A 38-year-old man has been charged with uttering death threats and assault causing bodily harm after a Black man was assaulted in central Edmonton Wednesday in what police called a 'hate-motivated' attack.

A police news release Friday said the Edmonton Police Service hate crimes and violent extremism unit is recommending that Section 718.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada be applied in the case, allowing the courts to consider a harsher sentence if there is evidence the offence was motivated by hatred.

The release called the Wednesday morning attack a "hate-motivated incident." It was the third attack in 10 days that Edmonton police have described as hate-motivated.

A 41-year-old Edmonton man was charged in an attack on two women wearing hijabs outside the Southgate Centre shopping mall on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

A week later, police said a woman wearing a hijab was assaulted at the nearby Southgate LRT station by a 32-year-old woman who was charged with assault with a weapon.

Suspect assaulted Black man in his yard: police

In the latest incident, police said a 48-year-old Black man was walking on a residential street near his home in the Parkdale neighbourhood at around 10 a.m. Wednesday when another man approached him and began yelling racially motivated obscenities and death threats before pushing him.

Fearing for his safety, the complainant ran away, but the suspect gave chase, following him into his backyard and assaulting him, the police release said.

Northwest Division beat officers, in the area on an unrelated matter, saw the chase and with the help of a witness, located the residence in time to intervene in the attack and arrest the suspect.

Paramedics treated the complainant for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the men do not know each other

Joseph Gladue, 38, is charged with assault causing bodily harm and uttering death threats, police said.

Police believe Wednesday's attack is unrelated to the two incidents at Southgate Centre.

Except, perhaps, for motivation.

Rockets ‘targeting US embassy’ rain on Baghdad’s Green Zone

Multiple rockets have targeted the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Sunday evening. The US embassy’s C-RAM air defense systems were engaged to intercept the missile attack, which it said resulted in no casualties.

Footage published on social media show the night skies over Baghdad illuminated with flashes of light as rapid-fire guns of the US C-RAM systems were used to intercept the incoming projectiles. At least three rockets were targeting the American diplomatic missions, the Iraqi security officials told AP, saying they were launched by an “outlaw group.”

Most if not all of the rockets were apparently destroyed mid-air, and the US Embassy in Iraq later said that it resulted only in some minor property damage. The embassy then called on Iraqi leaders to prevent any such future attacks and to prosecute those responsible.

The C-RAM systems were deployed by the US to its embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone this summer. Earlier this year, the mission already saw a string of rocket attacks targeting the diplomatic facilities. Washington blamed the incidents on the Iran-aligned militia group Kataib Hezbollah.

The group’s commander was killed alongside Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a US air strike in early January. The US is now concerned about a potential uptick in the number of attacks by militant groups seeking to avenge the killing as the anniversary of the US strike draws near.

In early December, Washington announced it would pull some of its diplomatic staff from the mission in Baghdad to “minimize” the risks. In September, it also threatened to shut it down altogether, but never followed through on this threat.

Mother of 6 found dead in Samaria forest, skull smashed by rock

Esther Horgan had been declared missing by her family Sunday after not returning from a jog.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Terrorism is suspected in the death of Esther Horgan, 52, who was found in the early hours of Monday morning lying in a forest near her home in northern Samaria.

The mother of six had left the village of Tal Menashe to go for a run late Sunday morning. Her husband declared her missing at 8:00 p.m. when she had not yet returned and all contact with her was lost. Large forces of police and volunteers from search-and-rescue units as well as nearby villages started combing the area with the help of a helicopter.

Horgan’s body was found around 1:00 a.m. in the nearby Reihan Forest, her death apparently caused by a large rock striking her head.

One of the Magen David Adom paramedics on the scene said there was nothing to be done but declare her death.

“When we arrived, we were led to a place where a 52-year-old woman lay unconscious,” said Assaf Tapuhi. “We performed medical tests, she was not breathing, without a pulse and without any signs of life, and within a short time we had to pronounce her dead.”

While officially police are saying they only suspect that it was an act of Palestinian terrorism, Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan had no such inhibitions.

Calling the artist and marriage counselor a “precious woman, so full of kindness, of help to people,” he said, “she goes out to get some exercise in the middle of the day one minute from her house in the heart of Israel, and is murdered by savages in such a cruel way. And I ask, what kind of barbarians, like in the Middle Ages, are these, to smash the face of a 52-year-old woman with a rock in cold blood. What kind of evil are we facing?”

He then added, “Israel will triumph, they won’t break us.”

Defense Minister Benny Gantz said, “I share the deep grief of the Horgan family following the heinous murder of Esther, of blessed memory. Security forces are already working to get their hands on the heinous murderer. We will never accept a reality in which human life becomes cheap,” Gantz said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “The late Esther Horgan was brutally murdered when she went out for a run near her home. The security forces will apprehend the murderer as quickly as possible and we will settle accounts with him. I would like to send deep condolences to the family.”

In an interview with Channel 12, a relative, Eitan Naveh, eulogized Horgan as “Special, doing good for her whole environment, welcoming, always happy to help, everything she did was just good.”

Horgan leaves behind a husband, two daughters and four sons, the youngest of whom just turned 13 years old three months ago and celebrated his bar mitzvah. The burial will take place after her body is examined at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, the only facility in Israel authorized to conduct autopsies in cases of unnatural death.

Police reported a shooting incident at the Lion's Gate in the Old City between an armed terrorist and police officers who were on the scene.

The suspect, reportedly a 17-year-old Palestinian from Qabatiya in the northern West Bank, was armed with a Carlo-type submachine gun according to police, and shot at a police post before being neutralized by Border Police officers.

The Old City's gates were closed as the police searched the area for another possible suspect who they believe may have assisted the perpetrator.

Shortly after, a second suspect was arrested by police in the surrounding area. He is believed to have assisted the shooter and was meant to help him escape.

One police officer was injured during the incident and was evacuated to the hospital. A bystander who was jogging was lightly injured during the incident and was treated by paramedics on the scene.

United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Yechiel Stern who was one of the first responders at the scene relayed: "I treated one person who was lightly injured due and suffered contusions. The attacker was subdued by security forces."
