Terror threat to rise in UK as jailed Islamists are freed

by Charles Hymas, Telegraph, July 18, 2023:

The terror threat from jailed Islamists is set to rise this year as almost one a week is set to be released from jail, a new Home Office strategy has warned.

(I don't know what it means either).

Between 40 and 50 terrorists are due to be freed this year, posing a threat that could “last for decades,” according to the updated Contest counter-terrorism strategy published on Tuesday.

It warned that four of the nine declared terrorist attacks in the UK since 2018 were perpetrated by serving or recently released prisoners. As of March 2023, there were 232 people in jail for terrorism-connected offences but ministers are braced for a surge in releases this year after a series of successful prosecutions a decade ago.

“Those convicted of terrorism, or a related offence, may continue to pose a threat [on release],” said the report. “Despite ongoing efforts to mitigate the terrorist risk posed by individuals in custody, the vast majority will require long term risk management which may last for decades post release.”

The strategy, updated from 2018 and published by Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, warned that the terror threat is “rising” with “more attempts” to mount attacks expected from extremists.

The domestic threat stemmed from “individuals or small groups”, inspired or encouraged by established terror groups like Islamic State (IS) or Al Qaeda, but who were “less predictable” and harder for the security services and police to “detect and investigate”.

Prisoner releases imminent

There also remained a “persistent and evolving” threat from IS and Al Qaeda who were attempting to “strengthen their ability to carry out complex, directed attacks” on western countries including the UK.

The Home Office is understood to “fully expect” individual terrorists to use the small boat Channel crossings to try to sneak into Britain. It is understood they believe it is an “opportunity” that terrorists might want to exploit but there is no evidence of an organised attempt by terror groups to do so.

It is understood a “significant number” of terrorist prisoner releases are imminent, and in particular this year. They include the first British jihadists jailed after going to Syria in the early 2010s, and a terror gang caught in Operation Crevice over a plot to blow up the Bluewater shopping centre and the Ministry of Sound in 2004.

The Home Office is said to be “worried” over this year’s peak in releases, particularly through the second half of 2023. They include Yusuf Zubair Sarwa, who travelled to Syria intending on “martyrdom on the battlefield” and has been released from jail after nine years behind bars for joining a jihadi group….

It's too bad the government of the day didn't realize this was going to happen. How dumb can you be? But jihadists should all be declared insane, or, at least, traitors to the country and be locked up somewhere where they are segregated from sane societies until they renounce the Quran as being above the laws of the land.

Potential suicide attack prevented: Police take 27-y/o Syrian man into custody

Translated from “Potenzieller Selbstmordanschlag verhindert: Polizei nimmt 27-jährigen Syrer in Gewahrsam,”
by Sebastian Peters, Kreiszeitung.de, July 18, 2023

Harburg – On Friday, a spokeswoman for the police in Harburg confirmed that a 27-year-old man was taken into long-term custody after a large-scale operation to avert danger took place in the Harburg district.

The decision for this operation was made after an “indication situation” had arisen in cooperation with other authorities. According to a report in Der Spiegel, the police received information from a foreign secret service about a possible Islamist-motivated suicide attack. Just a few months ago, a foreign tip from a secret service also led to the arrest of a terrorist suspect in Hamburg.

Based on the information available, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution triggered the operation in a refugee accommodation in Tostedt. However, no explosives or weapons were found in the search.

According to Spiegel, the suspect taken into custody is said to be a Syrian who previously asked on social media to pray for him before unsubscribing from his profiles on all networks.

The police took the man into custody for eleven days. According to the Police and Regulatory Authorities Act of Lower Saxony, imprisonment can be imposed for up to ten days for pending crimes, and even up to fourteen days for terrorist crimes.

Perpetrator shouted ‘Allahu-akbar’: Syrians seriously injured

police officers at Nuremberg train station

With cries of Allahu akbar! At the main train station in Nuremberg, Germany, a Syrian (28) attacked several police officers with a broken glass bottle. A police officer (23) is so badly injured that he will probably not be able to work for a long time.

The Syrian injured three officers in his attack. The act was apparently so brutal that the homicide commission is investigating attempted manslaughter. An Islamist background is also not ruled out: the perpetrator shouted “Allahu akbar” several times during his attack. On Wednesday, the attacker is to be brought before a magistrate who will decide on a possible detention.

Perpetrator could be tied up

According to “Bild,” a witness had first alerted the police because a man on the tram island in front of the main train station mobbed passers-by and threatened them with a broken bottle. When officers arrived, the Syrian immediately attacked them. With the help of more police officers, the man could be stopped and tied up.
