Vicious 'Neo Nazi' attack on Kiev 'gay bar'

A Kiev bar, frequented by members of LGBT community, has been attacked by a group of masked assailants, believed to be neo-Nazis, who smashed the establishment’s windows and destroyed outdoor seating.
The HvLv bar, located in the central part of Ukraine’s capital, was targeted late on Friday. The venue was set upon by around 20 masked men, some of whom were armed with telescopic batons and pepper spray.
Surveillance footage from the scene circulating online shows the assailants skirmishing with two bouncers, with both parties dousing each other with pepper spray. Heavily outnumbered, the security staff retreated into the bar, leaving the outdoor seating area at the mercy of the attackers.
The angry crowd (the assailants, or the customers?) then proceeded to break windows, as well as destroying outdoor chairs and tables. Some of the assailants tried to force their way into the premises, but staff had managed to lock the doors in time, and some of the patrons also reinforced them, footage from inside shows.
The rampage lasted for about five minutes, with the attackers ultimately retreating after they failed to gain access to the bar itself. During the attack, the masked men shouted homophobic and neo-Nazi slogans, the business claimed in an Instagram post, specifically “Death to the f**gots,” “Let’s get the f**gots,” and “White power.”
Some five minutes after the mob dispersed, a private security company contracted by the establishment arrived at the scene, followed by Kiev police. Later in the day, law enforcement said it had apprehended 12 suspects, and a criminal investigation was launched over “hooliganism.”
While no motive for the attack has been officially announced, the bar's management alleged it had been targeted by neo-Nazis. The venue said it had been harassed by the extreme-right for some three weeks prior to the incident, with purported neo-Nazis repeatedly showing up at the establishment, scribbling offensive graffiti on its walls, and scaring patrons away.
The troubles began earlier this month, following a call for a “crusade” shared on the social media channels of extreme-right groups in Kiev. The proclaimed goal was to battle the drug trade, which is allegedly rampant in multiple nightclubs across the Ukrainian capital, including the HvLv. The bar itself has vehemently denied such allegations.
Of course they did!
It was not immediately clear what group exactly was behind the attack, with no one taking responsibility for the rampage. A sticker of an extreme-right group named ‘Centuria’ has been reportedly recovered at the scene, yet it denied any involvement, claiming it was merely merchandise that anyone could have obtained.
Apparently, no-one was hurt seriously enough to warrant hospitalization, or even EM care.
Finland records first-ever case of suspected far-right terrorism

Five men have been detained for allegedly having planned gun and bomb attacks in what the Finnish police believe is the first case of far-right terrorism in the country’s history.
The members of the group, which operated in the southwestern town of Kankaanpää, were arrested on Tuesday, having been under surveillance for two years. On Friday, the court ruled that they should remain in custody.
The suspects are aged “around 25,” and most of them have a previous criminal record, the police said in a statement. Weapons, ammunition, and fertilizer – which can be used to make explosives – were seized in the raid during which they were detained.
Extremist materials found among the men’s possessions, and other material unearthed in the course of the investigation “reinforce the impression that they have become radicalized and gives reason to suspect them of terrorist offences,” the statement read.
The group appears to have been motivated by “accelerationism” – a white supremacist ideology that rests on the idea that Western governments are irreparably corrupt and seeks to hasten their demise by sowing division and interracial strife. The ideology has been linked to several high-profile shootings in the US as well as to the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand in 2019.
The police didn’t reveal the targets the men had planned to attack, but said they had operated independently of any large far-right organization. They are currently being investigated for involvement in terrorism, the illegal possession of firearms, and aggravated theft.
The prosecutors have given the police until March 31 next year to press charges.
Detective Superintendent Toni Sjoblom described the case as “worrying” and urged the Finnish public to help his officers counter the far-right threat.
“If you see clear signs of radicalization in your loved ones, you should react as quickly as possible, for example, by telling the authorities about your concerns,” he said.

