Politics in Europe > AfD to lean a little less to the far-right; Rutte on magic mushrooms? - Medvedev

Germany’s AfD to soften stance on migrants — Bild

The right-wing party has reportedly axed talk of ‘remigration’ and ‘German guiding culture’ from its program to woo moderate voters
Germany’s AfD to soften stance on migrants — Bild

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has softened its anti-immigration rhetoric in a bid to appeal to moderate voters and prove itself capable of forming a government down the road, the outlet Bild has claimed.

Founded back in 2013, the right-wing party has steadily gained in popularity amid the continuing migrant crisis in Germany. It finished second in the federal elections in February, winning 152 seats in the 630-seat Bundestag. In April, a survey by the pollster Forsa indicated that it enjoyed the support of 26% of respondents, ahead of all the other parties in Germany.

In an article on Saturday, Bild claimed to have seen a new seven-point policy paper that the AfD’s parliamentary group was expected to adopt that same day.

Conspicuously absent from the document are calls for the “remigration” of German residents with a migrant background, as well as an insistence on the “German guiding culture,” according to the outlet.

Bild claimed that the terms had specifically been axed from the party program in order to “reach more moderate voters,” and “appear capable of governing by the next federal election” in 2029. Aside from these purported changes, the AfD also reportedly intends to adopt a code of conduct for its lawmakers in the Bundestag.

The party’s interim goal is to gain ground in next year’s regional elections, Bild reported.

The media outlet claimed that the updated program calls for an end to asylum-granting to refugees at the border, tougher naturalization requirements and less social welfare for migrants.

The party also reportedly seeks to slash taxes, lift a self-imposed ban on the use of nuclear power plants, and restore the Nord Stream pipelines. The conduits, which used to carry Russian natural gas, were destroyed by a targeted underwater explosion in 2022. Berlin has since ruled out restoring them to operation.

According to Bild, the right-wingers want Germany’s foreign policy to be guided by the motto “Germany first,” which would presumably entail an end to weapons deliveries to Ukraine and the lifting of sanctions against Russia.

In a post on X on Sunday, the AfD Bundestag group revealed that its members had convened for a “closed meeting” over the weekend to set “political goals for the coming period.”

The party was declared a “confirmed right-wing extremist entity” by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency in May, only for the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) to suspend the label shortly thereafter.

NATO chief ‘on magic mushrooms’ – Medvedev

The former Russian president has mocked Mark Rutte over his claim that China might ask Russia to attack the bloc’s European territory
NATO chief ‘on magic mushrooms’ – Medvedev

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has mocked NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte for suggesting that Beijing might ask Moscow to attack NATO territory in Europe as a diversion if China decides to make a move on Taiwan.

Rutte, speaking to the New York Times on Saturday, said Chinese President Xi Jinping may tell his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin: “I’m going to do this, and I need you to keep them busy in Europe by attacking NATO territory.” He also urged stronger NATO defenses, warning that “if we don’t, we’ll have to learn Russian.”

“SG Rutte has clearly gorged on too many of the magic mushrooms beloved by the Dutch,” Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said on X on Saturday. “He sees collusion between China & Russia over Taiwan, and then a Russian attack on Europe. But he’s right about one thing: he should learn Russian. It might come in handy in a Siberian camp,” Medvedev joked, hinting at the harsh conditions at the region’s remote prison camps.

Beijing, which considers Taiwan its own territory under its One China policy, has repeatedly demanded that the US and its allies stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. Washington, however, continues to supply weapons to Taiwan.

Russia supports the Chinese position, condemning Western arms sales and diplomatic visits to the island. Moscow has also repeatedly dismissed claims that it plans to attack NATO, calling such statements baseless and part of Western scaremongering.

The Kremlin has maintained that “these are simply attempts to create an artificial external enemy in order to justify such a militaristic line to militarize Europe.” Russian officials have also argued that European NATO countries are using the supposed Russia threat to deflect from their own domestic problems. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the “old horror story about the Russian bear” an easy excuse in light of economic stagnation and falling standards of living in Europe.

