Antisemitism > Is Canada leading the western world? RCMP investigating Canadian IDF members for war crimes

The answer is 'no', Britain is leading the Western world, but Canada is pulling a close second.

Canada Launches War Crimes Investigation of Israeli-Canadian IDF Soldiers in Gaza War

Canada is fast becoming one of the worst Western countries for its anti-Israel antagonism from the top, down to the lowest terrorist thug operating freely on its soil with little to no legal consequences.

Canada Launches War Crimes Probe Into

IDF Veterans With Dual Citizenship

i24News, June 3, 2025:

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has launched a criminal investigation into several Israeli-Canadian soldiers suspected of committing crimes against humanity during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, according to a report published Tuesday by the Toronto Star.

The probe—part of Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Program (CAHWCP)—focuses on Canadian citizens who served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), particularly during the Gaza conflict that erupted in 2023.

The investigation, which began in 2024, is being carried out in coordination with Canada’s Department of Justice, immigration authorities, and border services.

Unlike high-profile Canadian investigations into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, which included public hotlines and dedicated websites, the current case has unfolded quietly. Authorities have not issued public statements or updates, though officials confirm that the process may include gathering evidence, international cooperation, and potential indictments on Canadian soil.

“The program’s aim is to ensure Canada does not become a safe haven for war criminals,” the Department of Justice said in a statement. “This includes both prosecuting those within Canada and sharing relevant evidence with other jurisdictions.”…

The targeting of the IDF by the Canadian government is a disturbing new twist that reeks of a double standard. In January, the Ottawa firm Insight Threat Intelligence revealed in an extensive report that the jihad terrorist threat to Canada “has rarely been higher,” yet no serious follow-up investigations have been reported. And since 2017, Canada’s Security Intelligence Service acknowledged that dozens of ISIS jihadis were walking free, yet authorities won’t charge them. Canada was focused on DEI, through which groups such as the Anti-Hate Network continued to bleed taxpayers of funds so as to drive their radical left agendas, even in schools, while targeting anyone as an “Islamophobe” who warned about Canada’s jihad problem. Yet Canada has ignored soaring antisemitism, and even worse, it is now exacerbating it by “quietly” going after IDF veterans engaged in a legitimate war.

Unlike high-profile Canadian investigations into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, which included public hotlines and dedicated websites, the current case has unfolded quietly.

Sneakily is a more accurate word, and one should not make even the remotest comparison between Israel and Russia. Israel is fighting for its existence, and has been since its founding in 1948.

The issue of IDF recruitment in Canada isn’t a new one. In fact, it’s longstanding, but because of the highly publicized war in Gaza, which is causing unspeakable suffering, entirely the fault of Hamas, pro-Hamas enemies of Israel have become emboldened. They are using every means at their disposal to attack the Jewish state and those who support it. Less than three month ago, an anti-Israel website surfaced called Find IDF Soldiers. The organization behind it, called The Mapleclaimed that it was not a doxxing website, because it compiled “publicly available information about individual Canadians,” yet The Maple actually does extensive research about individuals, makes this information readily available, and incites antagonism against Canadian veterans of the IDF with the intention of boosting the Palestinian “resistance.” The Find IDF Soldiers website states:

For the better part of the past century, some Jews in Canada have been travelling to Israel to fight alongside other Jewish Zionists from around the world.

At first, these Canadians, along with some non-Jewish ones, fought with Zionist militias to establish the State of Israel, which was done through the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land. In the decades since, at least hundreds of Jewish Canadians have willingly joined the Israeli military, and aided the state in its wars and occupation of neighbouring land.

Of course, there were no Palestinians in the Holy Land in 1948, there were Arabs who had recently moved into Palestine from across North Africa and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Palestinian People were an invention by Yasser Arafat in the 1960s.

Canadian Jewish News reported that “groups of IDF veterans initially named on the website—most of whom are based in Canada, the U.S., or Israel—have been exploring legal avenues to respond to The Maple for publishing the project.” With the latest RCMP development, The Maple will be celebrating.