Leadership chaos and the recent scandal in Thuringia – where the CDU sided with the tabooed AfD – led voters to punish the chancellor’s party in Germany’s second-largest city, its top-tier members and opponents believe.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) achieved its worst ever result in the city state of Hamburg on Sunday, scoring only 11.2 percent of the vote and trailing far behind its center-left rivals, the Social Democrats and Greens, who won the support of 39 and 24.2 percent of residents respectively.
This is one of the most embarrassing state election defeats in the CDU’s history, according to Der Spiegel, second only to the 1951 vote in Bremen, where it garnered just nine percent. Unsurprisingly, morale among the Christian Democrats – already dubbed the ‘Chaotic Demoralized Union’ in the media – was as low as their election result.
“It is a bitter day for the CDU in Germany and a historically bad result in Hamburg,” lamented the party’s secretary general Paul Ziemiak. "For us as a union there is nothing to gloss over,” added Daniel Gunther, prime minister of northern state Schleswig-Holstein.
The bitter defeat didn’t come out of the blue; the Christian Democrats have suffered from the leadership crisis which broke out after party leader and designated Merkel successor Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer – or AKK as she came to be known in German media – suddenly stepped aside, sending the party into a tailspin and blowing open the race for the chancellorship.
With AKK no longer at the helm – although she technically leads the CDU – the party lacked the determination and vision needed to win. The defeat in Hamburg was about “leaderlessness,” as Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans put it on ARD.
Referring to the selection of a new leader, he said it was important that AKK “has the right to act in order to organize the whole thing,” but failed to mention that Kramp-Karrenbauer’s abdication was due to organization and management skills she couldn’t show.
Earlier this month, a CDU branch in the eastern state of Thuringia defied AKK’s instructions and voted with the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to unseat the Left Party’s State Premier Bodo Ramelow and install the little-known Thomas Kemmerich, from the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP).
The move, which Merkel called “unforgivable,” broke with a consensus among mainstream parties of not cooperating with the right-wing group, and “noticeably overshadowed the Hamburg election campaign,” according to CDU’s major candidate Marcus Weinberg.
“These developments have made us famous and ultimately cost a lot of votes,” he admitted, explaining why voters handed the Christian Democrats their worst result. "Despite a creative and committed election campaign, our own election goals were clearly missed,” Weinberg said.
Meanwhile, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, head of the Left Party in Thuringia, agreed with the judgement, saying “the taboo breach has hit [CDU] all the way to Hamburg.”
Some say, however, that the “leaderlessness” and the Thuringia scandal aren’t the biggest problems in the party.
“The problems are homemade,” a high-ranking CDU member who refused to be named told Die Welt newspaper. He said the mood within the party was poisoned by envy and resentment instead of mutual support. “Internally, we tend to be malicious when one of us fails – and we don't realize that it all falls back on all of us,” he revealed.
Later in the year, the chancellor’s center-right party faces a string of local elections in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Leipzig in the east, the results of which will likely affect the nationwide vote in 2021.
According to recent polls by ARD and Bild, CDU – and its Bavarian allies – still holds the ground with between 26 and 27 percent of voter support, but as the Hamburg vote has shown, predictability is no longer a feature of German politics.
Here's a prediction you can take to the bank - if Germany continues to list to port, especially in the national elections next year, and if they continue to ostracize the AfD, there will be a very rapid and violent rise in far-right extremism. You cannot continue to ignore the presence of Islam in a post-Christian country.

Police Probe Auschwitz Far-Right Protest Calling to ‘Free Poland’ From Jews
In the post immediately above, I suggest that left-leaning people tend to be more likely antisemitic than others. Far-right people are the exception. These people sometimes call themselves Christians, sometimes glorify Hitler, but always are rabidly antisemitic, which, if my musings above are accurate, leaves them very far from being Christians.

Polish police are examining video evidence after some 100 far-right demonstrators marched through Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day, chanting anti-Semitic slogans at the site where Nazis murdered over a million Jews during WWII.
Videos, recordings and photos of the ultra-nationalist rally at the infamous Nazi death camp were sent to Polish prosecutors on Sunday. Authorities say there were some 70-100 demonstrators who took part in the march, which took place at the same time Polish officials and Holocaust survivors marked the 74th anniversary of the camp’s liberation by the Red Army in 1945. The two groups gathered on separate sides of the memorial site and never came into contact.
Photos from the far-right march show demonstrators carrying Polish flags through the gate which bears the infamous description “Arbeit Macht Frei,” (work sets you free) while they reportedly singing the Polish national anthem.
The demonstration was led by Piotr Rybak, a Polish nationalist who was arrested in 2015 for burning an effigy representing a Jew.
“The Jewish nation and Israel is doing everything to change the history of the Polish nation. Polish patriots cannot allow this,” Reuters quotes Rybak as saying at the demonstration. “It’s time to fight against Jewry and free Poland from them!” Rybak added, according to local media.

