Thousands of people crossed the border on Thursday to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, with crowds running through the gates, climbing the barriers and entering the territory.

Videos filmed on Tarajal beach showed people bypassing the breakwaters before heading towards the crossing point.

The authorities in Ceuta have asked the Spanish central government to declare a national state of emergency and to deploy the army to deal with this influx.

This latest crossing comes after a recent surge in attempts to reach the enclave, mainly by swimming, and is reminiscent of the border crisis of May 2021, when more than 8,000 migrants entered Ceuta in the space of two days.
