Nigeria: Muslims murder eleven farmers who didn’t have the money to pay the tax they demanded

They slit the throats of seven of the farmers: “When you meet the unbelievers, strike the necks” (Qur’an 47:4)

The Qur’an also tells Muslims to fight “the people of the book,” that is, primarily Jews and Christians, and force them to submit and pay a tax to the Muslims: “Fight against those who do not believe in Allah or the last day, and do not forbid what Allah and his messenger have forbidden, and do not follow the religion of truth, even if they are among the people of the book, until they pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.” (Qur’an 9:29)

Historically, the collection of the jizya was ended in the middle of the nineteenth century in the Ottoman Empire and Egypt, under Western pressure. Jihad groups, however, want to revive it along with the caliphate.

Suspected jihadists kill 11 farmers in NE Nigeria: militia

Suspected jihadists killed 11 farmers in two separate attacks in northeastern Nigeria this weekend, anti-jihadist militia fighters told AFP on Sunday.

Communities in northern and central Nigeria are coming under attack from both jihadist groups and criminal gangs -– referred to as “bandits” by the local population — who specialise in kidnappings for ransom and cattle rustling.

They impose taxes on farmers seeking access to their own fields and target those who do not pay.

Some farmers, having already paid ransoms to secure the release of kidnapped relatives, no longer have the money to pay the levies.

Others are abandoning rural areas….

On Saturday, attackers rounded up seven farmers in Kuwawu village, in Borno State, and slit their throats, the anti-jihadist militia said.

They blamed militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a rival splinter faction of the Borno-based jihadist group Boko Haram…

ISWAP and Boko Haram have been known to attack farmers, loggers, herders and scrap metal scavengers who they accused of spying on them for Nigerian troops and anti-jihadist militia….

Everybody knows in the West, or thinks he knows, that Islam is a religion of peace and all that, and so the question of why a group that calls itself the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims would so regularly engage in mass murder remains unexplained. We don’t see a group called the Group for the Support of Christianity and Christians regularly committing mass murder. Why the difference? Everyone in the West knows, or thinks he knows, that all religions have their “extremists.” Yet we only see stories such as this one involving Muslims, never anyone of any other religion. Now, why is that?

Al-Qaeda-linked militants claim deadly attack on airport in Niger’s capital

Agence France-Presse, June 19, 2026:

A group linked to al-Qaeda claimed Thursday’s attack on the airport of Niger’s capital, Niamey, that killed at least 11 soldiers and two civilians, six months after other jihadists staged a large assault on the sensitive site.

Twenty-two attackers were also killed as security forces repelled the raid on the Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s defence ministry said.

Gunfire erupted early in the morning and rang out for hours near the airport, where a large military presence was later deployed, residents said.

In the evening, a brief statement from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, or JNIM using its Arabic acronym, said it had carried out “a suicide attack” on the airport and on a neighbouring military base. The group is al-Qaeda’s Sahel branch.

I wonder if it was intentionally suicidal, or if they decided it was suicidal in retrospect. 

Niger has been ruled for three years by a military junta, which has struggled to contain jihadist violence that has rocked the west African country for a decade….