At its recent summit, NATO members discussed increasing defense spending targets to 5% of GDP, though no formal agreement was reached. Some European nations expressed concern that such a level would be a heavy financial burden, potentially straining domestic budgets and public support for defense policies.

Yeah, but it would make western war industry oligarchs sooooo filthy rich!!!

Military Madness > Is it Taiwan or the Pentagon that is the biggest threat to the world? NATO want to start WWIII from Romania - Georgescu (Tucker Carlson); Europe insanely still pouring Billions into Ukraine

With wars winding down in Ukraine, and the Middle East, the Pentagon is looking for a new setting for the next proxy war. Taiwan seems to be the favoured location, with China the opponent. That ought to keep the War Industry inventories moving. But what about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization? How do they fit in the South Pacific?

Pentagon names biggest threat in ‘secret memo’ – WaPo

Preparing for a conflict over Taiwan should be prioritized over any other potential threats, a document signed by Peter Hegseth reportedly says
Pentagon names biggest threat in ‘secret memo’ – WaPo

A newly issued internal Pentagon document setting priorities for the US armed forces reportedly calls for focusing on preparing for a potential conflict with China and leaving all other potential “threats,” such as Russia and Iran to America’s allies, the Washington Post has claimed.

The nine-page paper, dubbed the Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance, effectively narrowed down the US defense strategy in the Indo-Pacific region to a single scenario that would require the American military to prevent Beijing from establishing full control over Taiwan through military means, according to WaPo.

How does Taiwan fit under the classification of National Defence?

“China is the Department’s sole pacing threat, and denial of a Chinese fait accompli seizure of Taiwan — while simultaneously defending the U.S. homeland is the Department’s sole pacing scenario,” the “secret” document obtained by the media outlet said. According to WaPo, Beijing was named as the only potential enemy in a “major power war” that Washington needs to plan contingencies for.

That's an amazing dismissal of the great threat of Russia invading Europe? Is anyone in Europe paying attention?

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has previously described China as the main defense priority for the US. Beijing also expressed its concerns about a shift in Washington’s approach to Taiwan after the US State Department dropped from its fact sheet a statement on not supporting the island’s independence. China considers the self-governing island an inalienable part of its territory and most of the world adheres to Beijing’s stance.

Apart from a potential conflict with China, the paper also tells the military to focus on the threats from the “near abroad” and be “ready to defend American interests wherever they might be threatened in our hemisphere, from Greenland, to the Panama Canal, to Cape Horn.” The US Army should also shift its counterterrorism activities to fighting groups capable of striking the US directly and deprioritize those that are only active in far away regions, the WaPo reported.

Other potential “threats” supposedly posed by nations such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea should henceforth be dealt with by US allies, the document reportedly states. In particular, it says that Washington is unlikely to provide any substantial assistance to its allies in Europe in case of a confrontation with Russia.

Astonishing! 75 years of agreements between allies just dismissed. Who would ever make another agreement with America without a gun to their head?

The document calls for European NATO members to significantly increase their share of the collective defense burden that would supposedly “ensure NATO can reliably deter or defeat Russian aggression even if deterrence fails and the United States is already engaged in, or must withhold forces to deter, a primary conflict in another region.”

Moscow has repeatedly stated that it has no intention to attack the US-led bloc but warned that NATO’s active involvement in the ongoing Ukraine conflict poses a risk of a direct confrontation with Russia.

NATO needs Romania to launch WWIII

– Georgescu

Calin Georgescu has claimed his opposition to the supposed plans led to his candidacy being invalidated by the “globalist mafia”
NATO needs Romania to launch WWIII – Georgescu

Calin Georgescu, a former Romanian presidential candidate whose bid was controversially invalidated earlier this year, has claimed that NATO wants to “launch World War III from Romania.” In an interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson, he said his staunch pro-peace stance was among the main reasons why he was barred from running for president.