Rybak and his followers were angry with the Polish government, saying it paid tribute to the Jewish victims of the camp while ignoring the 150,000 non-Jewish Poles killed there. Some of their flags had the phrase “Polish holocaust” on them.
The demonstration did not take place on the grounds of the camp, but rather outside its gates, and was therefore legal, tweeted police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka.
Polish Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski defended the actions of local police, saying on Twitter that the gathering represented anti-Semitic “hooliganism” by people “not right in the head,” but did not technically violate the law. After coming under criticism from a number of opposition Civic Platform officials, he said the police response could have been more “adequate.”
A study by the The Holocaust Remembrance Project at Yale University and Grinnell College, published last week, warned about widespread Holocaust denial in Eastern Europe.
Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and Lithuania all received a “red” rating, indicating that these countries have a serious incapability of “living up to their tragic histories,” the researchers said.

A new study suggests that Holocaust denial is at its worst in Eastern Europe, where “revisionist” governments driven by feelings of “victimhood” try to erase their nation’s culpability in the massacre of Jews.
The study, published on January 25 – just days before Holocaust Remembrance Day (yesterday) – indicates rampant levels of historical revisionism regarding the mass-extermination of Jews under Nazi rule in eastern parts of the European Union. The Holocaust Remembrance Project was conducted by researchers from Yale and Grinnell Colleges and endorsed by the European Union of Progressive Judaism (EUPJ), an umbrella organization which links more than 170 progressive Jewish communities in 17 countries.
“Revisionism” here refers to people minimizing their own government’s complicity, downplaying the number of victims, or claiming that the events of the Holocaust never occurred at all. Based on their findings, the study assigned countries a green, yellow, or red rating, indicating “progress, caution or problems,” in their relation to Holocaust history. Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and Lithuania all received a “red” rating, indicating that these countries have a serious incapability of “living up to their tragic histories.”

Poland is particularly taken to task in the study. The authors describe the country as run by a “right-wing nationalist government” engaged in “competitive victimization, emphasizing the experience of Polish victims over that of Jewish victims.” Aside from rising levels of anti-Semitism and continued reductions in Holocaust education, the country came under fire for a law it passed in January of last year which made it illegal to implicate the Polish state in Nazi crimes.

On the other hand, Romania and the Czech Republic were both given a green rating, and were held up as exemplars. The Romanian government was praised for requiring mandatory Holocaust training for its military general staff and establishing an independent Holocaust-study commission.
While this part of the report focused on countries in Eastern Europe, the rest of the continent didn’t fare much better in recent related studies. One study published around the same time indicated that despite widely available evidence, 1 in 20 Britons don’t believe the Holocaust took place at all.
1 in 20, or about 5% is roughly the number of Muslims living in Britain. Curious coincidence, I guess.

A recent poll revealed that 1 in 20 Britons don’t believe the Holocaust took place. Historian and ‘Nazi hunter’ Efraim Zuroff claims that the results show a combination of “anti-Semitism and abysmal ignorance.”
Sunday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK, marking 74 years to the day since the Soviet Red Army liberated the Auschwitz extermination camp. Despite extensive documentary evidence, and testimony from survivors and perpetrators, Holocaust denial is on the rise in Britain.
One in 20 Britons believe the Holocaust never happened, according to a poll published on Sunday. Eight percent believe that the official death count of six million is exaggerated and one in five believe less than two million Jews were murdered. 45 percent simply don’t know how many died.
“It’s quite shocking and surprising,” Efraim Zuroff of the Israeli office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center told RT. The results, Zuroff said, combine “anti-semitism with abysmal ignorance.”
“Holocaust denial is simply a new form of anti-Semitism,” Zuroff added. Aside from the latest British survey, a recent study conducted by the EU’s Agency for Fundamental Rights, found that 89 percent of Europe’s Jews feel that anti-Semitism has increased since 2012. The study found that social media allowed anti-Jewish conspiracy theories to spread, and the recent influx of millions of Muslim migrants has revived an ancient religious conflict in the streets of modern Europe.
I wonder if there isn't more to it than that. I wonder if there is a spiritual aspect to this, that as Britain, and the rest of the western world turns more and more away from Christianity, that antisemitism increases as a consequence of getting farther from God and Truth. It seems to be the most left-leaning people are the most likely to be anti-Christian and also, the most likely to be antisemitic. IMHO.
Certainly, as the 2nd paragraph above makes clear, increasing Muslim refugees into Europe results in increased antisemitism. This will increase with time as Muslims propagate much more quickly than Europeans, and 2nd generation immigrants tend to be more devout than their parents. The more devout a Muslim, the more likely they are to be antisemitic.
Zuroff recommends continued efforts to teach schoolchildren about the Holocaust, but claimed that the relatively small number of trials and convictions for those involved could have contributed to the multiple genocides that have occurred since. These include the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which is also commemorated on Sunday.
“I think that people who contemplate joining genocidal movements...the first question they ask themselves is ‘will I be caught?’” he explained. “Will I be held accountable?”
Zuroff himself has helped bring dozens of these Nazi war criminals to trial, including notorious Croatian camp commandant Dinko Å akić, and Hungarian war criminal Dr. Sándor KépÃró, said to have been responsible for the murder of around 2,000 civilians in Novi Sad, Serbia, in 1942.

