Bits and Bites from Around the World > Man, dog, and fishermen kill attacking black bear; 'No Danger' for boy surrounded by pack of wolves

Maple Ridge man and his dog survive bear attack

The bear died after a group of fishers helped the man fight it off

Ross Davies, a Maple Ridge wildlife photographer, captured this picture of a bear in 2019.

A man and his dog survived a black bear attack in Maple Ridge last week, after he and nearby bystanders fought it off.

According to the Conservation Officer Service, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, a man was walking his off-leash dog along a trail near 240 Street around 2:30 p.m. when a black bear engaged the dog.

"The owner was able to gain control of his dog, and attempted to leave when the bear re-engaged," reports the COS.

The man, who is not identified, was injured when he fought with the bear. A group of nearby fishermen came to assist, and the bear died as a result.

Now I'm curious. How did fisherman kill an angry black bear?

After investigating the incident, COS officers determined the bear was killed in self-defence, and so "no enforcement action will be taken in relation to this incident."

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The deceased bear was taken to an Abbotsford lab to undergo a necropsy to determine if any factors may have affected the bear's behaviour.

In a statement, the COS said despite the season bears are still active in many areas, such as where there are milder temperatures and the availability of attractants like garbage can delay hibernation.

"The public is encouraged to take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including being aware of your surroundings, leashing pets, and travelling in groups."

According to the B.C. Conservation Foundation, black bears account for up to 25,000 calls to provincial conservation officers each year, and can "become more assertive or destructive when they have learned to associate humans and their activities with food."

B.C. has among the highest population of black bears in the world, and the foundation estimates about 150,000 living in the province.

People can better prevent encounters with black bears by talking and singing to avoid surprising an animal, managing attractants like garbage, keeping pets leashed, and carrying bear spray, according to the foundation.

Animal organization says there was no direct

danger in boy’s confrontation with wolves

NL Times

There was no direct danger during a confrontation between a boy who was cycling and wolves in Woudenberg, Utrecht, last week Thursday, the Dutch Mammal Society has said. However, the organization did say that the situation was a problem as the wolves were within 30 meters of the boy, the province of Utrecht reported.

The incident allegedly happened on the Voskuilerdijk. The boy claims that he was cycling to school when ten wolves came out of a nearby bush before standing around him. The fright caused the boy to fall off his bike.

A passing driver honked his horn, which scared the wolves away, the boy said. The boy cycled home after this.

The Dutch Mammal Society analyzed the incident at the request of the province of Utrecht. Except for the boy’s statement, there is no other evidence, like DNA or camera footage, to prove this happened. The driver has also not come forward.

"What exactly happened cannot, therefore, be reconstructed according to the Mammal Society," the province said. But if the incident unfolded as this report indicates, there was no immediate danger, the province reported.

If the incident is true, the wolves are likely from the pack on Heuvelrug, Utrecht, where a maximum of seven wolves are living. "The fact that the boy thinks there were ten or more does not alter that prediction because it would have been an impressive event for the boy."

The Mammal Society again advised tracking all wolves. They believe this could have provided faster and more accurate information in this incident.

This was confirmed by the responsible deputy, Mirjam Sterk, during a committee meeting on Wednesday. The province is working on a license to catch, sedate, and track the pack of wolves on the Heuvelrug. The license was initially only requested for one wolf, which specialists claimed was causing trouble.

Sterk said that the province wants to use transmitters to get information about the animals so that action can be taken quickly if necessary.

SGP States Member Bertrick van den Dikkenberg said that these types of issues should not be taken lightly. Sterk replied by saying that this is certainly not the case. She said that she had contacted the boy's father about the Mammal Society's analysis and expressed commitment.

Arne Schaddelee of the ChristenUnie said that it is also important to take this into context. "What happened is very intense, and it is good to look at it in a healthy and critical way," Schaddelee said about the incident in Woudenberg. "But at the same time, we must also let the facts speak. And one of the facts is that

no one has been fatally injured by the wolf in Europe for 40 years."

The province of Utrecht is advising children who are cycling through the forest areas to cycle in groups. “For kids younger than ten, the advice is to always have an adult cycle with you.”