The right-wing politician, known as an outspoken critic of NATO, the EU, and Western support for Ukraine, scored a surprise win in the first round of November’s presidential election, receiving 23% of the vote. However, the country’s Constitutional Court swiftly moved in to annul the result over alleged “irregularities” in his campaign. Later, Georgescu was stripped of his right to run for office.https://twitter.com/i/status/1910377980519493985

Appearing on Carlson’s podcast on Thursday, the former Romanian presidential candidate alleged that NATO wants to “launch… World War III from Romania.” The politician cited the fact that the “largest military base of NATO is in Romania,” coupled with the 380-mile (612 km) long border that his country shares with Ukraine.

“In this situation of course Romania is the asset for [the] European Union, for [French President Emmanuel] Macron in order to launch the war,” Georgescu insisted.

“They want to turn NATO [into] an offensive force” and are “pushing for war,” he alleged, adding that “my position was exactly against them.”

According to Georgescu, “all my campaign was just concentrate[d] on peace[.] When I said… the word ‘peace’, they immediately alerted… because they need war.”

The right-wing politician went on to say that the “majority of Romanian people… have this position against any intervention and any participation [in] war.”

“I was denied [the right to run for president] by the globalist mafia,” the former candidate alleged, further claiming that the people behind the invalidation of his candidacy were the same people who attempted to derail Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in the US, using similar smear tactics.

Appearing on ‘The Shawn Ryan Show’ in January, Georgescu similarly suggested that NATO military infrastructure in Romania could be used to launch a major offensive against Russia.

Bucharest, a NATO member since 2004, has been expanding the MK Air Base to make it the largest NATO installation in Europe.

Moscow has described the base as “anti-Russian” and warned that it would be among the first targets for retaliatory strikes in a military conflict.

Germany leads allies in $24B military aid package for Ukraine

April 11 (UPI) -- Western allies want a "militarily strong Ukraine," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Friday, as his country pledged $12.4 billion in military aid, part of a larger combined $24 billion allied commitment.

The new allocation of funds runs until 2029 and includes a $5.8-billion commitment from Britain, which was announced at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

The UDCD is made up of all 32 NATO members, plus 25 other countries and the European Union which all support Ukraine's defense militarily.

"We need a militarily strong Ukraine," Pistorius said Friday.

"Only then can negotiations lead to a just and lasting and peace settlement."

Much of Germany's contribution will go towards air defense, guided missiles and ammunition for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

British Defense Secretary John Healey called 2025 a "critical year" in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, adding that allies see no end in sight to the war, which has been going on for more than three years.

U.S. President Donald Trump's pledge to negotiate a cease-fire has so far not come to fruition.

Earlier in the week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country has evidence of at least 155 Chinese nationals fighting for Russia in the conflict.

Britain and Norway's commitment relates largely to radar and air defense, with Healey calling it a priority Friday.

"In our calculations, 70% to 80% of battlefield casualties are now caused and inflicted by drones," he told reporters.

The money will also help buy drones and anti-tank mines and fun vehicle repairs.

Britain's commitment announced Friday is part of a larger $5.8 billion package announced earlier in the year.

Military Madness > Finland's Largest Purchase Ever - F-35s; US Supplies Ukraine with Missiles & Rocket Launchers; Holds Off on Another $200mn in Weapons; China Digs-in on Taiwan

Russia’s neighbor to splash €10bn on F-35 fighter jets in record deal

Finland has struck a deal with America’s Lockheed Martin to buy a total of 64 F-35 fighter jets. The Finnish media is calling the €10 bn contract the largest of its kind in the country’s history.

The US jets are scheduled to replace Finland’s Hornets, which will be gradually decommissioned beginning in 2025. With its decision, the Scandinavian country has joined nations like Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy and Poland, which also opted for the American-made combat aircraft.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 was competing with jets manufactured by Saab AB, Dassault Aviation, and Boeing, as well as the European Eurofighter Typhoon.