As pro-Hamas zeal grows, so do attacks of various kinds against the State of Israel and the Jewish community. The Newsmagine of the Islamic Movement, Crescent International has been working to incriminate those involved in IDF recruitment. It accuses Israel of “war crimes” committed “against Palestinians living under its military occupation,” without any mention of the zealous jihad in the region that sought to keep out Jews from emigrating to their homeland even before 1948.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (formerly CAIR-CAN) has “unveiled proposed legislation to reshape Canada’s stance on Palestine.” The legislation is called the “Nakba Bill.”

If it passes, the legislation could reorient Ottawa’s policy on the Middle East conflict with curbs on trade with Israel and its army recruitment activities in Canada, along with political recognition of Palestinian statehood. Stephen Brown, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), which helped draft the bill, hopes it effects go beyond Canada’s borders.

Brown wants the bill to serve as “a blueprint for other Western countries that are looking at also reinforcing a rules-based order.” This upside-down bill smears Israel as it pushes the Palestinian “resistance” agenda from the River to the Sea, and it’s being done in the name of peace and human rights.

The Nakba Bill also calls for the Canadian government to “recognize the term ‘racism against Palestinians’ and recognize the state of Palestine,” and demands sanctions against Israel’s Otzma Yehudit party, “with their ties to Kahane Chai.”

The silence from human rights groups in Canada is deafening amid the disturbing trends unfolding against Israel and against Jews. The problem includes authorities such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. And recently, a Toronto Police Document accused Israel of ethnic cleansing. Toronto has the largest Jewish community in Canada and the fourth largest in the world after Israel, the US and France. There have been numerous incidences involving Toronto police, which has now been accused of two-tier policing:

  • Only three months after October 7, Toronto police were discovered to be delivering coffee to pro-Hamas demonstrators as they blocked North America’s busiest highway overpass. According to a National Post report, one of the demonstrators stated: “The police are becoming our little messengers.” The demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and called the neighborhood a “Zionist-infested area.”
  • In November 2024, as antisemitism soared in Canada, with pro-Hamas thugs rampaging in Montreal and Toronto, police targeted Rebel Media founder Ezra Levant.
  • In early April, Pro-Hamas agitators and jihad sympathizers unleashed a “night of rage” against Jews in Toronto and Montreal, while police were MIA.
  • In mid-March, Toronto Police Muslim liaison officers “praised October 7 for a surge in Islam converts,” and suffered no consequences.
  • Also in March, pro-Hamas Muslims disrupted Toronto’s busy Yonge and Bloor intersection with prayers over a loudspeaker, while Toronto Police didn’t disappoint with their two-tier policing.

Police stood by and did nothing, or rather, enabled the problematic crowd, later justifying the disruption as “fundamental rights protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” Then it emerged that Toronto police spent $14 million, mostly on anti-Israel rallies without permits. By this point, the Toronto police’s two-tier policing was glaring.

The latest revelations about Canada’s launch of a war crime investigation of Israeli-Canadian IDF soldiers is reportedly leading to fear of prosecution from dual citizens who volunteered with the IDF if they return home. Some Jewish community leaders say “a sense of unease is growing, with some describing an increasingly hostile political climate toward Israel and its supporters.”

Senator Leo Housakos recently spoke out about Canada’s soaring antisemitism and how “Jews are no longer safe.”

Jews have been relentlessly targeted in Canada by pro-Hamas sympathizers since October 7, 2023, after Israel was viciously attacked by Hamas, a group funded by Iran, which aims to obliterate the Jewish state. Now, jihad terror is allowed to proliferate in Canada, along with pro-Hamas activism, while the persecution of Jews mounts. Canada, along with many other Western nations, has preferred to look the other way, as authorities have found it more comfortable to believe that Islam is a religion of peace. It is a religion of conquest. The Palestinian “resistance” against Israel is rooted in Islamic doctrine, which is why the Jewish state was opposed from its founding. According to the Hamas Covenant:

The Islamic Resistance Movement: The Movement’s programme is Islam. From it, it draws its ideas, ways of thinking and understanding of the universe, life and man. It resorts to it for judgement in all its conduct, and it is inspired by it for guidance of its steps.

