The Washington Post ran a story today, which calls into question whether global warming is man-made.

Two new studies offer a potential explanation: fewer clouds. And the decline in cloud cover, researchers say, could signal the start of a feedback loop that leads to more warming.

Researchers are still unsure exactly what accounts for this decrease. Some believe that it could be due to less air pollution: When particulates are in the air, it can make it easier for water droplets to stick to them and form clouds.

Another possibility, Goessling said, is a feedback loop from warming temperatures. Clouds require moisture to form, and moist stratocumulus clouds sit just underneath a dry layer of air about one mile high. If temperatures warm, hot air from below can disturb that dry layer, mixing with it and making it harder for wet clouds to form.

But those changes are difficult to predict — and not all climate models show the same changes. “It’s really tricky,” Goessling said.

The scientific papers cited in this article document that reduced aerosol particulates in the sky appear to be causing a decrease in low-cloud cover. This is because water surrounds such particulates and causes cloud formation. So the decreasing cloud cover, particularly in warmer regions, is causing temperatures worldwide to increase.

We are supposed to enter a period of low sunspot activity around 2030, which may result in actual cooling of the earth.

Unexplained Anomaly Weakening Earth’s Magnetic Field is EVOLVING and SPLITTING in Two, Warn Scientists

Could it be affecting our global climate?

The ESA has deployed its constellation of satellites to investigate unusual weaknesses in Earth’s magnetic field. It appears that the strange anomaly believed to be responsible is now evolving and splitting in two.

The unexplained force, referred to as the South Atlantic Anomaly, is an area of reduced magnetic intensity that extends from South America to southwest Africa.  

For now, the effects of this anomaly are restricted to technical malfunctions aboard spacecraft and orbital satellites. However, because Earth’s magnetic field shields us from solar winds and cosmic radiation, it’s a critical part of our planetary defence system, along with our atmosphere, which protects us from daily asteroid bombardment.

The European Space Agency (ESA) used its Swarm satellite constellation to study the phenomenon earlier this month, and the latest readings from the agency’s Data, Innovation and Science Cluster show a second anomaly is forming off West Africa. Researchers still don’t understand the risks associated with this more recent development.


Over the past 200 years, Earth’s magnetic field has lost around nine percent of its strength. Between 1970 and 2020, the minimum level of strength dropped from approximately 24,000 nanoteslas to 22,000.

Given that the field is generated by electrical currents produced among the swirling liquid iron in the planet’s outer core, fluctuations are normal. However, the initial South Atlantic Anomaly has grown and moved westward at a pace of roughly 20km (12 miles) per year and scientists are yet to fully determine the cause, which makes the fact that it now appears to be splitting in two all the more intriguing. 

“The new, eastern minimum of the South Atlantic Anomaly has appeared over the last decade and, in recent years, is developing vigorously,” says geophysicist Jürgen Matzka, of the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

“The challenge now is to understand the processes in Earth’s core driving these changes.”

No! It's not like you can do anything about what happens at the earth's core. You need to figure out how this affects our climate. If solar winds decrease, cosmic rays increase causing more cloud and cooler temperatures. If solar winds increase, it may be contributing significantly to global warming. 

Anyone smarter then I, that leaves lots of room, have any thoughts on this.

Indeed, the Earth’s magnetic field is known to flip the poles altogether every few hundred thousand years, and we are now long overdue such a flip. This recent unexplained magnetic activity over the Atlantic may be a sign of an impending flip, but more research is needed before we can understand what’s really going on with our planet and its defence systems.

Geoengineering - Another Lunatic Answer to Global Warming

As global carbon emissions continue to rise despite warnings from the scientific community, there's been increased interest in a controversial method to potentially mitigate the rise in Earth's temperature: Geoengineering. 

The conversation around geoengineering — or the deliberate manipulation of our environment — is gaining traction as climate projections remain dire.

Dire, but absurdly so.

Scientists, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), have repeatedly cautioned that emissions need to be rapidly cut in order to keep the world from warming 1.5 C or 2 C above pre-industrial times — the threshold that would result in widespread damage and suffering.

