The agreement will see a huge increase in the number of officers patrolling the beaches in northern France to stop the vessels leaving.

But while adamant overall migration numbers will fall, Mr Sunak could not guarantee this would happen next year.

The Prime Minister declared the pact could go further in the coming months as UK officers will be embedded with their counterparts in control rooms in the initial stages.

His comments come after he met French leader Emmanuel Macron last week at the Cop27 conference in Egypt to tackle the problem head-on, as the number of people crossing hit 40,000.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman travelled to France to finalise the deal this morning, where she met the country’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

The PM made a thinly-veiled comment aimed at Liz Truss - who caused fury in Paris over the summer when she said the jury was out whether or not Macron was a close ally, putting any deal in jeopardy.

Speaking as he travelled to the G20 summit in Indonesia, Mr Sunak said:  “Only by working with other countries can you make progress on the things that impact people at home.

“The best example of that is illegal migration and I raised it in my first meeting I had with President Macron, we spent time speaking about that when we were together in Sharm at Cop.

“I’m pleased we’re signing a new deal with the French, the highlights are a 40% increase in patrols happening and for the first time, British officials embedded in French operations to strengthen co-ordination and the effectiveness of our operation."

Three people were murdered and an additional six were wounded in a stabbing and car-ramming terror attack in Ariel’s industrial zone on Monday morning, several of them critically. The terrorist responsible for the attack was shot dead.

According to Hebrew-language media reports, a Palestinian man walked up to a security guard standing at the entrance to the Ariel Industrial Park and stabbed him multiple times.

Shortly afterwards, he is believed to have stabbed several more people at a gas station nearby. Footage from the gas station published online showed the terrorist approaching a man from behind and repeatedly stabbing him in the back. The assailant then stole a car and fled the scene, while security forces gave chase.

After driving a short distance, he exited the vehicle and stabbed two more people, before being shot. In footage from the scene posted to social media, it appears that the terrorist was shot by nearby armed civilians, and not security forces or police officers.

At some point, the attacker is believed to have intentionally rammed a person using his vehicle, which left the victim critically injured.

Israeli authorities did not reveal whether the attacker was affiliated with a specific terror group.

Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) paramedics said they had evacuated three victims in critical condition to Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikvah.

IDF forces are on the scene, searching the area to ensure that there are no additional perpetrators.

“On behalf of the Government and State of Israel, I send my condolences to the families of those murdered and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded,” Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement.

“We are relentlessly fighting terrorism with the full might of the IDF, ISA, and all the security forces. Recently, we have succeeded in dismantling extensive terrorist infrastructure and planning, but we must fight this war every day anew.

“Our security forces are working around the clock to protect the citizens of Israel and target terrorist infrastructure anytime, anywhere,” he said.

Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan blamed the outgoing Lapid government for the attack, saying that the terror incident demonstrated a “lack of governance and lack of deterrence.”

“The person who stands behind this wave of terror is the terrorist in a suit [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] Abu Mazen,” Dagan declared.

“The Israeli government must mark him as a security target. The Palestinian Authority is behind this wave of terror.”

A 24-year-old Syrian refugee has been sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison for providing material support to the Islamic State terror group as part of a plan to bomb a church in Pittsburgh, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Mustafa Mousab Alowemer, a Syrian refugee living in Pennsylvania who pleaded guilty in the Western District of Pennsylvania in September, will spend over 17 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, the DOJ said in a statement.

"Alowemer admitted to planning a deadly bombing of a Pittsburgh church in the name of ISIS," said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department's National Security Division.

"The defendant's plan to bomb a Pittsburgh church and risk death or injury to residents in the area in the name of ISIS" was thwarted by the Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force, said U.S. Attorney Cindy K. Chung for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Court documents say Alowemer plotted to bomb a church on the north side of Pittsburgh using an explosive device "to support the cause of ISIS and to inspire other ISIS supporters in the United States to join together and commit similar acts in the name of ISIS."

Alowemer also targeted the church, which he described as a "Nigerian Christian" church, to "take revenge for our [ISIS] brothers in Nigeria." He was aware that the explosion could kill numerous people near the church.

In May 2019, Alowemer distributed several instructional documents about making and using explosives and improvised explosive devices to an individual he believed was a fellow Islamic State supporter but an FBI employee, the DOJ said.

In or around June 2019, the convict purchased several items, including nails and nail polish remover, thinking they were needed to assemble a destructive device and "with the intention they be used to construct the explosives that would be detonated in the vicinity of the church."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Soo Song said the convict also identified other potential targets that included classmates and U.S. soldiers, according to The Associated Press. In court, Alowemer apologized to the church's pastor, congregation and nearby community.

"I understand the severity of my crime," he was quoted as saying. "I no longer think or act the way I used to. I no longer support ISIS."

The Islamic State is on the U.S. State Department's list of "Entities of Particular Concern," which signifies "actors that have engaged in particularly severe violations of religious freedom."

In August, a federal grand jury indicted Herman Leyvoune Wilson, aka Bilal Mu'Min Abdullah, 45, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State and establish an "Islamic State Center" in his state.

In July, Senior U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis of the Eastern District of Virginia sentenced a Canadian citizen, 39-year-old Saudi-born Mohammed Khalifa, to life imprisonment for aiding Islamic State and narrating its propaganda videos, including one that showed the beheading of American journalist James Foley.
