Up until Thursday, some people may have heard Ryan Wedding’s name but most were probably unaware of his existence.

The Canadian Olympian caught the world’s attention when the FBI alleged that he was the head of a cocaine ring and had been ordering hits in his home country from afar.

In the indictments, it was alleged that the cocaine ring he was involved in was moving 60 tonnes of cocaine per year.

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against 16 people on Thursday, including 10 Canadians in connection to a case it had dubbed Project Slalom.

Most have been arrested across North America, aside from Wedding and one other Canadian man.

Here is what we know so far about Wedding:

Salt Lake City Olympics

While Wedding was born in Thunder Bay, Ont., he was a resident of  Coquitlam, B.C., when he suited up for his country at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.

He competed in the Parallel Giant Slalom, finishing in 24^th place, well behind the leaders.

Initial fall from grace

In a release Thursday, the DOJ said the 43-year-old had been arrested in 2010 in California as part of a drug bust.

They did not say how long he served in connection with that case but they believe he resumed trafficking after he was released and had been protected by the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico, which was formerly run by Juan (El Chapo) Guzman.

RCMP and Halifax charges

Back in 2015, RCMP held a news conference in Halifax announcing that they had charged 15 people. including Wedding. after a two-year drug trafficking investigation.

At the time, they said that Operation Harrington had covered cocaine that was being imported into Canada from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and the United States.

They said police had seized more than 200 kilograms of cocaine, as well as, weapons and vehicles as a a result of the operation.

They also issued a warrant for the arrest of Wedding, who was said to be from Montreal at the time, on two counts of conspiracy to import cocaine, two counts of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, one count of trafficking in cocaine.

On Thursday, RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told reporters in Los Angeles that those charges “are unresolved.”

“El Jefe,” “Giant” and “Public Enemy”

On Thursday, American officials alleged that Wedding was the lead defendant, as they announced charges against 16 people.

The former Canadian Olympian was said to be heading up a cocaine ring for the past 13 years which was said to be a billion-dollar enterprise. The group was moving 60 tonnes of cocaine a year through Mexico and into Southern California before it was distributed into Canada and throughout the U.S.

Wedding and another Canadian, Andrew Clark, were also said to have ordered several hits in Ontario, one of which resulted in the deaths of a couple from Caledon. Police said the two victims were innocent and it was a case of mistaken identity.

The DOJ said he currently resides in Mexico, where his known aliases include “El Jefe,” “Giant” and “Public Enemy.”

On the lam

While Clark, who is known as ‘The Dictator’ in Mexico, has been arrested in that country, Wedding remains on the run.

The FBI has offered a US$50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and extradition to the United States.

France's counterterrorism prosecutor said on Wednesday that authorities thwarted three plots to attack the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris and other cities that hosted the events. The targets included "Israeli institutions or representatives of Israel in Paris", added the prosecutor.

French authorities foiled three plots to attack the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris and other cities that hosted the summer events, the national counterterrorism prosecutor said on Wednesday.

Olivier Christen said the plots included plans to attack “Israeli institutions or representatives of Israel in Paris” during the July 26-Aug. 11 Olympic competition. The prosecutor told broadcaster France Info that “the Israeli team itself was not specifically targeted.” He didn't give further details.

In all, five people, including a minor, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the three foiled plots against the Summer Games, which were held against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s war in Ukraine. The suspects are facing various terrorism-related charges while they remain in pretrial detention, the prosecutor said.

France was on its highest security alert in the months ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics, which wrapped up last week. During preparations for the Games, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin repeatedly warned that security threats included those from Islamic extremist groups, violent environmental activists, far-right groups and cyberattacks from Russia or other adversaries.

In May, members of the General Directorate of Internal Security arrested an 18-year-old man from Chechnya on suspicion of being behind a plan to attack Olympic soccer events that were held in the southern city of Saint-Etienne.

The planned attack was to target “bar-type establishments around the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium,” the prosecutor said. The suspect is accused of planning “a violent action” on behalf of the Islamic State group’s jihadi ideology.

Jihadists threats dominated the foiled plots and 80% of legal proceedings against suspects include the extremist ideology that still influences France’s youth, the prosecutor said. IS continues to “spread propaganda,” he added.

Preventive measures included increased house searches and house arrests before the start of the Olympics, the prosecutor said, adding that police and other security personnel conducted 936 house searches so far in 2024, compared to 153 last year. 

France also strengthened its airspace defences during the summer Olympics and Paralympics, deploying war planes, attack helicopters, surveillance aircraft, military and police drones among others to patrol the skies over Paris and the Mediterranean port city of Marseille that hosted sailing and soccer events. 

The French Air and Space Force completed more than 750 flight hours in 350 missions that resulted in 90 interceptions, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry on Wednesday. 

Most interceptions were civilian drones, the statement said, adding that 85 drone operators were arrested. They were mostly tourists unaware of the regulations in place during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the statement said. 

Two civilian drone operators were arrested for “delivering illegal equipment to a prison,” it added.

The cowardly, “degenerate” elements among the woke would never risk mocking Islam before the world at an Olympic event, as they did Christianity. They went over the top to smear Christianity in a foul parody of the Last Supper, featuring a salacious display of a scantily dressed man with drag queens prancing about around him. World leaders slammed Paris for the gross indiscretion. Among them was Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba, who was to represent Slovakia at the closing ceremony, but has now declined to do so.

The abomination was a full exhibit of unvarnished wokeism that Christians are expected to tolerate, since Christians are safe targets.

Slovakia’s deputy prime minister said he will not participate in the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics over the controversial Last Supper parody during the opening of the games last week.

The organizers of the Olympics in Paris prepared the abomination for the world a performance full of LGBT ideology and an insult to the symbols of Christianity, Tomas Taraba said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“I was supposed to represent Slovakia at the closing ceremony, but for the normal world, this Olympics will forever remain a symbol of degenerate decadence, which abused the beauty of sport and turned it into progressive political theater. Therefore, I decided not to participate in the closing ceremony,” he added.

The performance on Friday, led by drag queens and dancers, drew significant backlash from the Christian world, who said it was disrespectful to religious beliefs. Organizers have apologized for the performance.…

The Theater of the Absurd

It was also disturbing to me that as the drag queens and other characters danced lustily around the stage, there was a child in their midst. 

They also showed the beginning of the torch relay in Athens when a woman prayed to Zeus and other deceased demigods. The real God is a jealous God and will not easily forget the blasphemy.

Then there was the matter of a Muslim judo wrestler who refused to shake the hand of a Jew. He should have been disqualified if the games had any integrity left.

The next day, as the Israeli national anthem was played, hundreds of people yelled out "Heil Hitler" and waved Palestinian flags.

Then today, a vicious man, almost certainly Muslim, beat up a young Italian woman in an absurd boxing match.

While I feel sorry for the athletes, most of them, I cannot for the life of me bring myself to watch these games. I catch the odd highlight, other than that, I stay away from them.

A judo competitor representing Tajikistan refused to shake his Israeli opponent’s hand at the Paris Olympics and instead said “Allahu Akbar”.

Nurali Emomali later dislocated his arm in different fight, in an event, pro Israel supporters have described as “karma”.

Emomali, who won the match against Tohar Butbul, walked off the mat without making the respectful gesture to his Israeli opponent.

Instead, he chose to say “Allahu Akbar” while holding up a prayer symbol, known as the “Finger of Tawheed.”

The symbol refers to the Islamic belief that “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet.”…

Which, apparently, he did not repeat after his next match. Karma? I don't think so!

Poor sports like Emomali should be tossed from the Games and suspended from the next games. It is completely contrary to the Games standards.