The Islamic Paradox in Germany > Muslim lunatic protected by courts - existential danger to Germans

Germany: Muslim migrant who beheaded man won’t be

deported, ‘no guarantee that he will be treated properly’

Did Mursal Mohamed Seid treat Alex K. properly? By his lights, he did: “When you meet the unbelievers, strike the necks…” (Qur’an 47:4)

Migrant who beheaded his victim and caused his intestines to spill out while still alive could avoid deportation from Germany ‘because he will probably just come back from Somalia'

by Miriam Kuepper, Daily Mail, August 16, 2024:

A migrant who beheaded his victim and caused his intestines to spill out while he was still alive could avoid deportation from Germany – because prosecutors think he would just come back from Somalia.

Mursal Mohamed Seid, 24, killed his 52-year-old flatmate Alex K. in a homeless shelter in the Bavarian town of Regen in July 2021.

He stabbed his victim 111 times with a knife before beheading him. Seid later told investigators that he believed his flatmate was possessed by two demons he had to kill.

The attack was so violent that the victim’s intestines spilled out while he was still alive, German media reported at the time.

Seid is said to have committed the crime in a schizophrenic delusion and was therefore placed in the high-security ward of the district hospital in Mainkofen, Bavaria.

German immigration authorities want to deport him back to his native Somalia as soon as possible, but the prosecutors are hesitant to issue a deportation order because they think the criminal would return to Germany anyway, tabloid Bild reports.

That may be, but then you could arrest him and keep him off the streets, keeping Bavarians safe. Is that not the goal here?

Just a few weeks after he killed his flatmate, the Somalian tried to escape the high-security ward of a hospital in Bavaria where he is being held by hiding in a food cart.

Seid made a second escape attempt last week and managed to evade his female minders – a psychologist and an intern – while attending the family screening of a Disney film a week ago.

He was on the run for eight hours before the 100 police officers deployed for the search caught him three miles away from the cinema.

Prosecutors have been examining whether Seid’s sentence in the secure hospital ward could be waived for him to be deported back to Somalia for two years.

Senior public prosecutor Oliver Baumgartner told Bild: ‘The prescribed overall assessment must include, among other things, the seriousness of the crime, the dangerousness of the convicted person and the likelihood that the convicted person will return to Germany.

‘In this regard, it was necessary to take into account that the convicted person would be free in his home country and that there is no guarantee that he will be treated properly. A return to Germany was considered possible.’

What kind of twisted logic is that?  He would be free in Somalia, but they are worried he might be mistreated. No concern about the victim of his horrific crime, or the potential victims of his next mental breakdown in Germany. So protective of insane Muslims and so careless with innocent Germans. What madness!

While the prosecutors are hesitant about signing the deportation order, Said [sic] also wrote a letter saying he refuses to be deported to Somalia in February….

Bits and Bites from around the World > Mad sheep kills aged owners in N.Z.; NC fools pull bear cubs out of tree for selfies

Aggressive sheep kills New Zealand couple,

leaving community shocked

New Zealand police confirmed a ram, similar to the one pictured, was shot after officers were called to a property where two older people were found dead. Getty Images

An aggressive sheep was shot and killed after it was determined to be responsible for the deaths of an older New Zealand couple.

A man went looking for his mother and father Thursday after not hearing from them for a few days. The couple, both in their 80s, lived at a rural rented property in Waitākere, West Auckland.

When he entered the property’s paddock, he found both of his parents, Alfred Helge Hansen, 82, and Gaye Carole Hansen, 81, dead.

According to the New Zealand Herald, authorities believe the man was killed when he went out to feed the ram. His wife suffered the same fate when she went out to check on her husband.

A statement from police said they discovered the bodies around 7:30 a.m. local time. They found the ram in the paddock when they arrived.

They said another person at the scene had also “suffered a minor injury after being attacked by this ram,” and that when police arrived at the scene, “they too were confronted and approached by the ram.”

Police said they shot and killed the aggressive animal at the scene.

Dean Burrell, the nephew of one of the dead and family spokesperson, told news outlet Stuff that the couple had “both lost their lives in a tragic accident.”

“They’re good people. They’re over 80. They don’t deserve this,” he said.

“Everyone is in shock as to what’s happened. They are very upset.”

Police are investigating the deaths on behalf of the coroner “to establish the full set of circumstances around what occurred in the paddock,” and a postmortem examination will be carried out on Friday.

