly derailed ties between the countries.

"She was the key and the only person leading these negotiations. She managed to prevent them from unravelling," said Tymofiy Mylovanov, a former economy minister who worked with Svyrydenko.

She won the respect of US partners including senior US political leadership, analysts have said.

Are you sure it was respect she won?

"Trump and his administration are now a priority for Ukraine. Svyrydenko has proven herself there and will continue to do so," said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko.

Svyrydenko, 39, has earned the trust of Ukraine's business community for her handling of the country's wartime economy, President of the American Chamber of Commerce Andy Hunder said.

"We've had a transparent, trust-based and collaborative relationship," Hunder said.

New US ambassador

Zelensky has indicated that Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, who had taken part in negotiations with Russia, will be the next US ambassador.

"Ukraine needs more positive dynamics in relations with the United States and at the same time new steps in managing the defence sector of our state," Zelensky told Umerov in a meeting last week.

Trump has criticised the last administration's decision to send billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, but has authorised NATO members to make arms purchases on Kyiv's behalf.

Yes, from American  War Industry suppliers, with Europe doing all the purchasing. A thoroughly astonishing scam that highlights the utter stupidity in European governments.

Umerov's appointment "means only one thing. The key issue in bilateral relations between the US and Ukraine right now is weapons", Fesenko said.

"Arms supplies are the number one issue. The second issue is negotiations to end the war. Umerov has been involved in both," he added.

Outgoing prime minister, an unassuming technocrat, Denys Shmygal, will take over the defence ministry brief, Zelensky has said.

More control?

Zelensky's rivals have long accused him of seeking to consolidate power and some critical media say Svyrydenko's appointment marked the latest step in this trend.

She is seen as loyal to Andriy Yermak, the powerful head of Zelensky's office.

Ukrainska Pravda, a respected independent media outlet, published a report describing the moves as "the strengthening of the head of the presidential office – although it's hard to see how that's possible".

"It's obvious that the Presidential office's influence will increase," opposition lawmaker Mykola Kniazhytskyi told AFP.

"The authorities are pursuing further centralisation and refusing any dialogue," he added.

What now?

Svyrydenko has set her priorities as prime minister as strengthening the economy, scaling up arms production, and expanding support programs.

Fesenko said Shmygal's appointment as defence minister would likely see him "bring some order" to the ministry, which has previously been plagued by corruption scandals.

Shmygal, 49, was Ukraine's longest-serving prime minister.

Moving him to the defence ministry, a demotion on paper, gives Zelensky an experienced technocratic economist in a job that oversees the bulk of Ukraine's state cash flow.

The 2025 budget allocates 2.23 trillion hryvnias ($53.2 billion) for defence spending – about 26 percent of Ukraine's gross domestic product. The ministry has faced public criticism over poor organisation and procurement problems as Ukraine struggles to fend off a bigger and better-armed Russian military.

Lawmakers voted on Wednesday to officially dismiss the government and were set to approve new ministers the following day.

Political commentators have suggested that more changes in cabinet could follow, including at the energy ministry.

Italy won’t buy US arms for Ukraine – media

The funds that Rome could allocate are “practically non-existent,” according to La Stampa’s sources
Italy won’t buy US arms for Ukraine – media

Italy’s budget doesn’t allow it to participate in US President Donald Trump’s plan to supply American arms to Ukraine, the Italian newspaper La Stampa reports, citing anonymous sources.

On Monday, Trump authorized new weapons deliveries to Ukraine, given that European NATO members provide funding, calling it a “very big deal.”

La Stampa said in an article on Wednesday that the strategy of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has already agreed to purchase several Patriot surface-to-air missile systems for Ukraine, “will not be pursued by Italy.”

According to the paper’s sources, Rome will be opting out of the scheme “not only because our weapon systems already handed over to Kiev have other technological configurations, but above all because – unlike Germany – the budget that Italy can allocate to such an operation is practically non-existent.”

The only arms purchase from the US currently planned by Italy is the delivery of a batch of F35 fighter jets scheduled for the 2030s, the sources added.