The Islamic Resistance Movement’s Relation With the Moslem Brotherhood Group:

Article Two:
The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Moslem Brotherhood in Palestine. Moslem Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterised by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embrace of all Islamic concepts of all aspects of life, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, information, science of the occult and conversion to Islam.

Yet anti-Israel supporters and enablers of Hamas are multiplying rapidly and working toward the ultimate subjugation of all infidels.

And Canada seems to be doing their best to enable them.

If the investigation is fair and honest, which is a little unlikely, it will prove the IDF is not guilty of war crimes. So, this could be a good thing.

Hamas committed hundreds of war crimes on Oct 7th - Human Rights Watch, Hamas furious

Hamas is always furious when the truth comes out

Hamas committed 'hundreds' of war crimes

on October 7, HRW says

Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups it coordinated committed hundreds of war crimes in the October 7 attack on southern Israel, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) NGO said in a new report released on Wednesday. Hamas rejected the findings, calling on the US-based rights group to withdraw the report and apologise.

Hamas led other Palestinian armed groups in committing hundreds of war crimes in the surprise October 7 attack on Israel that set off the Gaza war, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Wednesday.

Hamas reacted with fury to one of the most in-depth international studies on the unprecedented incursion into southern Israel, demanding that HRW withdraw the report and "apologise".

The report set out a host of crimes under international law that it says Hamas and its allies breached.

"It's impossible for us to put a number on the specific instances," HRW associate director Belkis Wille told a news conference, adding that "there were obviously hundreds on that day".

The crimes include "deliberate and indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian objects; wilful killing of persons in custody; cruel and other inhumane treatment; sexual and gender-based violence; hostage taking; mutilation and despoiling (robbing) of bodies; use of human shields; and pillage and looting", said the report.

The report focuses on violations of international humanitarian law, rules mostly rooted in the Geneva Conventions for conduct in war.

Although Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is recognised as the orchestrator of the attack, the report lists other armed groups that committed war crimes on October 7, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

"The reality is that it really wasn't civilians from Gaza who perpetrated the worst abuses," said Wille.

"That was a claim made very early on by Hamas to distance itself from the events, and by Israel to justify its retaliation operation."

'Incredibly organised' campaign

Wille pointed to the "incredibly organised and coordinated nature" of the assault on cities, kibbutz communities, and military bases around Gaza.

"Across many attack sites, fighters fired directly at civilians, often at close range, as they tried to flee, and at people who happened to be driving vehicles in the area," said the report.

"They hurled grenades and shot into safe rooms and other shelters and fired rocket-propelled grenades at homes.

"They set some houses on fire, burning and suffocating people to death, and forcing out others who they then captured or killed."

HRW said it "found evidence of acts of sexual and gender-based violence by fighters including forced nudity, and the posting without consent of sexualised images on social media."

The report quoted a team of the UN special representative on sexual violence in conflict who said they interviewed people who had reported witnessing "rape and gang rape, in at least three locations".

But it said the full extent of sexual and gender-based violence "will likely never be fully known" as victims had died, or stigma would stop them talking out, or Israeli first responders "largely" did not collect relevant evidence.

Hamas angrily rejected the report.

Hamas' fury is a result of their prolific lying over the past 9 months, and suddenly, HRW reveals the truth. Hamas' pretension of being a resistance movement is now seen as another of their relentless lies. Now they will attack HRW as a lying arm of the Zionists when HRW has already condemned Israel for its response.

"We reject the lies and blatant bias towards the occupation and the lack of professionalism and credibility in the Human Rights Watch report. We demand its withdrawal and an apology," said a statement released by the Palestinian militants, considered a "terrorist" group by the United States, European Union and others.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

The militants seized 251 hostages, 116 of whom remain in Gaza including 42 the military says are dead.

Israel responded with a military offensive that has killed at least 38,664 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to data provided by the Gaza health ministry.

Remember, the Health Ministry is a ministry of Hamas, and Hamas always lies and exaggerates. I would be surprised if the real number is one-tenth of that. If not, where are the bodies, where are the graves? You can't hide nearly 40,000 bodies.

The report only covered the events of October 7, not the subsequent war. Hamas said it should have taken account of Israel's response. HRW is still looking into the conflict in Gaza.