People caught on video trying to pull

bear cubs from tree to take selfies

Several people were filmed pulling a black bear cub out of a tree and trying to grab another in Asheville,
N.C., on Tuesday.

File this under: “A good way to get yourself killed.”

An investigation is underway after a group of people (with an apparent death wish) were filmed pulling black bear cubs out of a tree in North Carolina in an effort to take a round of selfies with the baby animals.

The unsettling incident, which went down in Ashville, N.C., Tuesday afternoon, was captured by onlooker Rachel Staudt, who turned her camera to a group of six people outside an apartment complex.

The group is seen approaching a wooded area behind a fence near the building. At first, the bear cubs are obscured by the tree’s leaves, but as the group gets closer some people can be seen tugging two bear cubs from their perches, yanking them from branches.

One woman is seen holding onto a cub like a small child, while another person snaps photos.

“She’s holding it up. She’s holding a bear,” an eyewitness can be heard saying. “The other guy’s grabbing the other one.”

The woman then drops the cub and chases it as it tries to run away.

Authorities were notified after the incident was reported to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, local outlet WLOS reported. A special projects biologist for the commission found only one cub at the scene, which she said is currently at a rehab facility and will be released back into the wild, the outlet reported.

“We do think that the bear probably had a pretty traumatic experience,” biologist Ashley Hobbs told the outlet.

“We did follow up with the people who pulled the bear out of the tree,” she continued. “We did confront them on site that day and let them know how irresponsible and potentially deadly it could be for that cub to be separated from its mom, especially ripped out of a tree like that.”

It is never acceptable to interact with wildlife in such a way, Hobbs said, expressing her frustration over a stunt pulled for social media clout.

“It’s not uncommon to get calls this time of year about cubs being alone, but certainly, we don’t usually have people go out and start pulling them out of trees to take selfies with them,” she told the Citizen Times.

In a press release, the wildlife commission stated a bear cub bit one of the people during the interaction.

They are fortunate the mother didn't bite them, or rip their head off. Sensational stupidity! If that mama bear had returned, those fools would all be in the hospital fighting for their lives, or, perhaps making the new list of Darwin awards.

“The cub appeared to be lethargic and frightened. It looked to be favoring one of its front paws and was wet and shivering,” Hobbs said in the release.

Only one bear was located. Hobbs said it’s her hope that the other cub was reunited safely with its mom. Mama bears will often leave their cubs in a safe place while they forage for food, but if a cub is separated from its mother for too long, it could die.

Also, Hobbs said, mother bears are extremely protective of their babies and the group put themselves in a “dangerous situation.”

“I tried telling them to stop, but they wouldn’t listen so I thought recording it might help get justice for the sweet bear cub,” Staudt told the Citizen Times.

“I’m not sure how long it went on for, but far too long.”

Officials said the group of selfie-takers were given a “stern” talking to about how dangerous it is to interact with bear cubs.

Surely there is a law about mistreatment of wild animals in North Carolina.

Drugs and Kids > Germany legalizes Marijuana 'even though it is dangerous'!

Germany needs to get ready for an increase in Emergency Room visits from children. It has happened everywhere else pot was legalized. Western governments seem more concerned with keeping potheads stoned than keeping children safe and alive. Children have no voice in governments, and so are largely ignored.

Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The German legislature has passed a measure Friday legalizing cannabis for adults but restricting its sale to specific cannabis clubs. The legislation passed the Bundestag 407-226.

The law will also allow for adults to smoke cannabis in some public spaces, but specifically bars it from places like playgrounds.

Adults will be allowed to possess up to 25g of cannabis in public and up to 50g in private residences. The cultivation of up to three cannabis plants in a private residence will also be allowed.

Even if small children are present?

An earlier version of the planned legalization would have seen commercial distribution, but the approach was scrapped in favor of a "cannabis social club," model, which will require those wishing to legally purchase cannabis to join clubs, which will be capped at 500 members.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach warned that while marijuana is now legal for adults, it still carries associated risks.

"Nobody should misunderstand this law: cannabis consumption is being legalized, but that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous," said Lauterbach.

Lauterbach said the objective of the legislation, for which he has been a strong advocate, is "to crack down on the black market and drugs-related crime."

Black market and drug gangs don't pay taxes. Follow the money!