Politico reported on Tuesday, citing two French officials, that Paris would not be purchasing US weapons for Kiev as France is looking to invest in its own defense industry to meet European security needs.

The same day, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told Publico outlet that Prague is also currently “not considering” joining the initiative. The country “is focusing on other… ways to help Ukraine,” he explained.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas earlier welcomed Trump’s pledge to send more weapons to Ukraine, but urged Washington to “share the burden” in terms of financing the deliveries. Washington, meanwhile, has threatened to impose secondary US tariffs of up to 100% on Russia’s trading partners unless progress toward a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev is made within 50 days.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that it is hard to predict how effective the weapons financing scheme would turn out due to Western Europe’s “emotional state bordering on inadequacy” over the Ukraine conflict. European NATO members appear to be ready “to spend countless amounts of money on purchasing weapons in order to further provoke the continuation of the war,” he said.

Continuation of the madness is more like it.

EU blacklists opposition figures in candidate country

The European Council has imposed sanctions on Moldovan individuals and entities close to exiled businessman Ilan Shor
EU blacklists opposition figures in candidate country

The European Council has imposed sanctions on seven individuals and three entities in Moldova linked to exiled opposition leader Ilan Shor. The new designations, announced on Tuesday, target the Israeli-born businessman’s “close associates,” who have allegedly attempted to destabilize the EU candidate country.

Shor, founder of the banned Euroskeptic SOR party and current leader of the Victory opposition bloc, fled Moldova in 2019 amid a massive bank fraud scandal. He was later stripped of his citizenship there and sentenced in absentia to a lengthy prison term.

He has maintained his innocence, insisting the charges are politically motivated. The EU sanctioned him in 2023, and he was granted Russian citizenship the following year.

The European Council has also blacklisted the Victory bloc itself, accusing it of spreading false information and buying votes. Two additional entities have been sanctioned over alleged election interference.

Those listed are subject to asset freezes and travel bans, and the sanctions prohibit any funds or economic resources from being made available to them. With the latest designations, such EU measures now apply to 23 individuals and five entities in Moldova.

In June, Chisinau witnessed violent clashes between riot police and Orthodox Christian protesters at an anti-LGBTQ rally.

While President Maia Sandu’s administration is pushing for closer ties with the EU, conservative and religious groups have voiced growing resistance to what they view as the foreign-backed imposition of liberal social norms.

Moldova, a former Soviet republic, has accelerated its EU and NATO integration efforts since Sandu’s election in 2020. However, her policies have increasingly come under fire at home, particularly over economic stagnation and the suppression of dissent.

Sandu has defended the crackdowns as necessary to combat alleged Russian influence, labeling opposition parties and media outlets as criminal actors.

Moscow, for its part, has dismissed all accusations of election interference as baseless and politically motivated.

Narco World > Canada's Most wanted captured in Italy; Seven Mafia operatives arrested in Montreal

Canada’s most wanted criminal arrested in Rome hideout

Canada’s most wanted fugitive has been arrested in Italy after more than a year at large.

Dave (Pik) Turmel, alleged by police to be the head of Quebec street gang Blood Family Mafia, was arrested in Rome on Thursday after local police were tipped off about his presence in the Italian capital.

Quebec City police are holding a news conference Friday afternoon about Turmel’s capture.

Police have sought the 29-year-old Turmel since July 2023 as part of an operation that began in February 2019 to counter an increase in violence linked to drug trafficking.

In a news release Friday, Italian authorities say police burst into a vacation home where a 29-year-old fugitive wanted in Canada gave himself up and handed police a fake passport.

The Bolo program, operated by a Canadian charity in partnership with the country’s police forces, lists Turmel as its No. 1 most wanted criminal, sought by Quebec City police for drug trafficking.

He is accused of forming an alliance with independent drug dealers leading a bloody turf war in Quebec City and the eastern part of the province against the Hells Angels.