10 Suspected Far-Right Extremists Arrested in France over Planned Attack on Muslims

French counter-terrorism forces have detained a group of suspected far-right radicals who were plotting an attack on “people of Muslim faith.” Firearms as well as homemade explosives were found during the raid.
Ten people suspected of having links to a far-right movement have been detained in a large-scale security operation late on Sunday, June 24, the French media reported on Monday. The arrests were made by the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) as part of a counter-terrorism investigation into a planned attack on Muslims.
The raids were conducted in the Paris region, the western regions of Haute-Vienne and Charente-Maritime as well as on the island of Corsica. The suspects, aged between 32 and 69, had an “ill-defined plan to commit a violent act targeting people of the Muslim faith,” a source close to the investigation told AFP.
Another source told the French media that the group planned to attack those they considered to be “targets linked to radical Islam,” including hate preachers and radical imams, Islamist prisoners once they are released, as well as veiled women chosen at random. So far it is unclear how close the group was to implementing its plot.
The suspects were allegedly seeking to acquire firearms. Some were found during the raids of the suspects’ property. Security forces also found grenades and homemade explosives, which were apparently produced by the suspects.
A retired policeman identified only as Guy S. was among those arrested, Le Parisien reported. The man, 65, is suspected of leading the Action of the Operational Forces movement (AFO), a far-right group, which all those arrested allegedly belonged to. The clandestine organization allegedly sought to avenge the victims of Islamist attacks that have hit France in recent years.
The members of the group claimed they wanted to counter “the threat of radical Islam” in France, LCI said, adding that the suspects regularly trained in shooting clubs as they apparently prepared to carry out their attacks. They also reportedly prepared caches of weapons, ammunition, and food for their families in case of a “major crisis,” the broadcaster added. None of the suspects were apparently known to police or security forces before.
It is the second major far-right conspiracy thwarted by the French security forces in less than a year. In October 2017, counter-terrorism police arrested 10 people in the Paris and Marseille areas over a suspected plot to attack mosques, migrants, and even former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon.
Answering terrorism with terrorism is not the way combat the Islamization of France or anywhere else. But the lack of action, and even concern, of left leaning governments to the cultural suicides of France and other European countries, is creating a feeling of helplessness and frustration that feeds anti-Islamic violence.
If EU governments don't stop the Islamization of Europe, these kinds of groups will be popping up everywhere and eventually there will be civil war all across the continent. That's not a threat; it's an observation.

