EU scrambles to secure new energy suppliers to curb reliance on US

The bloc’s growing dependency on American LNG has sparked concerns amid fraying ties over Greenland

The EU is seeking new gas suppliers as growing reliance on US-sourced liquefied natural gas (LNG) and deteriorating relations with Washington have raised concerns over energy security.

The bloc has faced a surge in energy prices since reducing Russian oil and gas imports following the 2022 escalation of the Ukraine conflict. The shift away from comparatively inexpensive Russian pipeline gas has increased reliance on US energy, while legislation passed this week requires member states to halt all Russian deliveries by late 2027, leaving the EU exposed to supply risks.

Russia's NordStream pipeline still has one line functional and able to supply Germany with a boost to the crumbling economy at short notice. Do the Germans have the guts to trigger it? Not a snowball's chance in Hell.

Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen told reporters on Wednesday that “geopolitical turmoil” regarding Greenland has been a “wake-up call” for the region, which now relies on the US for more than half of its LNG supplies.

“There is a growing concern, which I share, that we risk replacing one dependency with another,” Jorgensen, Denmark’s representative in the European Commission, said. “We need to diversify it as much as possible,” he added, noting that he will travel to Canada, Qatar, and North African countries in the coming months to discuss supplies.

The autonomous Danish territory of Greenland has been at the center of a transatlantic rift since US President Donald Trump announced plans to annex it, citing its mineral wealth and strategic location, while initially refusing to rule out the use of force and threatening tariffs on opponents of the plan.

Trump has increasingly used energy as leverage in trade talks with the EU. Under a deal announced last July, the bloc agreed to buy $750 billion worth of US energy by 2028 to avert higher tariffs, a pledge critics call coercive.

Before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, the EU imported 45% of its gas from Russia – the bloc’s largest foreign supplier since the end of the Cold War. Western sanctions and sabotage of key infrastructure have slashed Russian gas deliveries; however, purchases of Russian LNG by the bloc remain significant.

Reacting to the EU’s recent decision to ban all Russian gas imports, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this could turn member states into Washington’s “miserable slaves.”

Germany’s criminal investigation into the destruction of the pipelines does not serve Poland’s interests, according to its national security chief

Germany is acting against NATO’s interests by continuing a criminal investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, Poland’s national security chief, Slawomir Cenckiewicz, has claimed, urging Berlin to shut down the probe.

The Nord Stream pipelines, which carried Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea, were severely damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022. Russia, which led the pipeline project, called the incident an act of state terrorism, while Western states including Poland applauded the bombings.

German prosecutors have attributed the sabotage to a group of seven Ukrainian nationals who allegedly used a small rented yacht to carry out the attack. Moscow has dismissed that version as “ridiculous,” maintaining that the scale and complexity of the operation point to state involvement.

Several suspects have so far been detained across the EU, including one in Poland and another in Italy, for allegedly blowing up the pipelines. However, Warsaw has refused to extradite the suspect held in Poland to Berlin.

Cenckiewicz told Financial Times it was in Poland’s interest to protect anyone connected to the operation, calling the German probe “a clear contradiction in interests between Poland and Germany.” He said the investigation “doesn’t make sense, not only in terms of the interests of Poland but also the whole [NATO] alliance.”

Only if NATO is responsible for this terrorist act which was an attack on Europe's natural gas supply, leaving it with having to purchase LNG from the USA at a much higher price. Europe is entering a recession partly because of that.

Cenckiewicz argued that pursuing the cases “serves Russian injustice” and demanded an end to the probe, adding that Poland will not extradite the detained Ukrainian suspects.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also opposed extradition, saying “the problem with Nord Stream 2 is not that it was blown up, the problem is that it was built.”

Meanwhile, Russian officials have insisted that a state actor was likely behind the sabotage and have accused Germany of concealing evidence and excluding Moscow from the inquiry.

In 2023, veteran American journalist Seymour Hersh published a report alleging that the US, under then President Joe Biden’s orders, orchestrated the sabotage using Navy divers with Norwegian support during the NATO exercise BALTOPS 22. Washington and Oslo have denied the claim.

US President Donald Trump has dismissed claims that Russia was behind the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines and suggested that the true culprit is widely known – without naming names.

Speaking at a White House press event, Trump said there was no need for a formal investigation to uncover who carried out the attack, which crippled a key energy route between Russia and Western Europe.

Three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, built to deliver Russian gas to Germany and the rest of Western Europe, were damaged by blasts at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in September 2022.