The International Criminal Court chief prosecutor has asked court judges to issue arrest warrants against Hamas leaders including its political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The prosecutor has also sought warrants against Netanyahu and his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, on charges ranging from "starvation of civilians" to "extermination and/or murder" as crimes against humanity.

The Hamas War > Palestinian Propaganda winning the war while it's killing Gazans

*Palestinians have mastered the art of propaganda to a whole new level. They fight their war in the media, not on the ground. The more Palestinians civilians they can get the IDF to kill or injure, the more they win. They know that the godless mainstream media is antisemitic and will jump on the side of anyone else who is antisemitic regardless of how incredibly evil and barbaric they are. MSM has a lot of blood on their hands.

Only 9% of Palestinians think Hamas

committed war crimes

Many refuse to believe that the majority of Palestinians support Hamas, but they forget that Hamas was elected by the Palestinian people. A new poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) shows up what Palestinian culture really is: it is comprised of a people who seek a one-state solution, that is, the total destruction of Israel. Those among them who claim to support a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders are fully aware that such borders will provide an easy opportunity for jihadists to annihilate the state of Israel. Only 9% of Palestinians think Hamas committed war crimes, while the majority — 67% — actually support the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.

Itamar Marcus writes below:

This must be an eye-opener for Americans and Europeans who are pressuring Israel to accept the Palestinian Authority as a peace partner.

If it really is received as an eye-opener, then changes in the views of Americans and Europeans should follow. Chances are, however, that globalist American and European politicians will turn a blind eye to the findings and continue to slam Israel. 1,400 years of jihad terror still haven’t convinced them.

The Jerusalem Post ran an article in November: Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank strongly support Hamas, October 7 attack. The article stated that “75% of respondents agreed with the October 7 attack and 74.7% agreed that they support a single Palestinian state ‘from the river to the sea.’”

In other words, 75% don't want a 2-state solution and will likely support the genocide of Israelis even with a 2-state solution.

Only 9% of Palestinians think Hamas committed war crimes;

67% support Oct. 7 atrocities

by Itamar Marcus, Palestinian Media Watch, June 13, 2024:

Shocking poll results in the latest poll by PSR! Only 9% of Palestinians think Hamas committed war crimes while a whopping 67% say the Oct. 7 attacks were a correct decision.

For those who still delude themselves into thinking that Palestinians are moderate, think again. For president, Palestinians overwhelmingly prefer the Hamas leader (46%) over the PA/Fatah leader (5%). Fatah is only preferred when their candidate is the terrorist Marwan Barghouti, a convicted murderer, who is serving 5 life sentences.

This must be an eye-opener for Americans and Europeans who are pressuring Israel to accept the Palestinian Authority as a peace partner. The PA represents no one. The Palestinian population is not interested in peace. Mahmoud Abbas only represents himself. And if they ever have a future election, they are certain to elect a terrorist as president and Hamas to rule the parliament.

The following are some of the most important findings in the latest poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR). Palestinians were questioned between May 26 and June 1, 2024. The poll includes Palestinians from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Was Hamas’ decision to launch the October 7 offensive correct or incorrect?

Correct: 67% (West Bank 73%, Gaza Strip 57%)

Incorrect: 26% (West Bank 17%, Gaza Strip 41%)

Are you satisfied with the performance in the war?

Hamas: 64% satisfied

Fatah (Palestinian Authority): 14% satisfied

War crimes

97% – Israel committed war crimes…

9% – Hamas committed war crimes

Military Madness > The Insane Cost of Nuclear Weapons; Biden's Wealth-Transfer Scheme; Race for smarter, deadlier drones

..

Nobel Prize-winning group tells it like it is

Global nuclear weapons spending calculated

During every minute of 2021 the world spent $156,841 on nuclear weapons, new report says

Global nuclear weapon spending saw a significant increase in 2021 according to the latest International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) report published on Tuesday.

In just one year, the nine nuclear-armed nations - US, China, Russia, France, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and the United Kingdom – spent a total of $82.4 billion on upgrading and maintaining their estimated 13,000 nuclear weapons, marking a 9% hike from the year before, according to ICAN’s estimates.