The whopping €10 bn contract reportedly covers not only the procurement of the jets but also the creation of technical and training infrastructure in Finland, spare parts, and weapons.

The decision was announced on Friday, with the defense minister, Antti Kaikkonen, saying that “when comparing military performance, the F-35 best met our needs.”

The battle between major arms manufacturers for the Finnish contract broke out back in 2015, when it became known that the country’s air force started looking for a replacement for the ageing fighter jet fleet it had bought from an American company, McDonnell Douglas, in the early 1990’s.

F-35 is a single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft. Its first iteration took wing back in 2006, entering service with the US Marine Corps nine years later.

However, the F-35 rollout and usage has been met with criticism even at home, with its price tag and operational costs among the prime complaints. With a single jet costing the US government some $36,000 for every hour it spends in the sky, the Department of Defense is reportedly considering launching a new, less expensive project to fill the roles which do not require the F-35’s level of avionics.

Back in July, General Charles Quinton Brown Jr., the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, was cited by the media as saying the following: “You don't drive your Ferrari to work every day, you only drive it on Sundays. This is our 'high end' [fighter], we want to make sure we don't use it all for the low-end fight.”

Unless the Ferrari is the only car you have!

Just last month, a British F-35 crashed off an aircraft carrier into the sea during a routine exercise mission. Thankfully, the pilot managed to eject and did not sustain serious injuries.

Aside from the phenomenal costs, the F-35 has been criticized for reliability issues. It's astonishing that so many Nordic countries that are so concerned about climate change and CO2 emissions would buy the world's worse aviation polluter. I wonder if Greta will have something obscene to say about that?

US delivers rockets to Ukraine's Donbass Region provoking Russia

Now, what could possibly go wrong here? Is the sale of rockets to Ukraine worth the risk of provoking Russia. What madness!

The Pentagon has disclosed details of the shipment of anti-tank missile systems and projectiles supplied to Kiev, as Moscow grows increasingly concerned about the prospect of a full-blown conflict in Ukraine’s Donbass region.

In a statement received by Russian news outlet TASS on Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Anton Semelroth said that “the $60 million package… included 30 Javelin command and control launchers, as well as 180 missiles.” According to him, the rocket launchers were delivered to Ukraine on October 23.

“In 2021, the US allocated more than $450 million in aid to Ukraine for security tasks as part of our continued commitment to support the country’s ability to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the spokesman added.

And, not to mention, to buy American made weapons. You understand here that America is sending your tax dollars to Ukraine so they can send them right back to American weapons oligarchs. This is basically transferring money from the middle class to the super-rich while they risk your lives so-doing.

Semelroth’s comments come amid warnings from Moscow over tensions in the war-torn region close to Russia’s borders. Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that “more and more forces and equipment are being accumulated on the line of contact in the Donbass, supported by an increasing number of Western instructors.”

At the end of November, the top diplomat said that claims Ukraine’s troops had deployed American-made Javelin rocket launchers were a matter of grave concern and could lead to a full-blown offensive in the war-torn region.

“In recent weeks, we have seen a stream of consciousness from the Ukrainian leadership – especially when it comes to the military – that is excessively inflamed and dangerous,” Lavrov said.

Just hours before, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Kirill Budanov, revealed that advanced US-made Javelin systems had been tested by Ukraine’s troops and were being used by soldiers in the Donbass.

Russia’s ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, warned the White House earlier in November that supplying Ukraine with deadly armaments could diminish hopes for peace in the region, stating that Moscow believes “another opportunity to encourage Kiev to stop the war has been missed.”

Indeed, it encourages them to continue the war. All the more weapons to sell!