On Tuesday, a correspondent for libertarian financial blog ZeroHedge, which has been admitted to White House press events under the new administration, noted that Trump had previously rejected the Western narrative that Russia blew up its own pipelines, and asked the president if he was planning to initiate a probe to find out who was actually behind the attack.

“If you can believe it, they said Russia blew it up,” Trump responded. “Well, probably if I asked certain people, they would be able to tell you without having to waste a lot of money on an investigation. But I think a lot of people know who blew it up,” he added, without elaborating.

ZeroHedge suggested that Trump’s comment meant that “based on classified intelligence he knows exactly who was behind” the destruction of Nord Stream. It also “should put the ‘Russia destroyed its own vital and economically lucrative pipeline’ storyline to rest,” the outlet insisted.

In early February 2023, veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh published a report claiming that then US President Joe Biden had given the order to destroy Nord Stream. According to an informed source who talked to the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the explosives that were detonated on September 26, 2022 had been planted at the pipelines by US Navy divers a few months earlier under the cover of a NATO exercise called ‘Baltops 22’. The White House denied the report, calling it “utterly false and complete fiction.”

Senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have previously pointed the finger at the US as the possible culprit behind the Nord Stream explosions. They have argued that Washington had the technical means to carry out the operation and stood to gain the most, considering that the attack disrupted Russian energy supplies to the EU and forced a shift to more expensive US-supplied liquefied natural gas.

May 4 (UPI) -- An Israel-based Patriot air defense system is being moved to Ukraine to help in its ongoing battle against a 3-year-long Russian invasion, officials announced Sunday.

The system will be sent after it is refurbished, and Western allies have said Germany and Greece could also send an additional one.

The deployment of the Patriot system is a continuation of the previous administration's commitment to send more defense weapons to Kyiv. In September, Former President Joe Biden arranged a deal with Israel to send the missile defense system to Ukraine, before Donald Trump was re-elected.

Trump administration officials said "it continues to provide equipment to Ukraine from previously authorized" agreements, The New York Times reported.

The Trump administration has said in recent weeks that it wants an end to the war in Ukraine but the chances of a quick resolution have taken a hit in recent weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a drone attack on key Ukrainian infrastructure on the eve of a proposed cease-fire.

Kyiv media reported that four people have been killed and at least 30 more injured in a barrage of drone attacks in recent days, including 11 children.

"Air defenses shot down 69 drones, while 80 vanished from radars -- likely used as decoys to overwhelm Ukraine's defenses," the Kyiv Independent reported. "The assault was countered with electronic warfare units, aviation, anti-aircraft missile systems, and mobile fire groups."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said "a real cease-fire is necessary ... to bring the war to an end."

Russia is calling for a cease-fire May 9, the Independent reported.

Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Denmark is closing its investigation into the explosions that damaged the two Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in 2022, officials confirmed Monday.

Danish officials called their investigation "complicated and extensive," but said they would not comment further on the case.

Denmark's investigation was carried out by Danish police with assistance from the Norwegian Police Intelligence Service (PET).

"Based on the investigation, the authorities can conclude that there was deliberate sabotage of the gas pipelines. At the same time, it is assessed that there is no necessary basis for pursuing criminal proceedings in Denmark," the Danish daily newspaper Politiken quotes a joint release by the Copenhagen Police and PET as saying.

The news comes less than a month after Swedish officials announced they were wrapping up their probe into the series of explosions that damaged the two natural gas pipelines. Prosecutors at the time said the country lacked the proper legal authority to continue the investigation.

Why didn't they know that when they started? Who has legal authority to continue the investigation? Why is Russia the only country complaining about Europe abandoning its responsibilities?

Officials have previously declared the explosions and subsequent damage to the pipeline network were caused by "sabotage," but there have been several accusations surrounding who may have been responsible.

Russia has accused Western powers including Britain and the United States of carrying out the attack. The New York Times previously reported a pro-Ukraine group and intelligence official may have been behind the attack.

Ukraine doesn't have the capability of pulling off something like that, not by a long shot.

The pipelines are owned by Russia's Gazprom to carry Russian natural gas through the Baltic Sea to Germany.

This befuddles me! Germany knows full well who did it and though it cost German billions of dollars to replace the gas from Russia, they continue to play along with those who are responsible. Germany's government in the past ten years has been absolutely abominable

Only the Nord Stream 1 line was in service at the time of the explosion, with Germany halting work on line 2 before it became active in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Denmark's discontinuation of the investigation "close to absurd", according to Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti.