Sweeping Italian mafia raids results in 7 arrests by Montreal police

Authorities in Montreal have arrested seven suspects in an organized crime sweep on Wednesday morning targeting the city’s Italian mafia.

Police say the individuals face various charges, including drug trafficking, possession of substances for the purpose of trafficking, and committing an offence for the benefit of a criminal organization.

The suspects are six men between the ages of 34 and 59, and one 44-year-old woman.

Police say 40 officers were involved in the operation.

All seven suspects are allegedly linked to what police called a “traditional Italian organized crime clan,” a release from the SPVM says.

The series of arrests took place in the LaSalle, Verdun and Brossard areas.

All seven suspects were expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

The raids, dubbed ‘Operation Americano’, were led by the Montreal police’s anti-gang unit.

Cmdr. Francis Renaud, head of the Montreal police’s organized crime section, said the operation would disrupt organized crime in the city’s LaSalle and Verdun neighbourhoods.

The investigation involved significant resources and included wiretaps, video footage and “day and night” surveillance.

He told reporters at police headquarters on Wednesday that Italian organized crime has traditionally been associated with Montreal’s Saint-Leonard neighborhood, so “we just hit a little sector that goes underneath the radar a lot,” he said.

Renaud said organized crime in that area is different because traditional Mafia work with bikers and other gangs that would have previously been considered rivals. “They’re doing business, dealing with partners from other organized groups that back in the day we would say were enemies, but they’re not enemies anymore.”

He said the group targeted doesn’t sell drugs at the street level, but allegedly works with a network of resellers as a kind of wholesaler.

While the police operation likely struck a blow to the organized crime network in parts of the city, authorities say more people would be found to fill the place of those who were arrested, forcing police to start a new round of investigations.

“Of course they will find somebody else to replace those guys if those guys stay inside,” he said. “It’s our job to (monitor) the intel and see who is coming in to take the place, and do the exact same thing again.”

The investigation into the group began in 2023, and has already resulted in seizures of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, guns and $2.2 million in cash during raids last year, according to authorities. Three people were previously arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to 10.

Migrants on the Move > 612 migrants rescued, 18 bodies recovered in Med; 6 migrants dead, 40 missing, 10 rescued off Lampedusa; 46% increase in English Channel migrants in 2 years

Tunisia rescues 612 migrants, recovers 18 bodies in overnight operations

Africa

Tunisia's national guard rescued 612 migrants and recovered 18 bodies off its Mediterranean coast, following multiple boat capsizings in the Sfax region. The rescued people, all from sub-Saharan African countries and including women and children, were attempting to reach Europe.

Tunisia's national guard said on Monday its forces had rescued 612 migrants and recovered the bodies of 18 others in several operations overnight off the country's Mediterranean coast.

Sharing images of some of those rescued, including women and children, after their boats capsized, the force said they were all migrants from sub-Saharan African countries attempting to cross the sea to Europe.

The survivors were rescued in several operations in the Sfax region to the east of the centre of the country after their boats capsized or broke down, according to the national guard.

Exhausted people including women and children, some of whom appear to be dead, can be seen in the images. Some are pictured clinging on to large buoys.

In another image, a woman struggles to hoist a child, his body rigid and apparently lifeless, aboard the rescue boat.

Maritime guard members "succeeded in thwarting several separate attempts to reach Europe clandestinely", the national guard said in a press release.

Along with LibyaTunisia has in recent years become a key departure point in North Africa for migrants making the perilous Mediterranean Sea crossing in hopes of reaching a better life in Europe.

Its coastline in some places lies fewer than 150 kilometres (90 miles) from the Italian island of Lampedusa, often their first port of call.

Each year, tens of thousands of people attempt to make the crossing.

Yes, and 2,000 to 3,000 die or disappear in the effort every year.

Italy: 6 illegal migrants dead, 40 missing in shipwreck off Lampedusa Island

EU open-door immigration advocates — from globalist leaders to people-smugglers — are to blame for the repeated drownings that happen as a result of the people-smugglers transporting mostly Muslim illegal migrants from African countries to Italy.