Europe Struggling to Deal with Migrants, Jihadists, Terrorists and Other Muslims
New interior minister vows end to ‘refugee camp’ Italy
Italy’s newly sworn-in minister of the interior and one of the leaders of the Euroskeptic coalition, Matteo Salvini, has assured Italians that he’s ready to fight illegal immigration and fulfill his election promises.
Only days after the long-awaited government was formed, the leader of the League party travelled to Sicily, where he confirmed that he intends to initiate a massive crackdown on migrants, declaring that “the free ride is over.”
“As the minister of interior, I will collaborate with the European and African states to do everything I can to avoid more deaths [in the Mediterranean], avoid that thousands of desperate people deceive themselves that, here in Sicily, there are houses and jobs for everyone,” Salvini said during his visit to one of the migrant “hot spots” in Sicily.
According to a poll conducted by Quorum in 2017, 68 percent of Italian voters have a negative view of immigration.
Many people applauded when Salvini said that “Italy and Sicily cannot be Europe's refugee camp” anymore, and that Italy needed to create deportation centers.
Not everyone is in favor of Salvini’s tough migration policies, however. There were those who heard dangerous notes in his speeches in Sicily, with protesters shouting “Salvini, go home!”“Shame on you!” and bluntly calling him “racist.”
Salvini’s anti-immigrant initiative has also been dismissed as unrealistic by critics like journalist Oscar Giannino, who on his radio program ‘La Versione di Oscar’ raised doubts about whether the new interior minister had properly evaluated all the difficulties involved in repatriating over 500,000 people.
However, during his visit to Sicily, Salvini emphasized that his was not a “hard line against migrants,” but simply “a line of commonsense.” With “€5 billion spent to keep migrants in hotels,” it would be better to reallocate this money and send them back home to their countries of origin and invest in their future, he said. This was especially so because not all of them were asylum seekers, as they declared themselves to be, he said.
“They are not asylum seekers, because someone arriving from Tunisia isn’t escaping any war,” the minister said.
Widely criticized by the European community for his anti-migrant rhetoric, the League’s leader insisted that he wanted to safeguard the interests of common Italians.
“They either help us to safeguard our boundaries, save lives, and ensure the security of our country or we will have to take a different path,” the minister said, responding to the criticism.
In light of the forthcoming meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg to discuss the EU’s “Dublin” rule, Salvini emphasized that the problem of immigration could not be solely an Italian problem anymore. The Dublin rule, under which migrants have to file for asylum in the first EU state in which they arrive, had serious repercussions for Italy, which remains the favorite spot for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea in smugglers' boats. It was forced to receive over 700,000 refugees since 2013.
Most refugees, who had initially intended to move to countries in northern Europe, never made it there because of stricter border controls in France, Austria and Switzerland.

A major French prison, which houses more than a hundred radicalized inmates, is overcrowded, understaffed and “starting to explode,” a correctional officers’ union warns. It says the guards suffer attacks and commit suicide.
Europe’s largest prison Fleury-Merogis is in dire condition, the representative of the CGT Penitentiaries Union told RT. “Every day in France, there are prison supervisors who are attacked violently; every day we have security problems because all the proposals are not yet in place,” Ambroise Koubi said. He added that the authorities offered to send in extra 1,100 supervisors, but so far it didn’t happen.
“Fleury-Merogis is starting to explode already. Because we are tired of this. You are the first TV channel I’m telling this to, but yesterday we had a suicide,” Koubi said, adding that the prison had 10 other suicide cases since January, with supervisors among the victims.
The prison, situated north of Paris, (Google Maps, below, shows it in the south of Paris) housed several well-known jihadists. Among them was Salah Abdeslam, who organized the Paris shootings in November 2015, Amedy Coulibaly, who attacked a kosher store in January 2015, and the Charlie Hebdo attacker Cherif Kouachi. The jail currently has over 120 radicalized inmates, says the penitentiaries union official.
Koubi told RT that the existing staff isn’t enough to maintain an overcrowded jail. “On one floor, the supervisor can have between 100-130 detainees to manage,” he said. “Just imagine how hard it is to manage all these prisoners.”
The prison guards staged several protests in the past, decrying the lack of attention towards poor working conditions inside and the radicalization of inmates. In January, they managed to block the entrance to the prison for a few hours and clashed with riot police.
Overall, there are more than 500 terrorists currently behind bars in France’s prisons, with 1,200 more inmates considered to be radicalized, according to the French Justice Minister. The government is set to release 40 convicted terrorists within two years.
The country’s public anti-terrorism prosecutor voiced concern over the plans. “There is a major risk of seeing people who are not at all repentant at the end of their sentence come out of prison, who could even be more radical given their stay in prison,” Francois Molins told French BFM TV channel last week.
No kidding! The solution is not a very good one, but I haven't heard any better. The solution is to declare radicalized Muslims insane, for they surely are, and then lock them up until they renounce Mohammed and the Quran. If they are unable to do that then they should remain in a secure facility or be deported.