But with emissions still on the rise, some researchers are now calling for a closer look at more experimental measures, ones that could be pursued alongside emissions cuts.

One of the more popular forms of geoengineering is known as solar radiation management, or SRM.

But SRM is fraught with questions — both ethical and scientific.

There is more on this nonse.... ah, story, at CBC News, although I'm not sure it qualifies as news. 

Geoengineering, mostly cloud seeding, does address some of the real causes of global warming, not CO2 or other GHGs, (the far-and-away number one GHG is water vapour), but a decrease of clouds in the atmosphere because of solar activity. Solar activity, sunspots, create solar winds which intercept interstellar winds that contribute to create clouds. When sunspot activity is low, there is more cloudiness and cooler temperatures. That's why the coolest known periods in history are associated with solar minimums. 

This geoengineering idea actually seems to acknowledge this theory and proposes a possible solution. But it won't work! It might even appear to work but in the end it will probably be worse than anything the hyperbolic IPCC has imagined so far.

They are thinking of adding sulfur, or calcium carbonate to the atmosphere to increase cloud amounts. 

What will that do when it mixes with the air that we breath? Will we actually be able to breath it? 

What will it do when it rains on the earth and on our lakes and oceans? Will it affect the acidity or alkaline levels? Will it kill a bunch of fish leaving rivers and lakes dead? 

Will the surfer collect in our forests and turn our trees into giant match-heads? 

One of the great fears about global warming is the flooding of coast-lands. Most coastal flooding occurs near the mouths of rivers when river levels are high, tides are high and storm-surges occur.
Seeding clouds will result in sometimes significantly more rainfalls. These rainfall must eventually find their way to the ocean causing higher river and lake levels on their way. When they happen to reach the mouths of the great rivers, you better pray that it doesn't coincide with a storm or there will be flooding like we've never seen.

I question whether seeding clouds in one area will reduce the number of clouds in another area downstream. If you are removing moisture from the air, then fewer clouds can form downstream, increasing the solar radiation, the temperatures, and decreasing the rain/snowfalls. 

If the IPCC really wants to do something constructive, they should begin studying the real causes of global warming - sunspot activity, solar winds, the tilting of the earth on its axis (notice the rapidly moving magnetic north pole), and the course of the earth around the sun. Is anyone even measuring that?

Svensmark - Basically, his theory is that cosmic rays cause ions in the atmosphere which eventually contribute to cloud formation. Sunspot activity acts as an umbrella reducing the cosmic rays that reach the earth, thereby reducing cloud cover, resulting in warming temperatures. Periods of minimum sunspot activity correlate well with reduced cosmic rays and temperatures.

The IPCC was formed by the WMO and UNEP in 1988 with the mandate to study the man's affects on climate change. They were not given the authority to study non-anthropogenic global climate change, so they don't. Their computer models are restricted to perceived man-made effects. Hence, they ignore the main causes of global warming and amplify the anthropogenic effects. This is not science; this was a political decision.

The Other Side of the Solar Activity/Climate Change Debate

At the bottom of this article I present a brief note on the work of a Danish astrophysicist, and a link to his presentation, that I think you might find very interesting, if not a little technical.

The sun is quiet … very quiet.

In February, for the first time since August 2008, the sun went an entire month without any sunspots.

Sunspots are cooler regions of the sun. How many appear on the sun's surface depends on what cycle the sun is in. Every 11 years our star goes through a maximum, followed by a minimum (the entire magnetic cycle of the sun, when the poles flip, is 22 years).

Over the past three decades, the sun has been consistently dropping in activity. Maximum has been quieter than is typical; minimum has been particularly quiet. And this has caused some to make the false assumption that, as a result, Earth is going to cool.

The oscillations here are minor cycles while the overall trend is part of a major cycle.


It all stems from an incident that took place between 1645 and 1715, called the Maunder Minimum, where sunspots all but disappeared. This coincided with the "Little Ice Age" that stretched from 1500 to 1850 in the northern hemisphere. In England, the Thames River froze over; Viking settlers abandoned Greenland.

As a result, there have been strong suggestions that the Maunder Minimum caused the Little Ice Age, but some scientists warn that there were other contributors, such as increased volcanic activity.