The conflict in eastern Ukraine began following the events of the 2014 Maidan, which eventually led to the ‘People’s Republics’ in Donetsk and Lugansk declaring their independence. However, neither Moscow nor Kiev officially recognize them, and the Kremlin has insisted that the onus is on Ukraine to strike a peace deal with the leaders of the breakaway regions.

US holds off on $200mn military aid package to Ukraine – report

The US has decided against delivering a major military aid package to Kiev amid renewed tensions surrounding Ukraine, a report from NBC News has claimed. It follows a week of frenetic trans-Atlantic diplomacy around the issue.

The White House had prepared a package of $200 million worth of additional military assistance to the East European country, the network reported on Saturday, citing the customary anonymous sources "familiar with the matter."

NBC insists that the US has other options for helping Ukraine, including a much larger aid package that could be approved “in the event of [a] further incursion by Russia.”

The network quoted three people it said were "familiar' with the matter as indicating that the White House delayed a shipment of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine in an effort to defuse tensions and “retain leverage in the case of a Russian attack on Ukraine.”

Western officials and media have been accusing Russia of amassing troops and military hardware with the intention of attacking Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusations, and insists that its military maneuvers – all taking part on its own soil – are defensive in nature. However, it pointed out that military action could be undertaken if Kiev makes a “provocation.”

US President Joe Biden spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky over the phone on Thursday, discussing military matters, among other things. Biden reiterated Washington’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Moscow has accused Kiev of endangering the safety of navigation and violating maritime rules in the Sea of Azov, near Crimea, after a Ukrainian naval vessel sailed close to the Kerch Strait late Thursday evening. Ukraine denied any wrongdoing, accusing Russia of “disinformation.”

Biden discussed the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin via video link on Tuesday, and called for a de-escalation. According to the Kremlin, Putin told his American counterpart that Russia seeks guarantees that NATO will not expand further eastward and move closer to his country’s border.

Chinese state-run media says Beijing ready to use force against US

A Chinese state-run media outlet has warned Washington that Beijing will not hesitate to strike US forces should they try to prevent China’s reunification with Taiwan, as promised recently by a top American official.

The Global Times picked up on National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s statement on Tuesday, in which he said that the US was “going to take every action that we can take, from the point of view of both deterrence and diplomacy” to prevent a scenario where China takes over Taiwan militarily. The message was echoed the same day by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who warned China that a military scenario vis-a-vis Taiwan would be a “very serious mistake.”

However, the Chinese outlet surmised that Sullivan’s assurances should not be construed as a “manifesto of US policy,” as the “US simply cannot build a deterrent to prevent the Chinese mainland from carrying out reunification by force when necessary.” The op-ed goes on to claim that Washington does not really have the “will to defend Taiwan at all costs.”

The article takes a yet more bellicose turn when it says it is “credible” that US troops, should they come to Taiwan’s rescue, would be “heavily attacked” by the People’s Liberation Army if “reunification by force” does happen. The Global Times predicts Sullivan would be likely to “recall or downplay” his statement later, since the “US cannot afford” to defend Taiwan “at the cost of a deadly war.”

The op-ed warns that “reunification by force will definitely happen” unless Washington convinces Taiwan authorities to accept the concept of ‘one country, two systems’ and engage with mainland China “on the path of peaceful reunification.”

The article blames Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which came to power in 2016, for the escalation, adding that the situation has possibly already gone beyond the point of no return.

The op-ed concludes by advising Sullivan to weigh his words carefully going forward and not to “have a big mouth,” lest he “create more embarrassment” for the US.

Beijing sees Taiwan as an inalienable part of China. However, the island considers itself independent since 1949, when the losing side in the Chinese civil war fled there as communist forces took over the mainland. While Taiwan is officially recognized by a little more than a dozen countries, it enjoys a strategic partnership with the US. Washington sells weapons to the island’s authorities and provides them with diplomatic support. Tensions between mainland China and Taiwan have been gradually escalating over the past few years, with Beijing staging massive military drills near the island.