The Home Office has announced an overhauled counter-terrorism strategy that includes the closer monitoring of British jihadists and a new approach to targeting the growing threat of far-right extremism.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid has announced the new measures as part of efforts to revamp the security service’s Contest strategy, which will utilize a multi-agency approach in order to tackle terrorist threats that are becoming “increasingly diverse.”
Javid has previously described his family's heritage as Muslim but clarified that he himself does not practise any religion.[6][66] He received religious hate mail in the form of a "Punish a Muslim day" parcel; as of March 2018, he was the fifth British MP to receive such abuse.[67]

I was horrified when his name was announced as the new Home Secretary, but having read about him, I have to say I am very impressed; and I like what he's doing here.
As part of the renewed strategy, technology companies will have greater responsibility in tackling cases of extremism online, while Javid has called for greater cooperation with businesses when they spot worrying buying-patterns, or suspicious behavior while hiring a vehicle, purchasing chemicals, or components that could be combined to make explosives.
An additional 1,000 security services staff will also be recruited to collect and analyze data as well as keep suspects under better surveillance, and powers will be granted with the intention to disrupt terrorist plots and jail suspects before an attack could take place.
MI5 and counter terrorism police are currently running more than 500 live operations involving roughly 3,000 'subjects of interest'.
At the Contest relaunch, Javid said that there had been a “step change” in the threat from terrorism. He also drew a comparison between Islamist extremists and far-right terrorists.
The Home Secretary said the UK will still identify “the biggest threat is from Islamist terrorism,” including Al-Qaeda and “Daesh,” the Arabic term used for Islamic State, he will also identify far-right extremism as a growing cause for concern.
“...Extreme right-wing terrorism is also an increasing threat," Javid said on Monday. "Both exploit grievances, distort the truth, and undermine the values that hold us together."
Of course, right-wing extremism grows because the government does so little in controlling Muslim immigration and in curbing Muslim men's violent behaviour toward young, White, British girls. Many are being prosecuted now, but there is still a profound reluctance in many areas to clamp down on Pakistani child sex exploiters.
"Our greatest strength lies not only in what we do but who we are and the values and freedoms we hold dear," Javid added."That is why everyone has a part to play in confronting terrorism. I want to say to all those who stand up against all forms of extremism that this government stands with you. I stand with you. But there is more for us all to do."
The announcement comes the day after the first anniversary of the London Bridge and Borough Market terrorist attacks where eight people were murdered by jihadists.
Javid also reaffirmed his support for the government’s much criticized Prevent program, which aims to avoid radicalization and extremism. This will see MI5 warn teachers and police about terrorism suspects in future.
Labour Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, however, has called for Prevent to be reviewed, claiming it can be counterproductive, according to the Guardian.
Earlier this year, it was reported that anti-fracking and animal rights activists were being included in Prevent training, with Merseyside Police likening them to jihadists and neo-Nazis.
Since March last year, security services and police claim to have thwarted 12 jihadist and four far-right terror plots.
Switzerland to inspect Facebook and Twitter profiles
of asylum seekers

Asylum seekers in Switzerland could soon have their social media profiles reviewed as part of their application processes, according to local media reports.
The newspaper ‘NZZ am Sonntag’ reported that Swiss authorities will inspect data from an applicant’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to investigate claims of asylum. A spokesperson for the State Secretariat for Migration told the newspaper that the information published on these sites can cultivate a better understanding of a person’s circumstances.
"From the information that asylum seekers publish on social networks, it may be possible to draw conclusions that may be of importance for the asylum procedure such as references to family relationships," the spokesperson said in a statement cited by SwissInfo.
Quite frankly, I'm astonished to see this report. Astonished that is isn't already being done everywhere in Europe and America.
A working group has now been established to set down rules around how and under what conditions information on social media can be accessed.
Advocates for the strategy cite the case of a Nigerian man who applied for asylum in Switzerland in 2016 amid claims that he had been persecuted in his own country. After finding pictures the man’s wife had posted online, investigators learned that he had not come from Nigeria but from Spain, where he had been living under a different name. A deportation order was appealed by the man’s lawyers on the grounds that the man’s privacy had been violated. The appeal was rejected by a federal court.
According to the non-profit group Swiss Refugee Council, Switzerland received more than 18,000 applications for asylum last year, including a record number from people living in other European countries. The majority of applications from outside Europe were from people from Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan.