The report, which is ICAN’s third annual summary of global nuclear spending and is titled ‘Squandered: 2021 Global Nuclear Weapons Spending,’ highlights that in total, the world spent a combined $156,842 every single minute of 2021 on weapons of mass destruction, amid an ongoing pandemic and rising global food insecurity.

ICAN details exactly how much each of the nine countries spent on atomic weapons, lists the companies that profited, and the lobbyists hired to keep nuclear weapons in business.

The United States turned out to be by far the biggest spender on nuclear armaments in 2021, having spent $44.2 billion – four times more than the next in line. China was the only other country to exceed the ten-billion-dollar mark, at $11.7 billion spent, while Russia holds third place at $8.6 billion. The UK spent $6.8 billion, France, $5.9 billion, and countries like India, Israel and Pakistan each spent a little over a billion on their arsenals in 2021. In last place is North Korea, which spent $642 million.

$44.2 billion is more than half the global total!

The report goes on to question why and how these countries spent so much on nuclear weaponry amid myriad global issues such as food and energy shortages, but comes to the conclusion that the biggest driver of nuclear weapon spending was not security concerns but, rather, business interests.

Certain military contractors have allegedly made a fortune from nuclear weapons-related contracts according to ICAN, and these companies spend a big chunk of their income to hire lobbyists and fund think tanks that encourage politicians to spend even more on weapons of mass destruction.

According to the report, Honeywell International made $6.2 billion from nuclear tenders in 2021 and spent an additional $7 million on lobbying. Northrop Grumman got $5 billion and used $11.6 million on lobbying. Lockheed Martin received $1.9 billion from the industry and spent $16.9 million on lobbying.

The authors of the report note that after examining thousands of contracts, reports and lobby disclosures, they estimate that over a dozen private companies received a total of $30.2 billion in nuclear weapon contracts in 2021.

“Those companies then turned around and spent $117 million lobbying decision makers to spend more money on defense. And they also spent up to $10 million funding most of the major think tanks that research and write about policy solutions about nuclear weapons,” wrote ICAN.

The report goes on to note that all this spending has done nothing to deter any sort of conflict and that recent geopolitical events in Europe have only served to further line the pockets of those who are tied to the nuclear weapons industry.

“We were told that the billions invested in thousands of weapons of mass destruction with the power to destroy the world many times over was the price to pay for peace in Europe. Instead, those billions went to line the pockets of the powerful who profit from the production of weapons of mass destruction.”

The authors stress that the report demonstrates that “nuclear weapons don’t work” as they have failed to deter conflict in Europe.

“This is why we need multilateral disarmament more than ever. The first meeting of states parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Vienna [from June 21 to 23] could not come at a better time," ICAN Policy and Research Coordinator Alicia Sanders-Zakre said.

ICAN is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning, Geneva-based international coalition that has been actively campaigning for the respect and full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which it helped adopt at the UN in 2017. The treaty has been ratified by 59 countries around the world so far, however not a single nuclear state has yet to sign it.

This is Deep State at work, enriching themselves at the cost of the whole world. What good can be done with $82.4bn a year?

Biden to give $1 billion more in weapons to Ukraine

US will send artillery and advanced rockets to Kiev

Washington will give Kiev another $1 billion in “security assistance,” including artillery, ammunition and advanced missiles, US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday after a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

Notice the word 'give' above. This means that American taxpayers will donate that $1bn to one or more of the companies named in the above article. This is an exercise in transferring wealth from everyday Americans to the already filthy rich.

Biden informed Zelensky that the aid would include “additional artillery and coastal defense weapons, as well as ammunition for the artillery and advanced rocket systems that the Ukrainians need to support their defensive operations in [Donbass],” according to a readout of the call released by the White House.

The two leaders also discussed Wednesday’s meeting of the ‘contact group’ in Brussels, led by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, to “coordinate additional international support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

In addition to the weapons and ammunition, Biden said the US would send Kiev another $225 million in humanitarian assistance, for “supplying safe drinking water, critical medical supplies and healthcare, food, shelter, and cash for families to purchase essential items.”

