16 killed, 20 abducted in Congo in attacks

blamed on IS-linked rebels

At least 16 villagers were killed and 20 other+s were abducted in northeastern Congo during attacks by militants with ties to the Islamic State group, a local civil society group said Friday.

The assailants with the Allied Democratic Forces staged a series of attacks on locals, some while working on their farmlands, between Wednesday and Friday in Ituri province’s Mambasa territory, said John Vulverio, coordinator of the New Civil Society of Congo.

The (death) toll remains provisional, as the fate of 20 others kidnapped remains unknown, he said.

Among those kidnapped in the attacks were the mother and sister of Gilbert Sivamwenda, a local government official, local media quoted the legislator as saying….


 


Suicide bomber kills 16 soldiers in southern Yemen

A suicide bomber has killed 16 Yemeni pro-government soldiers and wounded 18 others in a military post in the southern province of Abyan, local authorities have said.


The attacker “drove a booby-trapped car into a site for the security forces” in the Mudiyah district on Friday, said Mohamed al-Naqib, a spokesperson for the Southern Transitional Council (STC).

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed responsibility for the operation in a statement, saying a bomber detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device at the military post, according to US-based SITE intelligence group.

Formed in 2009 from the merger of Al-Qaeda’s Yemeni and Saudi factions, AQAP grew and developed in the chaos of the war in Yemen.

AQAP has been carrying out attacks in southern Yemen in recent years, often targeting forces affiliated with the STC, which is backed by the United Arab Emirates. In March, an attack claimed by AQAP killed two fighters in the Abyan province….

More Than 20 Killed in Deadly Bombings

MOGADISHU, Somalia (HORN OBSERVER)Over 20 people have been killed in a series of deadly bombings in Mogadishu and Afgooye on Saturday, marking a tragic day for Somalia.

One could argue that every day in Somalia is a tragic day.

In Mogadishu, the death toll from a double IED bombing at a teashop in Dayniile District has risen to 18, with more than 10 others injured, according to eyewitnesses. The blasts targeted a popular teashop where locals often gather to chew khat and relax in the afternoon. Among the victims were women working at the teashop….

Residents who arrived as first responders believe the IEDs were planted due to the teashop’s popularity with soldiers.

In a separate incident, at least four people were killed and several others injured in a bomb explosion at a khat market in the city center of Afgooye, approximately 30 kilometers from Mogadishu. Eyewitnesses reported that two bombs were likely hurled into the market as traders crowded the busy streets….