On average, the sun produces 180 sunspots a cycle. The greatest ever was 285 in solar cycle 19; for solar cycle 24, so far it's been 116. 

So, with the decrease in solar activity, are we heading into another Maunder Minimum?

"No Maunder Minimum. Certainly no Little Ice Age," said David Hathaway, an astrophysicist who once headed NASA's solar physics branch at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "The next cycle looks like it's going to be very much like this one."

He explains that, while the sun does dim during a minimum, it's only by a tenth of a per cent, which translates into a tenth of a degree Celsius. And with the warming by about 1C  that we've seen due to climate change — and the warming that is to come — it's unlikely that we'll notice.

Different cycles
The sunspot cycle is also called the Schwabe cycle. At the moment we are at the end of cycle 24, heading toward 25. And scientists predict that this quiet trend is going to persist.

"There's been this steady decline," Hathaway said. "I'm fairly confident looking at our own predictions and predictions of others, that cycle 25 is going to be another small cycle."

But it's believed that the sun goes through many different cycles. Aside from the Schwabe, there is also one called the Gleissberg Cycle, where solar activity decreases roughly every 90 years.

And Hathaway said data over the past two centuries suggests that what the sun is now going through may be part of this cycle.

"We've now seen three or four of these modulations where we have small cycles, then they get bigger and then they get smaller again," he said. "We're at that bottom phase, where we haven't seen cycles this small in 100 years."

Hathaway said that he's probably seen thousands of satellites drop out of space as a result of solar activity causing drag.

"Skylab really opened up our eyes," Pesnell said.

Since then, there has been an increase in missions to study our star, including the Solar Dynamics Observatory, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, Hinode and the recently launched Parker Solar Probe.

So, are we in a minimum?
When astrophysicists talk about solar minimum, they're not referring to the quietest time on the sun, but rather to the sun coming out of its quiet time and and starting a new cycle.

Though February went without a sunspot, a tiny one appeared on March 5. However, it wasn't a sunspot that was part of the coming cycle.

Sunspots are magnetic and have both a north and south pole. One sign that a sunspot is part of a new cycle has to do how the magnetic field lines connect and this sunspot connects in the same pattern as the current cycle.

The sun doesn't rotate as a solid sphere. Instead, different parts of it rotate at different speeds. As a result, the magnetic field lines are stretched out. The magnetic field of the next cycle, instead being north-south would become east-west.

As well, there's the location.

"To be a cycle 25 spot, it's apt to appear at about 30 degrees latitude, Hathaway said. "This was at nine [degrees]. So this was definitely old-cycle."

However, both Hathaway and Pesnell believe that solar cycle 25 should begin sometime in 2020.

Some astrophysicists believe that the next cycle, the one beginning about 2031, will be very significant, perhaps approaching the level of the Maunder Minimum.

And when that happens, sunspot activity will increase. And as activity increases, we are almost certain to see more solar flares and coronal mass ejections, eruptions from the sun. While these eruptions are responsible for our beautiful northern lights, they can also cause power outages as was seen in Quebec in March 1989.

While Hathaway is officially retired, he continues to monitor our nearest star, to unravel its mysteries and better understand its effects on Earth.

"I continue to strive to understand this beast," Hathaway said.

Another astrophysicist stated recently that there is much more research that needs to be done in the area of cosmic rays effect on global warming.  Henrik Svensmark is a physicist and professor in the Division of Solar System Physics at the Danish National Space Institute in Copenhagen. He is known for his theory on the effects of cosmic rays on cloud formation as an indirect cause of global warming.

Basically, his theory is that cosmic rays cause ions in the atmosphere which eventually contribute to cloud formation. Sunspot activity acts as an umbrella reducing the cosmic rays that reach the earth, thereby reducing cloud cover, resulting in warming temperatures. Periods of minimum sunspot activity correlate well with reduced cosmic rays and temperatures.

Over the past 10,000 years, temperature fluctuations of up to 2 deg. C have been noted. Over the past several million years, temperature fluctuations of up to 10 deg. C have been determined to be associated with this effect. At least, that's the theory.

Basically, there is a lot more about global warming that we don't know, than that we know.