Illegals continue to make their way to Europe via Italy. Far too many Western countries have been lax about illegals from the Middle East and Africa for too long. Now these countries have only a slim chance to maintain their free societies into the future, given their own low birthrates. Consider that since 2015, over 2.39 million illegal Muslim migrants have reached Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea. And Muslim countries have high birth rates.

Even given the danger of crossing the Mediterranean in light of the six migrants who died and 40 more missing, in 2023 alone, over 2,000 people, including about 289 children, died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to get into the EU. In 2024, 2,200 died. But that hasn’t stopped them. In 2023, about 380,000 illegals arrived in the EU via the Mediterranean. Also, consider the tens of thousands that go missing or whom the EU lost track of.

“Migrants pay smugglers between 1,500 and 5,000 Tunisian dinars (roughly $500-$1,600) for a spot on the dangerous boats.” A PBS report in 2023 stated that “demand is still growing despite the risk, and not just for Italy,” but for Spain and Greece, too. The most generous EU countries for welfare benefits which encourage illegals are France, Finland, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Spain, in that order. As for Greece, it is an easy gateway to Western Europe, given its large coastline (the longest on the Mediterranean basin) and many islands.

A new EU migrant smuggling law came into effect three months ago, but it remains to be seen whether it will serve as a deterrent. Likely not, since the EU has never taken illegal migration seriously.

Six migrants die, 40 missing in shipwreck off Italy’s Lampedusa, UNHCR says

Reuters, March 19, 2025:

ROME, March 19 (Reuters)At least six migrants have died and 40 were missing after a shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa, a spokesperson for the United Nations’ Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Wednesday.

The Italian coastguard said separately it intervened after being alerted to a rubber dinghy in distress on Tuesday, finding 10 survivors and six bodies. The coastguard said search and rescue efforts were continuing on Wednesday.

With bad weather making operations more difficult, the coastguard said it was being supported by aircraft supplied by the army and the police, as well as the European Union’s border agency Frontex.

A UNHCR spokesperson said survivors told rescuers that many among a group of 56 migrants – from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Mali – fell into the water due to bad weather a few hours after setting off from the Tunisian city of Sfax.

The rescued migrants were being assisted in Lampedusa by the UNHCR and its partner agency the International Rescue Committee (IRC), while the Italian Red Cross was providing psychological support, the spokesperson added….

UK: Illegal English Channel crossings soar to ‘record high’ despite repeated government promises to stop them

The UK government issued a statement in response to the boat crossings:

We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.

The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay. We will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.

The Labour government made an election promise to stop these crossings. To the British electorate, this promise was apparently convincing. Yet nothing was done after elections, and nothing will be done by the lying Labour government. When the British public complains about the fallout from the UK’s suicidal immigration policy, they are deemed “racists,” “Islamophobes,” and far-right, dangerous radicals.

Leftist globalists are in support of open-door (unvetted) migration; and the dismantling of Western traditions, customs and freedoms, to replace them with totalitarianism.

Channel Crisis: Illegal Boat Migration Soars to Record High in Britain

by Kurt Zindulka, Breitbart, March 26, 2025:

Illegal migrant crossings of the English Channel are occurring at a record pace since the start of the year, despite the left-wing Labour government’s pledge to end the crisis.

In less than three months, over 5,000 illegal aliens have been recorded reaching British shores after crossing the Channel in small boats launched from the beaches of France.

According to an analysis from the BBC, the number of crossings since the start of the year is an all-time high for the time period since the government began tracking such numbers almost a decade ago.

It came as 241 aliens were brought ashore on Saturday, taking the total for the year to 5,512. In comparison, at the same time last year, 4,306 had illegally crossed the waterway. By March 22nd of 2023, 3,683 illegals had crossed the Channel, and in 2022, 3,836 reached Britain via the illegal migrant route.

The 28 per cent increase in illegal crossings over last year may cast further doubt on Prime Minsiter Sir Keir Starmer’s promise to end the crisis.…

It is actually a 46% increase over 2022-23. Doubt? Is that a joke, or what?