While Biden did not specify the types of weapons being sent, the Pentagon’s under secretary for policy Colin Kahl revealed on Tuesday that the rocket artillery the US and the UK are sending to Ukraine will be supplied with heavy guided missiles with a range of up to 70km. Previously, the White House had said the HIMARS launchers would come with “battlefield munitions” and that Ukraine had given the US assurances it would not use them against Russian territory.

The Biden administration has previously provided Ukraine with over $5.3 billion in military assistance, of which $4.6 billion has come since February 24, according to Kahl. The $1 billion announced Wednesday is on top of these numbers.

In meetings ahead of the Madrid summit, NATO leaders also doubled down on deliveries of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

“We stand united here that it is crucial for Russia to lose the war,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who hosted NATO secretary-general and six other leaders from the bloc, said on Tuesday in The Hague. “And as we cannot have a direct confrontation between NATO troops and Russia, what we need to do is make sure that Ukraine can fight that war, that it has access to all the necessary weaponry.”

On Tuesday, Ukrainian artillery struck a village in Russia’s Bryansk Region, wounding six civilians. Rockets and artillery shells also rained on the city of Donetsk in Donetsk People’s Republic, in the worst bombardment since the beginning of the conflict in 2015, local authorities said. Five civilians were killed and more than 30 were wounded.

In Ukraine war, a race to acquire smarter, deadlier drones

KYIV, Ukraine (AP)Drone camera footage defines much of the public’s view of the war in Ukraine: grenades quietly dropped on unwitting soldiers, eerie flights over silent, bombed-out cities, armor and outposts exploding in fireballs.

Never in the history of warfare have drones been used as intensively as in Ukraine, where they often play an outsized role in who lives and dies. Russians and Ukrainians alike depend heavily on unmanned aerial vehicles to pinpoint enemy positions and guide their hellish artillery strikes.

But after months of fighting, the drone fleets of both sides are depleted, and they are racing to build or buy the kind of jamming-resistant, advanced drones that could offer a decisive edge.

And make a kazillion dollars for the manufacturer.

The urgency was reflected by the White House’s disclosure Monday that it has information that Iran will be rushing “up to several hundred” unmanned aerial vehicles to Moscow’s aid. Iranian-supplied drones have effectively penetrated U.S.-supplied Saudi and Emirati air-defense systems in the Middle East.

“The Russian drone force may still be capable, but exhausted. And Russians are looking to capitalize on a proven Iranian track record,” said Samuel Bendett, an analyst at the CNA military think tank.

Meanwhile, Ukraine wants the means “to strike at Russian command and control facilities at a significant distance,” Bendett said.

The demand for off-the-shelf consumer models remains intense in Ukraine, as do efforts to modify amateur drones to make them more resistant to jamming. Both sides are crowdfunding to replace battlefield losses.

“The number we need is immense,” a senior Ukrainian official, Yuri Shchygol, told reporters Wednesday, detailing the first results of a new fundraising campaign called “Army of Drones.” He said Ukraine is initially seeking to purchase 200 NATO-grade military drones but requires 10 times more.

Outgunned Ukrainian fighters complain that they simply don’t have the military-grade drones needed to defeat Russian jamming and radio-controlled hijacking. The civilian models most Ukrainians rely on are detected and defeated with relative ease. And it’s not uncommon for Russian artillery to rain down on their operators within minutes of a drone being detected.

Compared with the war’s early months, Bendett now sees less evidence of Russian drones getting shot down. “The Ukrainians are on the ropes,” he said.

Adding to the defenders’ woes: The Ukrainian hero of the war’s early weeks, the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB-2 laser-guided, bomb-dropping drone, has become less effective in the face of denser Russian air and electronic defenses in eastern Ukraine. It was the star of many a patriotic Ukrainian video.

“Russians are in a much better position because they fly long-range drones” designed to evade electronic countermeasures, a Ukrainian air reconnaissance unit leader recently told Associated Press journalists outside Bakhmut near the front lines.

On the ground, Russia’s more plentiful electronic warfare units can cut off drone pilots’ communications, interrupt live video and drop the vehicle from the sky or, if it has homing technology, force it to retreat.
